Two Beloved DAYS Stars Let Go
Soap Opera Digest has reported that two of DAYS most beloved stars, Drake Hogestyn (John) AND Deidre Hall (Marlena) have both been let go as a result of the massive budget cuts going on at the show. As shocking as it sounds, it has been sadly confirmed as true.
Over the weekend, Drake's fan club president had sent an email to his fan club members announcing that Executive Producer Ken Corday called Drake at home and told him that his character was being taken off of the canvas because they had other stories they wanted to tell. That was the only explanation given to Drake.
I cannot express enough how saddened I am about this news, as I know many of you are too. I have no explanation or no answers as to why in the world the show would do this to two fan favorites such as Drake and Deidre. I had the pleasure of meeing Drake earlier this year and I cannot say enough nice things about this wonderful man. He is someone who truly adores and appreciates his fans and it shows. He is not one of those actors who sits behind a table and shakes hands with his fans. Rather, he embraces them as though they are his friends. I found this out firsthand.
If it's any consolation, Drake's character of John will not be killed off this time. Ken Corday quotes to Soap Opera Digest: "The couple will be happily reunited after a long period of angst and separation and will be off-screen after January for an unknown period of time." So it looks as though John and Marlena fans will get a happy ending, although under unfortunate circumstances.
All I can tell you is to keep writing your letters to The Powers That Be and call the hotlines I have listed on the Contact Information Page. Let them know how you feel about letting go of two of the most talented, devoted, and extraordinary actors that have ever graced our screens. Please feel free to share your thoughts with me on this, as I am as upset over this decision as you are.

I can’t believe that the show is taking off two of their veterans. I think this decision will most likely cost them in the long run.
Why is it that the other Networks can supports 3 soaps but NBC keeps canceling and cutting the budget?
And here I was crying over the whole Jay Kenneth Johnson fiasco. This is even WORSE! These characters and actors are two of the finest on daytime. I cannot stand the thought of them being off the canvas. So, so sad!
I am just not surprised. Major cuts were coming and I still say there were too many new ones that could have been let go instead of the vets.

I have been watching Days for 33 yrs (since age 5) I am shocked about all this talk about NBC cancelling the best daytime show of all time….But now I get the news that Drake and Deidra and Jay are all going to be gone? What the heck are they thinking?????? Seems like NBC has something against soaps….
I can’t believe given the choice of getting rid of Kate or Marlena, they keep Kate. I have watched Days since the very first episode. I guess I’m done now.

What the…..! I can’t believe they would do such a stupid thing as to let go of two of the best actors on the show. Then to hear Philip toois most likely leaving,WHY!!!! Are you trying to lose your fans and loyal viewers because of some dumb budget cuts? I can think of better things and ones to cut then these three people. I’ve watched this show for over 40 yrs,and I’m only 59, so what does that tell you about loyalty? Maybe it should be the head writer who takes a budget cut and save these wonderful actors and their caracters. I’m not sure now what I will do if this continues, I’ve never cared about anything more than this show to the degree that I can’t take it if I miss an episode because it was overtaked by some stupid interruption for one reason or another. I tape it everyday even if I watch it just so I don’t miss a thing if I have an interruption. You had better come up with a better reason than that, for letting them go, then budget cuts! Change it back, or you’ll lose us for sure, and I believe I speak for a number of us who love “Days Of Our Lives!”
the whole point of days was deidre and drake, supercouples, family ties and now just because of budget cuts they destroy 43 yrs worth of history and loyal fans, good job neva gona watch it again, happy ending my…!

I am disappointed over the new John leaving as I had really come to like him! He was hilarious and very sweet (when he wanted to be and in his own way) Marlena has been OK over the years, I don’t know I think she just played the victime one too many times for me and had some crazy storylines like where she was possessed! I think I am more upset over Jay leaving than Drake and Deidre, but so thankful Days fans will get to see them reunite before they leave for a while. At least it doesn’t look like it is for good, cuz they said for an unspecified amount of time they will be off canvas which means they’ll be back eventually. I do agree that there are many other characters that could be let go, like Melanie, Kate, Chloe, Nicole. I am a little more hopeful about Chloe’s character now that Brady is back, but still not sure…still have a lot of unanswered questions about some current things though that have not been explained like what did Stephano do to poor baby boy Joey Johnson??? AND who is Melanie’s Mom?? They never said if Max and Mel have the same Mom or what?! And either way..who is/was she/they?! Another worry is that we hardly see Steve and Kayla…does that mean they could be gone next?!?! Hope not, but wouldnt surprise me!! I LOVE my DAYS and have for 30 years!!! Please, don’t let anyone else go unless it’s some of the newbies, and get back to the love, family, and adventurous fun stories we were entertained with for so many years!

