CBS Soap Cancelled

Those of you who are Guiding Light fans can say goodbye to the longest running program in broadcast history, as the light will soon be turned off, according to the Los Angeles Times and numerous other sources. CBS has unfortunately decided to pull the plug on the legendary soap, as it was announced yesterday on Wednesday, April 1. The final CBS episode is scheduled for Friday, September 18, 2009.

Guiding Light started off as a fifteen-minute radio show back in 1937. It began airing on CBS television in 1952, and by 1977 the daytime drama expanded to one hour. The show is owned by Procter & Gamble and was created by Irna Philips, who has been known as the "mother of the soap opera." Ellen Wheeler is the executive producer.

What does this mean for DAYS? Nothing for the time being. As reported back in November, NBC reached an agreement with Sony Pictures Television which would keep Days of Our Lives on the air until September 2010. DAYS could possibly remain with NBC for an additional year thereafter if all goes well. Many of us are upset over the firings of the beloved vets this year, but the ratings have fortunately managed to remain steady.

Heartfelt condolences go out to the cast, crew, and fans of Guiding Light. Please share your thoughts on this latest development. Are you a fan of this soap or is DAYS the main one you tune into?

I’m sorry to see Guiding Light go off the air. I’ve been a fan for a long time. Why are they cancelling this soap. Its a shame for CBS to cancel this soap. I will miss seeing this every day. I hope something is coming on good in its place.

Days isn’t my main soap, it is my ONLY soap.

I began watching i 1965 when I brought my baby home from delivering him.

Over the years I’ve not seen all episodes due to working, but I have loved every minute of the show, with a few storylines not being their bestl.
Thank youfor your ‘keping us updated’ Gwen.

I have watched DOOL longer than any other soap. I started watching GL years ago when Marcy Walker (former Eden from Santa Barbara) was on there. I’ve been hooked ever since. Really going to miss Josh, Reva, and the gang. Very sad to hear! Now I’m down to DOOL and Y&R.

Sorry to hear of GL’s exit. It has been apart of my life since radio on my lunch break and TV since l957 when we brought our first born home. It has always been a clean show.I hope they can tie all the loose ends up before the end. SAD in FL.

Days of Our Lives is a soap I have watched for nearly 20 years. Many of my friends and I would be so sad if this series was cancelled. It is a part of our daily routine, and we are very much attached to the characters. Please keep Days Alive!
