Writers' Strike Update
As you may be aware, the Writers Guild of America launched their strike last Monday, November 5. Thus far, no agreement has been reached in the infamous writers’ strike. The late-night shows have been among the first shows impacted by this strike, with more production shut-downs of regular prime time series intact. According to IGN.com, the picket line was estimated to be about 4,000 strong as of last Friday.
What does this mean for the future of DAYS? Fans need not worry for the time being, since the show has enough new material written to get through to the end of January 2008. If no agreement is reached by that time, according to soap columist Lynda Hirsch, others will be most likely writing for the soaps, such was the case back in 1988 when a similar strike took place for more than 22 weeks. However, according to variety.com, one DAYS writer may decide to join the others on the picket line, although the article doesn’t disclose the specific name of the writer.
NBC has made it no secret that it may decide to cancel DAYS in 2009 when the show’s contract expires with the network. Unfortunately, the show continues to decline in ratings with no redemption in sight. As an example, many fans are still sad and outraged that the show made a bold move by killing off one of the most popular and beloved characters in the history of DAYS. Of course I’m talking about none other than John Black, played by Drake Hogestyn for more than 21 years. This shocking decision has caused many fans to wonder if the show is purposely trying to commit suicide.
In the meantime, I’m here to support our favorite show and keep watching nonetheless, despite the bleak ratings. If we show our support and stay tuned, there’s always hope that our show will go on past 2009, whether it’s with NBC or another network altogether. Please share your thoughts and theories with me. What do you think should happen on DAYS that will keep you watching and bring back viewers from the past? What does this show need in order to get back the ratings it garnered two decades ago and thus survive past 2009?

I have watch dool for 41 yrs, they need to get Drake back asap. I love days I’m a faithful watcher.
I do not know what I would do without DAYS. I have been watching the show for what seems like forever. It has been about 28 years!!! I’ll be so lost without my DAYS!!!
I am really enjoying the show right now actually. But to make it even better, they should bring back Drake. And they should also bring back Jack and Jennifer, and if Melissa Reeves doesn’t want to come back, recast her again, which I wouldn’t care for I guess, but they could figure something out!
I would also love to see the character of Peter Blake come back, he could be released from prison, and rejoin the Dimera’s and see who he could hook up with in Salem.
A big coo would be to get Eileen Davidson back!!! Now that would get ratings back up! Days needs to focus more on the love, drama and excitement again, although I said I am enjoying it a lot right now, these are a few things they could do to make it even better!!!
i love days right now but they could make it better by having A SHAWN AND BELLE WEDDING. AND PHILLP AND COLHE GET TOGETHER. AND A TEEN WEDDIONG MAX AND STEPHANIE . AND BRING BACK ABBY OR RECAST HER. AND LET JAN COMEBACK AND MORE TENN CHARATARS.
I am a huge Days fan. I’ve been watching it for 21 years and I can’t imagine them not being on the air. There have been some plots that make me stop watching for a while;such as, Marlena as the devil! They really need to bring John Black back to life! It not like they can’t I mean after all this is what Days is famous for! They could us more excitement. They went and brought back Steve and Kayla. The storyline needs a boost.
I have (along with who knows how many others)quit watching Days, when John comes back, so will I. No John no watch.
All of the people who claim to be big DAYS fans yet quit watching because John is dead, well that is ridiculous! Big storys such as this is what makes it interresting. Don’t get me wrong, I love John, but we have to remember that change happens. I will be devastated if DOOL leaves the air, it has een my favorite show my entire life. I remember sitting on my mothers lap 2 yrs old and watching. DO whatever you need to do with the story lines, make it compelling, exciting, and life like so it can stay! It would be a big mistake to take this shoe off the air. Oh and by the way, ratings are so subjective, I have never been asked what I watch……….have you? Besides that, some show will always be at the bottom of the ratings, not everyone can be at the top so get over it.
I’ve been watching Days for 20+yrs and love the show–even through the nonsense.
But, I’ve had a hard time connecting with the younger characters on the show (and I’m only 30ish). I’ve also had a hard time getting attached to new(er) Belle & Shawn (some actor switches are easier than others)–though I’ve traditionally liked their characters.
I prefer stories that involve the show’s long standing characters. I know they probably need to keep the show young, so how about some stories that are really more cross-generational? And I, too, would love to see a few old favorites worked back in (like Kayla & Patch)!
PS I’ve really enjoyed the story of Colleen & DiMera (which gave backstory to the feud)….
I used to watch Days, then fell away due to my work schedule. Now I have DVR and look forward to my evening with Days. I agree that just because John is gone, so what. I got sick of the sappy love stuff between him and the Queen of Tears. I loved Sami when she was Princess Brat. I still think she’s great, but would like to see her with EJ. I don’t know if EJ leaves the show yet, but I really hope not. I like their story line. I’d hate to see Days leave the air. I hope to have my daughter grow up watching it, like I did in my mom’s beauty shop. It’s a tradition. Bring back some of the old players like John’s loony aunt and where’s Philip’s dad these days. Roman is a great actor, give him a better story to run with. Maybe if the writers listen to us more, we could all pull together and save the show.
I’m not surprised that Days’ ratings continue to plummet, given the damage that’s been done to the show. I stopped watching a couple of years ago after most of the popular characters were “killed” off, but I still keep track of the spoilers for the heck of it.
From what I’ve read, I know w/o a doubt that it would be a waste of time to continue watching. The teens have practically taken over the show, and there’s no way I’m going to devote myself to a teenybopper series. Days needs to use storylines similar to what was popular in the past. Whatever happened to location shoots overseas? Whatever happened to the fancy weddings that fans were treated to from time to time? The list goes on….
I read that the DiMera/Brady feud ended in a whimper. If that’s true, then it’s too bad because they wasted a tremendous opportunity to get into the show’s history and explore the background between both families. What a waste……
Days can’t expect to reclaim the glory it once had w/o doing some major revisions as far as the writing goes, and for crying out loud - listen to the fans! They can’t possibly expect the show to remain on top if they ignore or downright go against what the viewers want. That’s bad for business.