I will no longer watch this show. I cannot believe that the writers are getting rid of the best actors (John and Marlena) and keeping all these newcomers that have no talent.
I have watched this show since it’s inception and I’m only 52. I missed the teen years of the Belle/Brady/Chloe/Phillip/Shawn saga but after reading some of the stuff over the past couple of years, I’m not sure I missed very much. I am in agreement that Kate is a character that serves no purpose other than to satisfy (or should I say “service” every man in Salem. Same with Chloe – you need a score card to keep up with either of them. They’ve tried getting rid of Deidre & Drake before and the show tanked! Guess they just can’t seem to get it in their heads that these two along with Bo/Hope/Steve/Kayla/Stefano/Tony/Anna/Roman are the heart & soul of DOL. What a darn shame the fans have to suffer (AGAIN) because they’re such tightwads. I hope Deidre & Drake enjoy their “vacation”. They’ll be back, of that I’m sure.
It makes no sense to me that so many new (?) characters have been brought onto the canvas but then remove the quality actors. You cannot say there was no storyline for John and Marlena because there
is a wealth of stories out there for them. I stopped watching Days
completely when they “killed off’ John before and only started watching again when he was brought back. I will watch until the day they leave together but that will be it for me. No more. Unless he (they) return.
I know I am not alone in feeling this way. Anger is a mild word for how I am feeling.

I just cannot believe this!! I guess I will no longer be watching Days. When my 2 favorite characters leave Days, I will to. How sad for NBC. This is going to cost them big time. Shame on you!
I have watched Days for 36 years and I have enjoyed Marlena, and John for so long. It will be like the death of a loved one. Can’t the big wigs do something about this?
This is horrible!!! This is one couple that should NEVER leave the show. They could save some money by getting rid of Melanie, EJ (I just don’t see Sammy looking at him the way she looked at Lucas), Chloe, Abe and Lexie, even Maggie and Mickey. I can see they want to change things up, but come on, they are all over the “canvas” it’s just ridiculous. In my opinion, they brought on too many characters (old and new) without thinking things out. Ken Corday sucks!!!!

was always on the tv when I was growing up.
I literally grew up with it. Deidre came on
the air when I was 10, and even though she
was off the canvas for that 5 years, she has
still always been Marlena. I have remained
loyal to this show my whole life, but I gotta
tell ya, this tore it for me. all of us fans
have suffered thru crappy storylines and lousy
writing and stupid casting because Corday
seems determined to completely destroy his
parents legacy. when John died last year I
quit watching because watching Marlena was
really painful and I didn’t see how she would
ever recover. and I was furious at the whole
situation. then they brought him back and
I began watching again and was waiting,
WAITING anxiously for that huge reunion and
payoff. now this. this is the end for the
show, I guarantee it. losing D & D is just
heartwrenching, especially the loss of Deidre.
she’s like a staple to that show. for me,
I’m done. I can’t do it anymore. Corday
cares not one whit for the fans and that head
writer, Dena Higley is the worst. so this
lifelong fan is walking away.
I agree. How can the other two major networks support so many other daytime dramas and NBC can’t seem to support just one. I am highly disappointed with the resent dismissals of three of my favorite caracters. Maybe this network needs a bailout too.
I have been watching days since I was in High school early 70’s. I love all the characters and have been frustated the last several years but continued watching. I hope everyone at days knows taking off John and Marlena is a huge mistake, one that will lose me a very faithful viewer, I guess the time has come to switch to ABC… DAYS will regret this
It is such a shame to watch with utter dismay, what is happening at Days. First, Jay Kenneth Johnson and now Deirdre and Drake. I was so happy when JKJ returned. He is the one and only Philip, so don’t bother recasting. John and Marlena should have already re-united. This whole NuJohn is, was and always will be stupid. They should be firing the idiots responsible for these ridiculous storylines and that includes ej raping sami, john back from the dead, stefano’s “coma” and yeah, Kate’s cancer.
Lung cancer is very hard to beat. Is Lauren next?

