Joseph Mascolo is at his all-time candid best, when he discusses his Days of Our Lives exit in the latest issue of Soap Opera Digest. As viewers know, his character, Stefano, ends up shot "dead," this week.
Among the subjects Mascolo dishes and disses are the Stefano/Kate breakup, Stefano being responsible for Lexie's death, and the worst story twist penned by former Days head writers Darrell Ray Thomas, Jr. and Marlene McPherson: undoing Stefano and EJ's father and son relationship.
"When they wrote that, I couldn't figure it out," contends Mascolo. "As a matter of fact when James Scott (EJ) saw the business that Elvis wasn't Stefano's son, we both went, 'No, that's wrong.' We didn't want it that way."
Mascolo was opposed to the Stefano/Kate split, too, noting that the couple "were solid and in love. I thought breaking them up was such a bad move."
Another convoluted story point that greatly displeased the actor was making Stefano responsible for Lexie's brain tumor. "When Stefano got blamed for this business with Lexie's illness, I got very angry," admits Mascolo, noting that the father and daughter had always "had an absolutely pure relationship."