Stop showing all those young kids. I’m not old and their boring. Bring back the old storyline and I think things will improve. And for goodness sake stop the three way love affairs boring. wheres Marlana? Why I earth would you fire John and keep some silling teens. Think back when the storyline was about John and Marlana,Bo and Hope Belle and Shawn that’s what will work.
I have been watching Days since my son was born back in 93. It would be a real shame to cancel Days. It has been on the air for decades. I do agree on some of the comments that there are too many young folks. John being killed was a disappointment and do hope he comes back. It can happen Days is known for burying people alive or coming back from the dead. I like Sami and Lucas together and how she used to be. I like the feud between Kate and Sami. I miss seeing Jack & Jennifer, Austin & Carrie and John & Marlena. What ever happened to having scenes outside in Salem park or strip. I have faith in the writers and the show. Things will pick up again you’ll see.
Days is no longer boring now that Hogan has taken over as head writer. It had reached a point that you could miss several episodes and still be up to date. Now it’s exciting. I love Sami with EJ. They have a chemistry that can’t be missed! Stephanie should be with Max, Phillip needs to move on and leave Belle alone. And I’d like to see the ties strenghten between Victor and Caroline as well as between Victor and Bo. Last, but not least, Days needs to strenghten the black families on there to bring in the black audience. Bring back Jett and Lexie for goodness sake. Their talents were definitely wasted. Pair Jett with Chelsea instead of Nick.
Here is wht they need to do. The writers need to go back in the 70’s and 80’s when the show was at it’s peek and see what made it so good. NO don’t repeat story lines. They have done that and it did not work. They need to see what worked and add more stories like that. The main thing they do is drag the stories out. John is not dead we all know that. Colleen is alive somewhere and we all know that. There is a love child out there and we all know that. Quit dragging it out. I don’t like the way Shawn and Belle are turning out. Both characters have changed since they got new actors and killin off Zach was a mistake. Days is to predictable.
The story lines have been far too unrealistic to really get involved in the show. As it is now, I can take it or leave it. The writing needs to include more emotional involvement and true to life events and feelings. Plus all of the character / actor trading is ruining any ties I do have with characters. If you are going to have teen drama, please make it realistic.
I was a addicted devoted crazed fan for 35 years. I stopped watching all togehter a few months ago. At first I missed it terribly. I still have the show recording on my dvr, but I just delete them. The teen storylines are just too much to stomach. I am only 43 I started watching with my mother. It is a shame really that to catch a new audience they thru under the bus their devoted older fans. Sigh… I miss days but I was fast forwarding more than watching. I didnt even see John leave, and I am glad. This reminds me of the expression “bite your nose to spite your face”
I would watch again in a heartbeat if they pulled a dallas and it was a 2 year dream sequence.
Been a VERY long viewer of DOOL. I remember Carly and I miss some of the other Brady family. I tape Days every day so I can watch at night. The actor playing Phillip has finally grown up. When he was with Chloe, he was awful. Hope the show stays on as I consider the Bradys and the rest part of my own family. Sorry Marlena lost her man–Drake was (and still is) awesome. Ever since the show lost its moral and family values the show has dove to the bottom of the chain. I have been watching since the day of inception. The only two shows I lik, one has been canceled and now you are talking about Days. When this happens I will not watch soaps again. The shows on CBS really suck.
Bring Grandma Alice back at least once a year. She has a life time contract. We who have watched Days since day 1 love her dearly. ( And I havent heard that she died ) This would help all avid Days fans espically the older generation of faithful watchers. A few more oldies would make alot of sence too. If only on special holidays. And make the story lines shorter. Seems like all the soaps from this station are leaving. If they want to make this the talk show station then put Days on spome where else. Just dont get rid of it. That would be a mortal CRIME !!!!!!
I’ve been a Days fan since the 70’s. Recently the plots have gone into the realm of idiotcy. I’m for the writers in this strike…but maybe new blood is needed to revive my favorite soap
I started watching in 1986 and was faithful beyond words until a few years ago. I got hooked on Broe and still have a desire to see them together again. I love Patch and Kayla, and Bo and Hope. I loved John and Izzy B, Jack and Jennifer, and Shane and Kimberly.
I think Days needs to get back to the stories that hit home to so many people, real family type stuff. I could care less about the parties at the sorority house. I am very disappointed that Chloe is coming back without Brady. I think that Broe was a super couple in the making and I can’t believe that Days is destroying their happily ever after.
I have started watching it again recently, but am far from being hooked. They need to get some of the wonderful fan fic writers on the boards to write the story lines and then we would have a show worth watching!!
GET EILEEN DAVIDSON BACK AT ALL COST! Ej is a brilliant actor/character. One thing that kills me: John “died” - why isn’t Belle rolling in money? Really really bad writing there. She could still work as a nurse but GET SOME NEW SETS! No one has a house! Marlena could buy Sami & Lucas a home! I HATE that crappy apartment they live in. And EJ lives down the hall? He’s a DiMera! Oh - lose the sorority storyline it sucks!
As a loyal fan (watching since the 3rd episode aired)I, too, am unhappy with them killing off John Black. But in “Days” ritual - he’ll probably be back.
And this is the problem, sort of. It seems that the writers used the “come back from the dead” recipe once and it was a big hit. Now after 10 years of the same recipe - I think we are all geting pretty tired of that. Let the writers come up with something creative and different - and if they cannot do it - - ask for the fans to suggest a story line they would like to see - and let the writers have a go at that for a change. You’ll be sure to get a ton of ideas that way lol. And probably some good ones that will bring Days back into first place again.
I have watched days for over 30 years and my daughter also watches. I can’t imagine why Days is so low in the ratings. We wouldn’t think of missing a day. Our DVR is set so we never miss an episode. We still LOVE Days.
I WOULD BE LOST WITHOUT DAYS. I HAVE WATCHED IT FOR AS LONG AS I CAN REMEMBER, TAPING IT WHEN I WAS IN SCHOOL, PLANNED COLLEGE CLASSES AROUND IT AND EVEN REFUSED TO LEAVE HOME UNTIL AFTER DAYS WHEN I WAS IN LABOR WITH MY SECOND CHILD, WE MADE IT TO THE HOSPITAL WITH LESS THAN AN HOUR TO SPARE.