Deidre Hall is the anchor that keeps this ship grounded. Even though she is almost 60, she is still the most beautiful woman I have ever laid eyes on. Like another blogger said, I too have really enjoyed the new John. Before John’s memory loss I would have been happy to see his character go but Drake has done a phenomenal job with this new John and I laugh out loud at his quirkyness. I have watched DOOL since I was a college student and am now looking at retirement in 2 yrs. If all we have to look forward to are actors and actresses who can’t act (Chloe, et al), then I guess it is time for us baby boomers to look elsewhere for entertainment.
Would rather see that whiny Melanie go . I am not crazy over Marlena but i like john and Phillip.Need to let creepy Max and Chelsea go too.

Well, you don’t need to put a fork in this show to know that they’re done. If I were the other actors, I’d find something else to do and start packing. This show is not going to survive whether they’ve got a contract or not. Here’s an inconvenient truth: you don’t have a show if you don’t have viewers. I’ll be leaving as soon as Marlena and John do.

The biggest insult has been the rewriting of John’s history yet again. That and EJ raping Sammi and getting rewarding with not one but two children (Sammi’s pregnant). Days is the pits. It has the worse storylines.
I won’t miss John or Marlena. But I will miss JKJ (Phillip) If money is the problem maybe they should consider ridding Days of Stefano, Kate, Escum, Chloe, Max (who’s history has gotten rewritten), Chelslut and all the “new” characters. Days doesn’t need Brady but they need a new writer.
DOOL comes on at 10:00 pm where i live i stay up to watch it have to be up at 5:00 am for work i just do not understand what they are thinking taking them off it’s crazy

I too have been watching day’s since the onset. I am so disappointed with this news. I think this is a huge mistake getting rid of John and Marlena. I was so happy when they brought Steve and Kayla back. Just to mess up the soap all over again. It is really sad that everything is based on money, money money. Ken I think you are making a big big huge mistake. I know everyone has their opinion on who’s good and who’s not and 98% of the fans will agree that John and Marlena are two of them. Ken, I hate to say it but this stpid act just might lead to your demise. I don’t think you Mom and Dad are to happy with NBC or you!
I for one am very glad to see Deidre Hall finally leaving Days – for years I have had a hard time liking her character – always snobbishly right. As for Drake – i definitely will miss him – he is a very good actor and has always played his role to the fullest – especially when he was with Isabella – that I will always remember.

Why didn’t Melanie, Nick, or Dr. Dan get taken off. Those characters do not matter as much as John and Marlana. They are crazy. Days is getting to be bad at how they are directing the characters. This is the worst decision yet though. Bell and Shaun are not on there anymore, they killed Grandpa Shaun, they want let us enjoy John and Marlana together. This is crazy… they can get ride of Chloe for all I care she is not a good actress. Send Nick off to jail and then you have an open spot—- then send Melanie away and there you go!

I will never see days of our lives. to me they cancellled my soap. They are going to fire all the vets and bring new faces to the show. It will be call the new days of our lives.
Well, I’ve been watching since before I was born, my mom tells me & now, I’m done. As soon as D&D leave – that’s it for me. The show is killing itself. It’s unfortunate that they are ending things this way – they should really just go ahead & end it now.

I think it is horrible that 2 of the best stars of daytime are being let go. The only reason to watch Days is because of Drake and Deidra. I have watched the show for over 20 years and now I will no longer watch or DVR it. There are quite a few other members of the cast that should be let go because no one cares about their story line. Seriously, John and Marlena are one of the historic couples that make DOOL! Why not get rid of Melanie, Kate, Nick, Chelsea, Dr. Jonas, or any new people? Why?!?! Melanie is a waste of a character and so is Kate. She has cancer and apparently they are killing her off too. Stefano isn’t as evil as he used to be and he is wasting time too! Definitely need to get rid of Melanie and Kate, for sure. Bring back Phillip! I was looking forward to seeing what was going to develop between him and Stephanie. =)
OMG! This is totally crap! Hopefully soon Days will get some since about themselves. Take off two great actors, leave on horrible whining, pathetic actors…. Makes no since. Seems as if they are living a soap themselves. Making, stupid and wrong choices! I agree, let Chelsea go, AND THAT MELANIE! She makes me so sick listening to her. She is so fake. Horrible actress! Give her the boot soon!!! The writers need to come up with some better stories here. That will keep us long time watchers and attract some new viewers. The Cloie and Lucas storyline sucks! Marlina and John are the reason why I have watched this show for so many reasons. Why let them go, they are the ones that make that show. Get rid of Chelsy, Kate, Bo and Hope. Sammy is getting old, sick of seeing her. Chelsy is plain and has no chemistry with anyone. Marlina and John is what love is about. If they go, I will not be watching the show anymore either.
I guess soap operas are going in the same direction as corporate America. Eliminate the older, loyal employees and replace them with younger and cheaper employees.

