An Eye for an Eye

By Gwen Morett, About.com

Stefano derides how Tony has a skeptical look on his face, as if his father is deluding himself. Tony tells him it’s not fair. “What is unfair is being pumped full of drugs and imprisoned in my own body!” roars Stefano. Tony wonders if Stefano is possibly mistaken, revealing that Roman already proved that he was injected with sodium pentathol, also known as truth serum. “Do you think truth serum paralyzes you?” questions a bewildered Stefano. Tony suggests that maybe he had an adverse reaction. Stefano coughs and insists otherwise. Tony implores Stefano to think about his legacy and family, urging him to prove that he actually has heart and a conscience, but Stefano refuses.

Marlena is still lying on her bedroom floor unable to move. “Help me,” she utters. John and Anna later arrive and find her. A horrified Anna begins to panic and John urges her to call 911. John checks Blondie’s pulse and notes that she’s not breathing. He sees the syringe on the floor and administers CPR as a frantic Anna tells the operator that they need an ambulance. E.J. and Sami arrive on the scene, where Sami’s heart sinks upon finding Marlena on the floor. Sami cries and urges her mom to fight. E.J. holds her as John continues to administer CPR. Marlena opens her eyes and comes to, which relieves Sami.

Stefano asks Tony if he still believes he’s faking his paralysis. Tony believes that whatever Stefano has suffered through may have destroyed his recollection. He exits the room to find an unsettled Anna, who reveals that she and John found Marlena on the bedroom floor of her townhouse and she’s been brought to the hospital. Tony immediately suspects Stefano. Anna chastises Tony for not revealing that Stefano was alive and awake.

Nearby, a frantic Sami pleads with Kayla to do something for Marlena. A nurse mentions how fortunate it is that John found Marlena when he did. “You saved her life John,” says E.J. Kayla leads Sami, E.J., and John outside the room before she attends to Marlena. Sami insists that they need to find out what Stefano did to her mom. John assures her that he’ll have a talk with Stefano. Sami pleads with him not to now, because her mom needs him.

Back in Blondie’s room, the nurse informs Kayla of the suspicion that Marlena was poisoned, since the EMTs found a hypodermic needle at her home. Kayla instructs the nurse to have the blood matched to the syringe. She encourages Marlena to hang in there. She then marches outside, where John asks about Marlena. Kayla says they don’t know yet, but they’re running tests. “Yes. You people are good at that,” jeers John. “You really have become a cold bastard haven’t you?” responds Kayla. She then confronts him about standing in the back of the church like a coward at Bo and Hope’s wedding, noting how it almost looked as though John enjoyed seeing Bo taken away by his brother. John claims she saw only what she wanted to see. Kayla recalls how the ‘old’ John said that Bo and Hope were like his family, and would’ve done anything to protect them. “Now it’s almost as if you reveled in their misery and their humiliation,” surmises Kayla. John states that she will never know what he feels. She implores him to look her in the eye and tell her that his old self isn’t buried inside trying to break free, insisting that he’s a good man on the inside. She expresses how the woman just inside is and always will be the great love of his life. John appears a bit moved by Kayla’s words and slowly walks in Marlena’s room looking at her with concern, which Sami witnesses.

Sami enters her mom’s room and asks if there’s any change, but John says no. Sami tearfully expresses how hard it is to see her mom in her condition, since Marlena’s the one usually taking care of everyone else. She brings up how she and John have had their ups and downs lately, but expresses how grateful she is that he saved Marlena’s life. “She loves you. She has always loved you, and she always will,” professes Sami, who believes that John loves her too. Sami suggests that they need to start having faith in who he is now. John says he will hold her to that.

Back outside Stefano’s room, Anna whines to Tony how she was riding around on John’s Harley trying to find Marlena while Tony was visiting his father. She expresses relief that she and John found Marlena and asks Tony if she has “helmet hair.” Tony refers to Anna'sactions as courageous. She claims any decent human being would’ve done the same thing. Tony praises her for her generosity, passion, and nerve. Anna smiles how he has more nerve than he knows what to do with, expressing how proud of him she is. They share a few brief kisses before he goes back inside to talk with Stefano.

Tony asks Stefano why he did it and rants how Marlena’s fighting for her life. “She drew first blood, and I responded in kind,” affirms Stefano. Tony is disgusted at how hurting innocent people brings Stefano great satisfaction. Stefano declares that he never laid a hand on Marlena. Tony chastises Stefano for his psychotic actions. Stefano implores Tony to take a good hard look at him, noting how he can’t move. He tells Tony to get the hell out of his sight and clarifies that he made a promise to himself to return the favor to Marlena. Tony refuses to let Stefano turn Salem into his carnival of horrors. The two continue to argue about family, revenge, and power. Stefano urges Tony to decide which side he’s on, warning him that the lines are about to be drawn.

Anna asks Kayla if she got Marlena’s test results back, but Kayla says they’re still waiting. She asks if Bo and Hope are okay, but Kayla says she doesn’t know and isn’t feeling very optimistic, since there are serious charges against her brother. Anna admits that if it was her brother, she’d probably do the same thing that Bo did for Philip. Kayla then thanks Anna for alerting John as to what was going on.

Anna encounters E.J. and notes how exhausted he looks. Sami approaches E.J. and needs to talk to him alone. After they walk off together, Anna prays to God to protect them from Stefano’s evil. Just then, a purple gas begins to drift out of the vents.