I was outraged to hear that Days might be canceled. It is my favorite show ever, so I decided to take action and start a petition a few months ago that I am sending to the the Executive Producer and the head of NBC, Jeff Zucker. I would appreciate if you would take a moment to sign it and possibly tell your friends and other fans to sign it as well. I truly believe we can save days.

I’ve watched Days since the beginning. I love it when the bring back people from the past.
The teen story lines are not bringing in any new viewers so back to the way it used to be. So many family storylines have gone by the wayside.
We all love seeing Grandma Horton, Tony being back is great, of course Bo and Hope, Doug and Julie, please get Mickey back for Maggie, and stop the stupid story lines that made so many people stop watching. Marlena being possessed really turned a lot of people off. Get back to reality—even if it is a soap.
We lost the Doctors and Another World–don’t let them take Days away from us.
I have been watching DOOL since the Summer of ‘73. In my opinion one of the biggest mistakes they have made is killing off John Black. Drake Hogestyn didn’t deserve that kind of treatment after 21 years of faithful & loyal sevice. I believe NBC doesn’t support the concept of soap operas anymore. The other networks have 4 each! I think they need to go back to the core families of the Horton’s & the Brady’s. People are tired of the teen story lines.They used to only do those in the Summer. They need to bring back more of the older people. They need more comedy like Aunt Vivian.Bring back Drake Hogestyn as John Black for sure!The writing has really gone down hill recently I think. Show promos of Days during prime time TV.I agree the writers need to go back to get an idea of why DOOL was SO popular in the 70’s & 80’s & work to restore the popularity again. Do NOT cancel the show at all!!

I hope days goes off the air. They are where they should be in the ratings.I watched beginning with the first episode. It was all about super couples and family. Now Sami has become the star. Hello? Where did that come from? SHE’S WITH HER RAPIST? The twins have different fathers? She leaves Lucas and Will for EJ? THE COLLEGE STORYLINE? WHO NEEDS IT. IF DAYS IS FOR THE TEENS AND YOUNG PEOPLE NOW, OKAY BUT THEY WILL LOSE THE OLDER FANS LIKE ME.
I love Days. But keeping the same old stuff going on day after day gets boring. And killing off John Black was a definet shocker. Maybe bringing back some of the old characters would bring back more interest. I miss the old Days. I just hope Days doesn’t get canceled in 09. I really do like Days but the story line needs alot more improvement from whats going on now. But any how I’ll still watch Days till the very end. Oh by the way can we at least have an episode with Alice Horton? I’d like to see something done with her being she is the oldest cast member of Days!!!!!!!!!!
I do not like the story line of the rapist Ford. I turn off the sound when that comes on. they should not of killed John. They should bring back

I’ve been watching Days for 31 yrs. Admittedly, less than I used to. I like follwing the storylines of Marlena & John, & Steve & Kayla & Doug & Julie (ha all the “older” ones. I don’t like all the teen storylines. Yes they do need to bring John Black back. I met Drake about a yr & 1/2 ago at one of his fan clubs functions & what a nice, down-to-earth person! The others I would like to see come back, as a couple & not divorced if I recall, are Kimberly & Shane Donovan !
I have been watching days from the very first episode. I don’t know what I would do without it everyday. I miss it when it is the weekends. I need my DOOL fix everyday.
What would make it better? Get back to the roots of the show. What made it a ratings blockbuster years ago? Do the same things, more family values. Since Grandpa Horton died, we need a new “core” family. Get back to the old days and try again what made it a hit years ago.
And bring back Kimberely, Shane, Jack, Jennifer, Abby. There are the roots, now plant them and let them grow.
I’ve been a “Days” fan since 1967 and will until I die or it comes to an end. I miss Granny Horton something terrible for she is one of the ladies that I have listened to during the years. I think that all our soap stars from the past should be brought back such as Granny Horton,Jack & Jennifer, Patty Pease & Shawn, Frankie to be matched up with his real wife Billie, Max & Stephanie, John Black from the dead cause we didn’t see any body? The rape part I think is a good storyline which should include someone contracting AIDS to help wake up some of the younger ones that still think that they are invincible. A child molester story would be a good one to make everyone realize that this happens every second of the day. Showing a child that is being mistreated is something that is terrible to see and think about but we all need to be aware of. Children being abused and hurt sexually being put through pain or killed happens but nothing seems to ever happen to the perpertrator. Let that be a story that can be understood by the young and old. However I do believe that they could put Doug & Julie into a new Doug’s Place in which some of his prison inmates want to come back to raise hell with him for some reason or another. Let him sing the beautiful songs like he use to do. Maybe they could come up with the Mafia getting in on the picture going against the DiMeras and Victor Kiriakis’s organization. Bring on the war but let Bo, Steve, Abe, Roman, and the Salem Police get in on the action and not sit on the sideline. I wish that Wayne Northrop had been brought back as the orginal Roman. And maybe out of the blue have the now Roman come back as Chris Kosachek as he played before in some miraculous way. I think the DiMeras can keep raisng the roof in Salem. Lots of wheeling and dealing in different lines of work for them. Nick the pimp and Eve were more good actors and actresses. Eugene & Caliope helped the show bringing laughter and happiness. Now the part with Miss Belle makes her look like trash. Put Philip’s butt with Chloe or someone else. Let him get real with the kid kick and take responsibility for his own little boy. Enough of the wounded soldier act cause it’s mocking our soldiers that are going through the real thing in life. It’s been so great seeing the past cast coming home again. Good to see Tony & Anna back along with Steve & Kayla. The Sky Blue event should have shown the human trafficking episodes in full swing instead of the way it was approached. Human trafficking is real and it happens all the time. I think that Kate should be pregnant since her and Roman had a quickie so that she’d get real and leave Lucas alone with the Mother Hen bit. Enough even. Park her on the island with Stefano and possibly let him be the daddy if she was to be pregnant? Shame that Bengy was killed off supposedly. Even Stefano’s hinchman should have been left so he could return at a later time. Keep old Dr. Rolf and let him go on a rampage for Stefano. Hogan is doing a great job so let’s hope he gets it kicking into many different directions so as to keep us wondering what will happen next. Don’t drag out the episodes so long. Make them short and sweet and keep the dirt slinging in all directions. I love my “Days” and hope they never leave us behind. Keep on keeping on. Peace out.