I can’t believe it! Whats happening there? Can’t they cut someone else? Their taking off all the good actors and actress! Before you know it, I won’t know anybody.
Deirdre Hall and Drake Hogystyn are the top paid actors on the show. It’s that simple. And that sad.
Days got their renewal, but they are shooting themselves in the foot if they don’t see what all of us see. You don’t get rid of the stars of the show, if you want it to succeed. You get rid of of the excess baggage and they have plenty of it!!
Say good bye to Days, folks! This will be it’s last renewal, if it makes it to renewal time.
This is a HUGE mistake letting the best soap couple go, their characters make Days of our Lives, the writers will truley regret this decision, I hope they change their mind and let them stay and get rid of some of the newer cast members.

I am very sorry that Days can’t keep writers or actors who make this soap once my favorite. With the loss of John and Marlena, you have again reduced this program to one for teenagers and pregnant unwed mothers. Where are the families that your mother and father created. You may remember they were positive, caring people. Real people — your target audience seems to have changed since you, junior have taken over. Go back to the old ways and you won’t have to worry about sponsors or viewers. No one want to watch the junk you’re currently producing.

Having watched this show since its inception, I can’t believe how NBC is destroying this show. If need be, remove all of the minor, teeny-bopper characters that appeal only to your youngest viewers and leave the characters that matter, including John and Marlena, Beau and Hope, Kayla and Steve,Abe and Lexie,Sammie, Luke, EJ and Nicole.

In the way the real world is today …. we have to look for some stability. These two are the most stable people in the show. They were kind, caring, soft spoken, helpful, considerate, concerned ……everything we need in our world today. They gave hope. They were love.
I’m so sad about this – but a tiny bit hopeful since Dee and Drake are not being killed off but walking off into the sunset to maybe return another Day.
Keep John and Marlena. I love the chemistry that Drake and Deidre have. I’d love to see other characters leave–Melanie, Philip, Kate, Chloe.

I have been watching DOOL since the very beginning. Its very rarely, that you see the great actors like the characters of John and Marlena. They have always kept the show so interesting, and how much I looked forward to watching them every day.
I also loved watching the characters of Steve and Kayla, Bo and Hope. Which they seem to be taking a back seat also! Stefano and Tony were always great actors also.
Why don’t they use their heads, and keep the characters that are so loved, and get rid of those stupid kids??
I for one, will not watch DOOL anymore without my beloved characters on there. Ken Corday doesn’t seem to know what he is doing to a wonderful group of actors, as well as their fans.
Ken….your Mom Betty Corday, and your Dad Ted Corday, would not be too proud of you, for what you are doing to their masterpiece, and ours! I would think about this before you make any more dumb moves. Also think about getting rid of all of the great actors that are now on the show. And, you banish them like trash.

I have been a Days viewer for some 33 years and I have to say that the writing presently is terrible. I have repeatly commented here on giving the “more mature” actors some story lines, but, this just hasn’t been done.Instead Days brings in new young actors because these people do not require the high salaries that the long time veterans do. This is common sence when I see Mel, Nick, Chloe, etc and before this letting go.. never Marlena and John with anything much to say and absolutely no story. If you notice, Victor has been missing , of late. Also, Steven and Kayla haven’t been on much. Yesterday , ( Friday) was the first time I’ve seen them in a long while.And, where are Tony and Anna? So, I think it is inevitabe, that Days is on the spiral down. Why call it Days of Our Lives any more, when all the lives we watch are new ones?I miss Jack, Jennifer,Kim, Adrienne,and even the new Mickey ( Kevin Dobson). Why they even hired him, is beyond me. They certainly haven’t used him. I can see, too, being a long time viewer, like I mentioned…. they are trying, and I say “trying” to create the same chemistry and situation between Sammi and Rafe as Marlena had with Roman.. then played by Wayne Northrup many years ago. Hey, Days.. it’s just not going to happen again!!!!
I am glad that John and Marlena r getting back together again but donot take them off days. Let them have a long and happy life together in Salem. If 2 people had to leave town they could have been Stephano&Kate, E.J.&Nachol or Brady&Cholie but not John and Marlena. Wer all cutting back now but would a coffee lover give up morning coffee or a junk food eater give up junk food? I think not. Then why ask us viewers to give up John&Marlena? Bring back John&Marlena.

What else can they do with the two. Now, if you want to get rid of someone, get rid of Kate and Phillip. They are both just jerks. I say this is terrible news to let john and marlena go. I am a loyal fan also, let some of the other actors go instead of these veterans. Let melanie go with trent instead of marlena she is needed now to help Nick cope. the Max and stephanie storyline is going nowhere. If they go back to a couple okay and let philip go. John needs to stay and get help from his son (isn’t that why brady is back?) NBC you only have one soap can’t you keep this one going that us fans appreciate? Please keep the old reliable veterans.
I am as upset as the rest of this board, but let’s look at who really is at fault, not only for batched negotiations, but also for Days dying a slow death. I have watched since 1965. I was only 5, but I remember the glory days when focus was on family and real issues. Now I DVR it and fast-forward through most of it. Days has not been what it once was and that is due to the writing. The actors can only do so much with the material they are supplied. Days writers are horrible and we have been promised so much for so long. I can write a better storyline that is less predictable. And who is ultimately responsible for the writers? Ken Corday himself. If anyone is not doing his or her job it is he. He needs to go and we need to find someone who will stop the hemorrhaging and not just put a band-aid on it.
As for letting Drake and Diedre go, I am sure it is one more of his “let me get the fans all worked up and then spring it on them that they will be back”. Mr. Corday, this is not the way to get viewers. You have a loyal fan base and this angle does not work anymore. You sir, need to go. By the way, what is your salary??????

i think its a big mistake letting john and marlena go. i’ve watched the show since the early 70s and have gone through major changes but this has to be the worse. the whole show was about family values and love. now it’s all about murder and mayhem. where’s the family values? please reconsider your decision ken. this is the only soap i watch and would hate to see it end onthis note.

Well, I, for one, have already given up on DOOL since September and won’t look back anymore. It’s not the show it once was and never will be again. Instead of letting go of 2 of daytime’s finest, there could’ve been many other useless characters to terminate. Let’s face it, although I understand wanting to keep the demographics younger, give us some interesting characters. I am all for letting Nick, Melanie, Chelsea, Max and Stephanie go. Brink back Abbey and surround her with some decent characters. Steve and Kayla haven’t had a decent storyline since they’ve returned as well as Tony and Anna. I feel that if you don’t use them, then send them off royally. I, for one, like Kate and she is a vital part of Lucas, Phillip and Victor’s lives. Roman should go as well. I like Josh alot, but again, no storyline given ever. I say trim the cast but give the talented actors the right storylines and something of interest. A good romance never hurt anyone and DOOL doesn’t know how to do it anymore.

Well, it has been a great run but I guess it was time for the the powers that be to go ahead and commit the final act of professional suicide by firing two of the most beloved actors on the show. This proves that their decision making skills are subpar and that they will never be able to compete with CBS and ABC. I guess I will make the transition to ABC daytime programing from now on.

I’ve been watching Days since I was 3 so it’s been 30 years now. This is the most idiotic thing the show has done and frankly, I didn’t think the writers could top the idiocy (and sickness) of pairing Chelsea off with Daniel or in boring us all to death with Max and Stephanie. But they managed to surpass their level of idiocy by axing Drake and Deidre. These characters have, over the last 22 yrs, become the backbone of the show. Wow, Ken Corday has just sealed the fate of Days. Who’s gone next, Bo & Hope?

This couple is the backbone of Days! Without them there is not much of a reason to watch the show. I have watched the show from the beginning of time. I could understand if they wanted to retire and leave the show, but to have budget cuts and can your leading couple is absurd.

Please do not get rid of John and Marlena. I have been watching this show for 42 years. I was only 5 when I became addicted. I was stationed overseas and made my mother send me monthly tapes of the show. My granfather is 92 and he loves watching Days. His favorite characters are of course Marlena and John. What can we do? Maybe have a fund raiser to help pay for saleries. One fund raiser could be, have fans write their own storylines, and submit. Could be a show like next best soap writer. Maybe, this would give some great ideas and storylines for the show