I have been watching the show since the beginningof time, I was still in school. I don’t miss a day, I have my recorder set to get every minute of it just in case I should miss a show. PLus, I always have the soap network. PLEASE DON’T TAKE THE SHOW OFF THE AIR. If need be change networks but you have a faithful family that would sadly miss the Horton and Brady clan. Plus everyone in between. I love when Doug and Julie and all the other past members come back it’s great to see them. I have named my children after characters on the show. And I have 5 of them. That’s how devoted I am. SAVE THE SHOW.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have been a faithful fan of days since it began. Toooooo many “kids” involved. Such unbelievable stories. I agree with one viewer, go back to the 80’s and review the storyline. Bring back John and I am sure your ratings will improve. How about Kim and Shane. Your catering to the 20 ish crowd and your main stream is between 35 and on up. Get rid of the silly storylines. The college story is crap and the Max/Jed/Stephanie & Chelsea story line was a waste of time. Bearing in mind these are my thoughts. Have a little more Doug and Julie, such a breath of fresh air as is Maggie. Good work getting Kayla and Patch back. Anna and Tony are such fun even the idiotic rivalry between Kate and Sami is sometimes humoring. All of these comments seem to be saying pretty much the same thing bring back John and a lot of the Salem people we have grown to “love to watch”. If you build it they will come. . . if you make suggested changes from the “Fans” your ratings will go up,up,up. We love you days, give us a reason to keep this love affair going.
I think we need all new writers, the ones they have now stink…..

The old group were the best. Mrs. H and her infinate wisdom. Jack & Jen, Marlene & Drake Hogestyn. Letting Drake go was the poorest judgement of all the days of your lives. No amount of money would have been too much to keep Drake.
Jack and Jen. We must also have the Dimera family and the Kiriakis family. The core group from the 70’s and 80’s made a wonderful show. Add Patch and Kayla, Dug and Julie, Marie etc.to the group.
The teeny boppers must go…..They could be incidental to the show but not the main thrust. And last but not least get Sami and Lucas back together.
Currently, there are no happy endings.
I was told that during the depression, people who were out of work saved the 5¢ necessary to go to a movie to escape from the depression of the day. Today we turn on Days and get nothing but depression! NO wise words are spoken, no advice is given so young people know right from wrong. There is NO VALUE to this program. Go back to the 70’s and review the romance and love and families. Sure there were conflicts but good always won over evil. And it didn’t take six months. Get the stories to relect positive family values without proselytizing–remember we are Muslims, Jews and Christians.
One last note. Lexie and Abe had a wonderful relationship. A good middle class Black family. Wouldn’t it be nice to see more Blacks “making it”. Give people hope not despair.
It would be nice if Corday read some of the comments. Perhaps he could follow in his parents footsteps and revise the show. Then he wouldn’t have to worry about ratings. They’d be way up near the top.
I have been a fan of Days since the show started. There has many people to leave. Days started around Horton family.Where are all of them at?
What was Days reason for letting Drake go? This was the biggest mistake that they did.With as many people who has came back to life I know they could bring John back if they want to. For the sake of the show they should do so. They are killing the show.
As a fan,yes I have stopped watching unless Drake is back as John.Marlena needs John and the were the super couple of Days.

I have been a loyal fan of Days for well over 30 years. The story lines have deteriorated slowly. I for one have lost interest in it and even more so since Drake was killed off. The whole EJ/Sami twins storyline has become not only boring but ridiculous. I find that I can miss several days of watching and still catch up (I record it and watch when I can). I would hate to see the show end, but the storylines need to be revitalized…good luck with that and I hope it can all be worked out.
I have been watching Days for 28 years, and have loved just about every storyline they had. My all-time favorite
past scenes are with Steve and Kayla, when Kayla was married to Jack and Kayla
would sneak out to see Steve. Kayla had a very high temp. Then “Patch,” or Steve
ended up taking great care of her and she recovered, only bringingi them together, down the road towards marriage, children and happiness. I remember seeing Stephanie being born. Does anyone remember Steve being so happy? That was my favorite era of Days.
Although, I like it now too. I certainly hope it doesn’t get cancelled in 2009 or EVER! It’s clearly the best soap out there. there was never a better
soap than Days, nor will there ever be one!
I’ve watched days for about 40 some years and I am so upset with alot of the things happening on the show. Alot of you fans have said what I think too I just want to add that if the yoong lady who won soap star would come on and wow all the younger men maybe all the younger actress would grow up and I wouldn’t hate them so much cause right now all the younger chicks need a charater make over like yesterday. I have watched days for over 40 years and likje the show very much but they have played ever story line, and way overdone some stories lines. Such as daddy whois the daddy and the triangle. Everything comes to an end. Maybe it is time for days of ourlives to ride off into the sunset.
If you want to bring up ratings, bring back John. Make it like it was only a dream and he is not dead. Like the Bobby Ewing plot on Dallas. We miss John. And make Phillip get a life and leave Belle and Shawn alone.
I still love Days and don’t want it to go off the air. Bringing back Chloe is good, but bringing back her family would be even better. That Nancy was quite a kick! I agree with so many of the things I have just read - too many teens and their stories - boring. We older die-hards want to see Doug and Julie, Maggie and Mickie and as many Dimieras as possible. We need some real drama again. I love EJ and Sami. Wow, they just sizzle on screen. I never saw it between Sami and Lucas. I hope they keep Sami & EJ as a couple, they are so well matched in their behaviors. Shawn and Belle are boring, I like Chelsea (the only one of the younger set I do like, well, maybe Nick). Like nearly all the others, I miss John and Marlena doesn’t have a story without him - the great love of the show. I love Bo and Hope and how their love never stops. Most of all, I miss Jack and Jennifer. They would be hard to recast if the old ones can’t come back though. DON’T GO OFF THE AIR! MAKE IT HAPPEN LIKE IT USED TO BE.
I have watched Days for 40 years. I can’t even tell you the extents I have gone to in order to prove my loyalty. I lost all interest when Chelsea arrived. Nothing against the actress, but I had so much hatred for Chelsea that it made me miserable. I had to stop.
I say get rid of Lucas! He is this whiny little brat who does nothing but repeat his same useless threats and act like a ten year old.
I think the show is doing great, except for that silly college rape story, very stilted and stupid, rehash material. It feels like 1991 with that story. It has no idea what colleges are like nowadays and how accusations like this are treated. Did they miss the whole duke rape case?
As for John Black, good riddens! He was a stilted actor at best. And the voice for him by the writers was a joke. I think it moved the story and other characters along with his demise. Of course, it is always better when they don’t actually kill them off, better to have him being shown at the end as a prisoner of Susan, EJ’s Mom, who maybe kidnapped him to try to reunite them as a family - did she not think he was the Dad at one point?
But I like all the other stories right now and find EJ’s acting to be very strong, especially in acting with Sami.

Another DOOL vet here for over 26 years now. I have to agree with many others here, that the show has gotten really bad and that’s why the ratings reflect it.
The biggest mistake Hogan Sheffer did was to bring back all of our beloved characters from the past but give them no other storyline except to sit around the pub and read sappy love letters from Santo and Colleen.
Where’s the adventure from the ’80s that made this the can’t miss soap?
Drake Hogestyn and Deidre Hall kept a mid ’50s aged couple sexy and passionate. Peter Reckell and Kristian Alfonso still ignite the screen. And, given a better storyline, Martha Madison and Brandon Beemer could become the future supercouple if “Days” gets the chance to stay on NBC past 2009.
Like so many of you have stated, let’s see Mickey and Maggie, Doug and Julie, Caroline and Victor/Shawn Sr., Alice, Abe and Lexie, Tony and Anna, Adrienne and Justin (where is he BTW?), Roman and Kate, Stefano and Rolf, and Billie with someone…..why not EJ?
I love Sami and Lucas. They are a great couple together and the 2 actors have such great chemistry and history together. That’s what makes it work. Steve and Kayla are great, but they don’t have a decent storyline together. Pocket didn’t do it for me. Nick and the 2 little boys is ridiculous. Put him and Chelsea back together and Max and Stephanie as well. That’s all the teens you need unless you want to bring Abby back in. Let’s get this show back where it belongs and make sure it stays on the air for many generations to come.

The writers must think they’re working for Jerry Bruckheimer - the director that does all those over-the-top action movies trying to keep this fast paced. It’s so fast-paced and stupid now - you can’t get attached.
Brandon Beemer is awful as Shawn - though I have to lay blame on the writers taking a decent guy and making him into a hyper-impulsive, over-anxious, “I look sincere when I squint a little” dope. Shawn’s character was decent, smart, and kind before they tangled him up with Willow. I liked Mimi - she seemed like the most sane person on the show for a while there. I know that before the storylines went on so long before with building tension that it was too much - but this - “go to Vegas/jump out a plane/land near a cave/Mom and Bo find you within 25 minutes of landing or have twins/drop them off at the hospital - don’t even bother with a name/fly to Santo Domingo/get divorced/marry/see EJ get shot/climb into bed with him because “Stefano says no one is safe” is pure rot.
I actually thought the writers had a shot at getting Sami out of the Austin/Lucas/Austin/Lucas rut with a new healthy choice until they turned EJ into another Dimera maniac - who will brainwash and torture steve/blow up a race car/put poison gas into Kayla and Steve/sleep with Kate/shoot John/rape Sami with a gun/kill Lucas/and threaten to kill your family and ..and oh now - he’s still irrestible to Sami? no - they would have had a good chance to really develop Sami if he’d won her with the fact that he’s good looking, charming, and was a race car driver/businessman. If he’s going to be redeemed - he’s going to have to take a LONG walk on the beach, look at himself and cut ties with Daddy Dimera and leave Sami alone for a long while.
And here’s a switch - instead of Lucas being the victim - why not bring along someone decent and smart whose smitten - without being paid to do so - with him.
Kate Roberts is great - Roman is good. There’s got to be a guy out there that could be brought in to be a mature love interest for Kate. She’s way too good to waste - and she needs to have some major storylines that address her lovelife - without her meddling in her kids lives.
I was really turned off by the continual groping that Stephanie’s character and Jeremy subjected us to all summer.
Just give these people a touch of sophistication - and a little less of the keystone cops story writing - please!!
I have been watching Days since 1968. I think they should have some happy endings. Sami should have had babies by I have always love patch and kayle. Shane and Kimberly. As so bring back Micky for Maggie. Always loved Bo and Hope from day one I guess I live for the old “DAYS”,but I still watch.

Please return to the good old “Days” Use the awesome actors you already have. Bring John back. Abe and Lexie, Band the Brady clan back together against the Dimera’a to save Lucas and Sammy. You know Stefano rigged the paternity test for EJ. Have John and Marlena come back from working undercover to expose the Dimera’s and prove it was Stefano’s family that killed Shawn’s sister. We need to see a family that bands together again the way they use too. Bo and Hope, Steve and Kayla, Abe and Lexie, Shawn D. and Belle. Family matters folks and you have gotten away from what Day’s was all about.