I can’t believe either of them are being let go. Words just can’t say what I feel. I am a long time fan of Days, and mainly because of John and Marlena. They have made John this terrible person and I was anxious to see if the old John would “come back”, with the influence of Marlena behind him. The story line has been difficult to take. I don’t see why 2 of the best actors are being cut. They add so much to the show. PLEASE reconsider letting them stay.
Days came on the year I was born and my Mother always had Days on when I was growing up.I always followed Days in honor of her(she passed on in 2002)I am not surprised at all by this move. NBC gave the show it renewal this year with stipulation to make budget cuts and cast changes. Since Drake & Deidre are veterans getting top veteran salaries they were the first to go. Don’t be suprised if other veterans like Bo,Hope,Patch,Kayla,Stefano and Victor and other vets are going to be departing in 2009. Again save money by getting rid of the vets and hire younger less experience actors & actresses because they’ll be alot cheaper and they’ll want to get acting experience. Personally, I think NBC wants out of the soap business and it their way of slowing killing off the show.Such a sad shame. If Days goes off, I will feel that another part of my childhood is gone.I remember when Deidre first came on Days back in 1976, I was 11 years old.I remenber when the Bradys and the DiMeras first arrived back in 1981. If Days does go off, at least I’ll have my mother’s 2nd favorite soap to follow,General Hospital and to fill in the 1:00PM slot I’ll have to watch All My Children.

Please Mr. Corday as I have written to you in letters I’ve sent to Days of Our Lives c/o NBC-TV please keep the Doc and John but put John back like he was instead of the robotic one he is now playing.I know it’s a dog eat dog world today as the economy has taken its toll on many including my family and so many millions more. Hopefully the Good Lord will get everyone back on their feet. One thing I pray for is that the War will end so the troops can be joined with their families again and that everyone will have food on the table, a roof over their heads, and their health be good. I hate to see anyone lose their jobs but if there’s someway you can spread the plate around to keep the die hard veterans of Days please do so. There have been a couple brought in where their parts are sort of an overkill to the show. Joseph Mascolo is one that keeps everyone on their toes by raising cane and I am so glad that he is back cause his character is an important part plus he is another valuable top-notch actor. The part of Melanie is being overplayed by the young girl and it seems as if we’re getting another Chelsea but Chelsea panned out fine. Please just do the best you can but don’t let the original cast be let go. They’ve been there for the show through thick and thin so that needs to taken in consideration in which I’m sure you have done so. Maybe if the show wouldn’t drag by so slowly on some parts then the characters all could get a piece of the pie. Kind of a rotation deal I guess you could say. Anyway you know that all the fans that have been here with you as you have been here for us for the last forty plus years and we have loved the show ever since we set eyes on it. Your family tradition brought forth to us by your Mother and Father now lies in your hands and I hope it will carry on. Keep your faith that Days will go on forever and a day with all the dedicated actresses and actors that have been there for the show. I have watched “Day” since day 1. After all these years, I finally got my husband to watch. He is as upset as I am about losing John & Marlena. I know they are highest paid, but just take some of the lousy ones off and it will balance. I am shocked and saddened by the news that John and Marlena will be leaving “Days of Our Lives”. I have watched “Days” since it began and when they leave, I will not be watching again. Please, please bring them back!
I was up in New York City last Sat.(1/3/2009) and I went to Rockefeller Center to see the giant Christmas tree, so I went inside to the NBC Experience Store and I saw sweater,shirts and item for every NBC show except Days Of Our Lives. I went to a sales associate and inquired about Days items and she said sorry but we don’t carry items for Days. I thought to myself that NBC is really treated Days like dirt. Thats why I think NBC wants to eventually get rid of Days.That was a sure sign.
Deidre said on her video chat that there are no plans to bring back their characters. I take that she might mean in the immediate future. If the ratings really plummet and enough viewers complain, then they might bring back John & Marlena. But if Drake & Deidre don’t intend to come back at all, does anyone think they’ll end up on another soap?