I have been a fan of Days since the mid 1970s. That show has been part of my family for many years. I too will be devasted if the show does get cancelled. I actually think the show has been great since the Dimera’s have all come back. But with killing off John Black that was a huge mistake! John and Marlena were suppose to be the next Tom and Alice Horton (besides Bo and Hope). What the show really needs is to get back to family story lines. The show was all about the Hortons. Now where are they? Lately the show is more about the Bradys.
I heard a good rumor: John really is not dead. He is in Ireland looking for Colleen who really never died. Marlena will marry Stephano so no other person will get hurt.
Lets all hope the show never gets cancelled.
I think they should stop trying to add a younger cast. They don’t have the experience to keep a wonderful show like days on top of the ratings heap. They should concentrate on the veteran cast members of the show. They should end for good the Brady DiMera feud once and for all.
Stop making a rape victim be married to her RAPIST. Make EJ pay for his crimes and for God’s sake get that hack James Scott off the show. He can’t act to save his life and is killing the show each and every day that his character is on.
Get rid of all those vile DiMeras and focus on the Hortons and the Bradys. Bring back the Alamains too.
I have watched Days for over 30 years, and was happy to see many cast member brought back: Stefano, Anna,Tony, Kayla, Steve, Julie ,Doug, Maggie, etc. etc. Now, that you HAVE them casted again… you don’t utilize them at all. Steve and Kayla, –what story do they really have–NONE. Doug and Julie–NONE, -Maggie–NONE, older Shawn—NONE,Carolyn…NONE, Tony and Anna–NONE. And , Stefano…. NONE really either.He usesed to be dynamic. Now, even he is boring. There is terrible writing and this has been going on for a long time. There is nothing to excite the viewer. I am not a teen, but, could, COULD get excited with a young story line thrown in… but, , Chelsea, Stephanie, BORING. And, where are Abe and Lexie? And, even Billie, what story is she in? All you have are three main ones with Sammie, Lucas, and EJ and the college dorm, and boring Belle, with Philip or Shawn… Let your writers stike…let them all go forever and get some NEW writers with some creativity to give these actors something to do and say. Then your soap will pick up.
I have been watching DOOL since it began.I never miss an episode because I tape it while I am at work.I think the problem with the show is the Dimera family.This storyline has dragged on far too long and has insulted our intelligence.Stefano has died and come back way too many times.I also would have liked to seen what started the feud but I was disappointed to find out it was due to a romance that did not work out-how stupid do the writers think we are? I don’t know how to fix the ratings but I think more realistic story lines would help instead of a vendetta that started a long time ago over a failed love affair.
Listening to the comments here reminds me of the days when the fans tried to save Another World NBC made sure that it didn’t happen either I believe they have already made up their minds about our beloved Days One of the reasons Days is at the bottom (to some people) is because they have no support from NBC The other networks support and promote their soaps Do you see any super soap weekends the way ABC has for their soaps or the promos that CBs has for theirs I don’t think the problem is all Days but a lot of it is NBC
I began watching DAYS November 8, 1965; the first telecast! It was the first soap opera broadcast in color! I miss the core of the family; the strength and example Alice and Tom set in bringing the family together in times of trials and troubles. I’d like to see more story lines that include the older generation of the Horton/Brady families (Alice, Maggie& Mickey, Doug & Julie, Laura, Bill & Tommy Horton, et al.) and I’d like to see them gradually ‘pass the torch’ to the younger set. The story line needs to have some stability and strength in its characters! Example: Sami’s character has come a long way- but I’d like to see her become less of a whiner, more stable both as a woman and as a mother, with a solid reltionship. I am discouraged to see the writers destroy Belle’s character by playing musical beds! And where is Eric, Sami’s twin brother? Bring back Chloe, Austin, John Black, Mike and Carrie Horton but bring them back with some moral fiber and decency! I KNOW there are better story lines than what we have been fed… One would hope when the strike is over the present writer’s will have a heart-felt interest in their jobs to the extent they develop an interesting, but decent, story line that serves the entire cast as well as the dutiful fans such as myself. I’d like to continue watching this soap, I never miss an episode, (I tape sessions if I am not available to watch it at the time it airs), and I would be extremely disappointed if it were to end! Please come up with better story lines and bring back the family members that will make DOOL the number one soap opera once again!
I have been watching DOOL since I was 13 in 1966. Every show has high and low tides, but DAYS’ just seems to constantly shoot itself in the foot. Samantha is a great character, but no one character should carry a show and she does. SOAPS are supposed to have ensemble casts and too many of DAYS’ great actors linger on the back burner while we watch this ridiculous plot that Sami must marry EJ to stop the violence. Paleeeze! Why bring back characters if they are not going to be used? Where’s Anna and Tony? What a triangle the two of them and Roman would make. Where in heaven’s name is Lexi? She and Abe have great potential but they seem to have moved out of Salem altogether. Now they are bringing back Chloe. They don’t write for the characters they have on the canvas now, why bring in more for whom they will provide no story line? Does Kate do anything but meddle in Lucas’ life? Shawn and Belle are a big yawn and Philip is just plain obsessed. Give him the kid from the surrogate mother and shut him up already. Give Patch & Kayla something else to do besides baby sit. I had hoped for much better when Hogan became head writer, but it seems every writer gets stuck in the Sami groove. What the show needs is a writing team with vision that reaches beyond the characters of Sami and EJ. Until that happens, the show will continue to nestle in the bottom of the ratings and that is just so very, very sad.
They cant get rid of Days! I have been watching Days all of my life. Its the only thing I look foward to watching. If they get rid of days I will stop watching NBC alltogther.
Days is the only soap I ever watch; but, I wish they would quit ripping the top couples apart. Not kill John off; but bring him back. The writers might have decided to hide him so everyone thinks he is dead because of that stupid vendetta. They need some new blood plus the regulars.
I have been watching “days” for over 40 years, I think if they bring some excitement back like they used to have it would be a success again. The storylines when Bo,Hope, and Steve and Kayla were in a mystery were very exciting and what about Shane. The ISA stories really kept us going. Who needs all these stories about “who is the father”. Are we going to have this now with Belle? Is the child Philip’s or Shawn’s . We already know that is the next thing to happen.
We are more intelligent than these stupid story lines.
I have been watching Days faithfully since the early 1980s. I don’t know who they survey to find out what shows you watch when they are determining “ratings”, but they have never asked me what I watch! Here are a few thoughts:
- I missed John, even before he was killed, as he didn’t have a storyline to speak of anyway. I loved his interactions with Hope/Gina. They had great chemistry.
- I miss Vivian and her sidekick Ivan.
- Why was Nicole sent away again? (Other than the actress wanting to explore other options… recast!)
- If they insist on bringing back Chloe, they could at least bring back Nancy and Craig. She was a hoot, and it was nice to see a man interested in a woman who doesn’t wear a size 5.
- We recently got a glimpse of the chemistry of the Kate-Roman-Anna-Tony pairings and the different combinations flirting with each other. They could certainly develop something there, as all those characters are underused, except Kate boring us to death with Lucas.
- I hate that they killed Bart. He was such fun, and some of his better scenes were when he was interacting with Mimi, back when she was dating Rex. (I miss Mimi, too.)
- Shouldn’t Peter Blake be out of jail by now?
- I don’t mind the teens on the show, but I do feel they get too high a percentage of screen time, compared to all the other characters who have no storylines, like Abe and Lexie, Bo and Hope, Roman, Tony and Anna, etc.
Here’s hoping something happens to save our show!
I have been watching Days since high school in 1990. I don’t know what I will do if it ever goes off the air…its such a part of my life.
The storylines move so SLOWLY! It is awful. The writers seems to make every character so bipolar. One day, EJ is sweet and the next day, he is plotting to kill someone. Same with Sami, Lucas, Belle, Phillip, Hope, etc.
EJ is such a fantastic character…one of the best that Days has come up with. Do more with the vets we have. Tony, Stefano, Patch, Kayla, Victor, Phillip, Kate, Roman, Marlena! All of them are magnetic on screen. Why are we wasting time with this silly college scene?
I want smart drama and passion! Good looking guys wooing women! Tension and spark! Beautiful gowns and men in tuxes. I want one hour of escapism into a world of fantasy! I want romance in the afternoon!
Please do something!
The chemistry between Sami and EJ can’t be denied. Maybe you have something there. I don’t see that with Lucas and Sami. Stop with the 3 ways its boring. Don’t focus on the younger people. You said you were going to listen to the fans, but you haven’t. You constantley disappoint your fans, listen to them.
They need to listen to what the fans want and stop messing up all the couples. Get some good writers. Bring back the romance, the big fancy weddings for the Supercouples. Bring back the SuperCouples. And more, more more of Sami and Lucas–and yes even EJ. I’m sick of the teeny boppers. They are merely stereotypes that the audience can’t even begin to care about. Stop breaking promises to the fans. If you promise more John and Marlena-DELIVER! Don’t promise the moon and then kill off the characters we love. More romance–less violence. More vets–less teens. More of the couples everyone wants Lucas and Sami, Nick and Chelsea, Patch and Kayla…and please no more of Steve being crazy.