I wouldn’t put the whole blame on Ken Corday. Alot has to go to the NBC head honchos.As I said in my earlier post the NBC Execs probably told him they’ll pick up another contract but he has to agree to a smaller budget,cut costs and make some drastic cast changes and Drake & Deidre were the victims of that, given the economy these days. With NBC doing that,hoping the ratings will plummet, that will be their excuse to just cancel Days. Back 30 – 40 some years ago, soaps did great because in those days,most woman were stay at home moms,cable tv and internet weren’t around. These days it so much different with all of the modern technology when it comes to watching tv.I hope I’m wrong,but lets hope that Days will make through 2009 and into 2010.
Personally I am through. Unless the powers to be change their minds and keep Marlena and John, I am out of here. I have watched since the beginning. Watching Melanie whine all the time is tiresome. Why not let her go instead of a solid character, such as Marlena. I think that Ken Corday makes really bad choices in who goes and comes. John and Marlena are quality characters and can play many different roles, as John has done recently. I haven’t liked the new John as much as the old, but I do like the humor he interjects. A balance of both characters would be great. NBC seems to have a problem with programming and they ignore what their listeners want. This is true throughout their network so that is why they are failing. I guess the saying that “The customer is always right” doesn’t count much with them. Oh well. So long farewell…
also wanted to say that the character of Nicole is too serious right now. She was great when she was allowed to have more humor. She can be down right funny.
Days is trying to change its audience to a younger crowd, but the joke is, that the show has been successful because of the older crowd.
I have no problem with adding fresh new characters, but taking away the seasoned ones, only takes away the seasoned audience.
I can’t belive this show first Bell & shawn now marlena and John big mistake this is why the ratings are so low they let all the good people go.
Crazy! That’s what they are for letting such a supercouple go who are the backbone of the show. Sure, Marlena annoys me with her squinty eyes and “perfect” goody-two-shoes self-righteous behavior.BUt hey, they have to have atleast one “semi-moral” person on the show who seems to know right from wrong.
I love John, the new one even better. The point is they are the older couple who the show is built on. It is so wrong to let them go. But then again, we all heard that STEFANO was leaving/let go/gone. And he is back! Never say never on this show. As one or more people said, they may be doing this (stupidly) for ratings-why, I don’t know. Because they will lose so many people. But maybe they are having them go for a bit, only to be reunited in the distant future. (let’s hope)

I am 57 years old and has watched DOOL since it aired and was 1/2 hour show..You have gotten rid of people before, but this is it..No wonder the ratings are in the toilet, you bring in all these young people who sleep with everything and anything..there is no love or loyalty, just stupid story lines..The one TRUE LOVE STORY you had, you are letting go, well if you think that is going to save your precious show, remember this, you are WRONG..John and Marlena were the show, without them you have nothing!!!!You can now have all the foolish stories you want, because they are not worth my time…It is amazing to me how other networks can keep they people and have great storylines…Whoever decided this, also decided your fate, you may have gotten DOOL renewed, but it WILL fail in the end. Hope you are satisified in driving loyal viewers away..
You just got rid of the best on Days of our lives. It is nice to see a more mature couple who still keep themselves together and look so good. Now us older people have no one to look at and say I can be like them. Bring them back
I have been watching DOOL for many, many years and I would say you are taking away the meat of the show. Shame on you Ken Corday, This will most likely be good bye to DOOL for me when they go.You should think about their return and I’ll see you then.Please leave them in place. Thank you.

Budget cuts don’t justify cutting the two most popular characters on the show. I agree with all the others, the Producers don’t really care what the fans want. Days may not always win emmys or SOD awards but they have the largest following of any soap out there and the most loyal fans. If the higher ups at this show can’t figure out what makes this show popular then who cares? After all these years, if Dee and Drake go – so go your fans Mr. Higher ups.
I too have watched Days since I was a teenager (many many years ago. I loved Days but anymore it is not worth watching. They are taking 2 of the people off that has kept me from going to another soap. Im canceling this newsletter as of now and finding a new soap to watch. Good bye Days!!!

this is really sad. i have been watching days for a very long time. john and marlena were my two favourate charatures on days. the head people have change the show so badly in the last few years and now the decide to get rid of to people that are really fan favourites i really don’t understand at all. the show is really going to go dow hill now. john and marlena will be sadly missed

I have watched Days since 1970 when I was expecting my first child. I kept watching Days all through the Doug and Julie years and also Bo and Hope. I love the characters of John and Marlena. Now that John and Marlena are being let go, can Bo and Hope be far behiind? Days has always had beautiful romantic storylines for us. All these younger characters sleeping with one and then the other leaves me ill–no romance just sex. Remember all you higher uppers that sex lasts about 20 min., but romance lasts a lifetime.
I have to agree with the last poster Linda. Sex is only 20 minutes and romance is something that lasts a lifetime. I have watched the show since the 70’s and at 41 years old it is the one thing I look forward to every night. I will miss John and Marlena, they are wonderful together, I can only hope they will return one day and it will be soon!!!
I have been watching this show so long I have seen a lot of the cast grow up.I would hate to see it be cut.I also would like to know how Alice Horton is doing.If there is a way couls you let me know.DONT CANCEL THE SHOW
I truly believe Drake and Deidre were as much a part of Days as Alice and Tom. Seems to be everyone uses the term “Budget Cuts” for everything they do. Sadly two beloved charcheters are gone. The story line of Lucas, Chloe, Daniel, Kate, please, let the four of them go. It goes nowhere. Bring in good stories, Kayla, Steve, Bo, and Hope, are wasted. Give them a good juicy storyline, ratings will go up, up, up. Maybe when Marlene and John get to Europe, something could happen, and Kayla, Steve, Bo and Hope go to Europe and rescue Marlene and John, and all will be well in Salem again. I know you think bringing some young blood into the show will be good, and you are probably correct, but please make every effort to get the right young blood there, and keep them there. Where is Victor and Caroline, there should be some type of romance there, but no, instead you have a professor pimping out his daughter, and young gentleman on drugs, and he shoots the professor, then gives all his rights for a projects to the professors daughter????? way out in left field…Back to Basics, and lets get on with it.
It is a very sad day for DOOL fans. I have watched DOOL for as long as I can remember. I truly loved the Marlena and John storyline. It was a true love story. Bo, Hope, Steve and Kayla are the last love storylines. The new actors on DOOL don’t display the character depth as the older actors do. It is a shame that due to budget cuts, the executives have felt the need to do what they have done. The show will not have the same appeal in the future as it as held in the past. Marlena and John will truly be missed!

It appears that Deidre and Drake wanted to leave without lots of hoopla – classy to the end – I’m just praying that the Economy picks up and these two wonderful actors can return to Salem in the near future…yep – from my mouth to God’s ears!! I miss them allready.
The powers that be at Days have really done it this time. What is left of a decent story line? I have watched Days since it began, but do not care to watch young people having swap sex with every character. Without sex, and lying, they haven’t a show. I will finally have an extra free hour in my day, not wasted on the current garbage. Remember Passions was cancelled for lack of storyline. I think Days will soon follow.

I say we all boycot the show until they bring back John & Doc. Take Kate, Cloho, Nichole, Nick, Chelsea, Daniel, Why in the world would you take the two top players in the soap out.Take all the newbies. Bring back John & Doc.
This is truly one of the saddest moments I have ever experienced with this soap. I have watched it through all the highs and lows and this is defintley the lowest. Some stories get old but John and Marlena never have. Deidre Hall has got to be one of the most classest actresses on TV. It is truly a terrible loss to the show and for fans.
Will truly miss Doc & John but hope they reemerge later on, when the show feels they can support their well-deserved salaries. Still solid vets on the show but not such great storylines for them. Don’t have to be outrageous/unbelievable – just good old-fashioned drama. DOOL’s pool of vets gives them the luxury of cashing in on decades old bad blood. Understand trying out new blood but they just sleep with each other, round and round. Chelsea has no chemistry w/Daniel & Nick is gone for awhile. Stephanie & Philip just doesn’t fly for me. Would like to see Philip & Melanie take a shot at it since she’d be a handful for him (remember how Chels used to be?). I don’t care for the development of Stephanie’s character the past few months. Maybe even Brady & Melanie but they seem like they can be friends as long as Brady has his principles…but if he gets dirty for Nicole, character is undermined. Agree I would have expected Victory & Caroline to hook up by now. EJ & Nicole has drug out too long. For all she’s done, when he ultimately discovers her deeds, she has to be dead, by his hand or Stefano’s. I don’t want to see Nicole turn a leaf; she should have stayed a peripheral player that steals scenes for being deliciously devilish. Kate & Daniel – didn’t care for together; no interesting storyline for Kate but would like to see that feral cat come out when Chloe gets busted (hope that is soon!). Would like to see Dr. Baker hang around. Who knows? Mia is so cute but I don’t see a continuing storyline for her. Will miss Tony. He and Anna didn’t enjoy the best storyline in the end but they have potential. Love those two together. Stephanie sure got away with inappropriately low cut clothing at Titan. Miss Jack/Jen and Alice. Wish Mickey & Maggie had some good stuff together. Enjoy seeing Julie & Doug’s effervescence. Love having Stefano back. Do something with that!
I have sent a comment to the producer of the show and would encourage everyone else to send comments and keep sending them until they get these two back on the show. I just can’t believe it. Get rid of some of these new kids and bring back the people who made the show so popular. HELP.
I have watched Days of Our lives every since it aired and believe me I am outraged about the “LETTING GO” of John and Marlena. DAYS just isn’t DAYS without this two characters as well as Bo and Hope, these characters savor the flavor of the show and without them I am sad to say you are going to lose another tearful eyed 54 year old “FAITHFUL FAN LOVER”.