I’ve been watching DOOL for 26 years and I agree that it’s been doing downhill for a while however, it’s not the first time and they will recover! Bring back Shane! I thought he was way hot! I would like to see Belle and Philip back together and see EJ & Sammy together. I’m tired of Lucas always being soooo serious. haha
If they decide to cancel Days it will be so sad … I have watched Days forever and it is the best it has ever been. The acting is excellent. The new leading man James Scott is Brilliant. Days is so lucky to have landed him. He is perfect as EJ. Amazing Talent and he has kept me glued to the set. I appreciate great acting and Days has that going for it. Better than any other soap out there. I love that they have brought back the DiMera’s… I loved the story of Santo and Colleen. Their love scene was the best love scene I have ever seen on Daytime! Keep up the Good work Days and keep the faith!
Please bring back Drake Hogestyn to once again play the beloved John Black. He should’ve never been killed off in the first place since Drake didn’t want to leave the show. John’s death has only hurt a show already on life-support so this mistake needs to be reversed.
I’m one of those who is very sad and disappointed that Days killed off John. I think it was a callous and short-sighted decision. Days has a track record of making bad decisions, leading to the ever-declining ratings. The show’s PTB simply must start producing a show that is geared toward satisfying the fans, instead of continually choosing to alienate us. I’m not watching Days right now. I figure Days doesn’t want me, a devoted John/Marlena fan. I’ll consider watching again, however, if Days gives Drake Hogestyn and new contract and puts on the John/Marlena front burner story Ken Corday promised us. If those things don’t happen, well, yes, I think Days is committing suicide. It’s up to TPTB to save the show. There is still a chance to turn things around…if they get in gear and do the right things. Days has a great number of fans, but we need to see onscreen what is important to US.
It’s unfortunate that everyone but those who are getting paid gets what’s wrong with the show and what it takes to save it. First, bring back John Black, killing John Black was an insult to the viewers,total mistreatment of Drake and suicide for the show. Second, give John and Marlena the frontburner sl we were promised months ago-there’s no time in the history of the show that J/M had fb sl about them working together and finding their way back to each and the ratings tanked. Kill off or send EJ and put Sami on the bb or send her away with EJ. The ratings have consistently tanked since the show turned into the Sami/Ejami/Lumi Hour. Third,hire Sheri Anderson to try to give the show the life it so desperately needs. Sheri and Ed S. together could maybe save the show. Fourth,Corday needs to take an early retirement. Finally,listen to the viewers,watch the ratings and write stories that will bring back viewers rather than send them away.

I would like the show to be more balance. Not just Ejami/lucas on everyday. Not for either couple btw. And after 8 years let Philip be more than the third wheel of a triangle. Its getting old.
As far as I’m concerned, the only thing that will save Days and get me back to watching it is to bring John back and give John and Marlena the storyline that we have been promised but never got. They are the most beautiful supercouple and to fire one-half of this dynamic duo was the most stupid move on the part of those in charge.

Days is so dead. Why do the writers think people want to see Sami, EJ,Lucas, Steve and Kayla none of these people are lead actors and they are boring as hell. We need John Black back (as John Black)in a strong,surprising story with Marlena that’ll give me and other viewers who stopped watching a reason to start watching again.
I have been watching Days for about 15 years. I would be lost without it. I absolutely loved the “love scene” for Belle and Philip. PHELLE is the hottest couple currently on Days. I want more scenes with them. They melt the screen! They are definately the future powerhouse supercouple of Days of our lives!!!!
Days is getting the ratings it deserves because TPTB refuse to write a quality show featuring the characters fans want to see. It isn’t my job to keep supporting something that doesn’t interest me. It’s the JOB of the people who are paid to put out a product viewers want to see!
Fire Hogan Sheffer, hire Sheri Anderson and bring back John Black. I guarantee the ratings will go up.
I have watched Days since Marlena was possessed by the devil! I have taped when I couldn’t watch it ‘live’ and to think it might not make it passed their contract is so sad!!! The story line has improved a lot I think! And yes it was sad that they killed off Drake’s character, but maybe they felt they had to do something terribly drastic to catch others’ attention?! I will pray that the writer’s come to a decision and that Day’s continues to go on. I do not watch any other soap but Day’s and will never. It’s the best ever!!!! Best actors, best stories, best everything!!! We all need to band together and tell everyone to watch and send in their support!!!!!!!!! Thanks
I’ve been waching Days for years too. I hated it when they dropped Passions. Then I saw they was ging to drop my days too. I don’t know how to fix it but I sure hope you do. Demira is getting boring and I never thought I’d see Sammy leave Lucas to marry E.J. E.J is really in love with her. But Tony was right if it wasn’t for the vandetta his father had kept alive all these years E. J. wouldn’t be paralized now, Benji wouldn’t be dead, and tony wouldn’t be agaist his father. But hopefully E. J. will see his father for what he really is a bitter old man that cares only for himself. But does who does Sammy really love. who does Belle really love? Whats going to happen to marlena. Why did they kill off John? N>B>C> will lose my vote if they take off my last soap (Days)
Vandetta! I am sick of hearing that word!!!!!!! I have been watching days for 23 years. The frist time was by accident. My wife was going for a pregancy check up and while waiting for her to get ready I stumbled on Days. I was hooked. I have stopped watching several times due to ” SILLY ” story lines. By the way, there are several right now. Come on days, can’t you at least let one couple be happy on days! I have been married 37 wonderful years no all easy but the are happy ones. I am sick of MR PLINKY and his love for Sammi! Come on, he ain’t in love with anyone but himself like his DADDY! John leaving has made me want to leave DAYS for the last time. But do the writers care, must not! There isn’t space he enough for my complaints. My wife tells me, WHY ARE YOU WATCHING THIS???? DUH I am not sure… I guess I miss what drew me to Days…………..:( Rich
The show needs to end the Dimera family & storylines for good. The show needs to put the Hortans back as the core family.
They need to start telling social storylines, love & romance, and bring back the drawing room drama storylines & dialogue.
They need to start remembering their history and begin to tell stories the way Ken Corday’s parents did when show was originally produced by them.
They also need to make some cast changes. There are a few on the show who cannot act. They also need to bring back old forgotten characters and the actors who played them.
Last but not least, Ken Corday needs to step down and allow Hogan to create the smart,scripts that he is known for. I watched ATWT when Hogan wrote for that show. He deserved those emmys he won. I have no doubt that Hogan is not being allowed to write what he wants. If he was, the shows rating and fans would be higher than ever.
Days used to be as smart,witty, charming, and glorious. They still can, if they would just remember the show the Corday’s put on the air so long ago. Rule of thumb, if the storyline is not worthy of Tom & Alice, rip it up and start over.
I record Days EVERY day and watch EVERY episode. I have done so for about 15 years now. Granted, there have been times when the show has gotten ridiculous and boring but I remained faithful and continued to watch. I do like it now but I agree with a lot of the other comments — don’t center everything around the young people. Bring back story lines centered around the “old” characters. They are not too old to continue to develop storylines around. Many of the viewers like me are 40 - 60 something and we can relate to Bo and Hope, John and Marlene, Roman, Steve and Kayla, Lexie and Abe, etc. Even Caroline and Shawn could be written in a lot more than they are - they are interesting and colorful characters. Keep the strong family values as well as what I think has always been the true centerpoint of the show: Good vs. Evil. PLEASE DON’T TAKE “DAYS” OFF THE AIR - THEY ARE ALL LIKE A PART OF MY FAMILY!
I had watched Days for 30 years and still love it every day! I live with the changes and the story is still good. I would really miss it if they cancel!!!
I love DOOL and as much as the ratings are falling, I am still an ardent fan.I still hope the show does not get discontinued when the series contract expires in “09″.
Bring back some of the older people that we all enjoyed watching for years…I tuned in the other day for the first time in a while, and recognized very few people…..where are John and Marlana, Where are Jen and Jack? I was astonished at how uninterested I was in the show. I used to have to record the show or stay up late to watch it on the soap network and within the last couple of weeks where I have been able to tune in off and on…it was sooo uninteresting…..Please don’t let the show die…..come on guys lets get back on track!!!!!
I’ve been watching days since about 1986 when I had days off of school as a 14 year old. I can even remember mum watching Days when I was a toddler and she’d be standing there ironing away while it was on.
I switched off last year (in Australia). That entire Sammi, Lucus and EJ thing is just rediculous along with the way Sean and Belle are running not to mention the new Sean (just not the same).
I did see the episode that EJ most likely got Sammi pregnant if that is the case and several months later I have tuned in again and EJ is holding it over her. For goodness sake any woman in that situation would tell here other half she was rapped straight away, after all that is pretty much what it was but no Days has to drag it out HOW LONG ????? Don’t even get me started on all the garb with Bo and Hope.
I was never a huge John fan but I did like his part and think it stinks he is gone, the love between him and Doc is beautiful. Jack and Jen made the show with their quirkey ways and Lucus and Sammi as the next long term Bo and Hope type family with Wil and the new baby would be amazing. It doesn’t have to be all lovey gushy but seriously bring it back to earth a bit. Can’t no one, just one couple be happy in a soapie.
More focus on adult stuff instead of the teen stuff would be good too.
Get back to checking out those 70s and 80s episodes that made the show instead of the WAY too twisted storylines on the screen now.
Maybe the writers even need to takea peak at the work of their rival The Young and The Restless… I don’t want to see another Y&R but theirs is working with the fans… Why ??? Because it is believeable to a point, with the exception of Shiela (thank goodness she got killed off) and their storylines don’t string out for months on end with no ending in sight to the madness.
Until the triangle is over I just can’t watch anymore.
i love days of our lives the suspence the drama keeps me glued to my screen i have watchesd days since i was 8 now iam 22 iam still a big fan pliz pliz pliz oh i beg you do not cancel the show i hope to be a part of the cast in the future days of my life……
