The Excitement of Discovery

By , About.com Guide

Stefano recalls how Martino Vitali’s daughter was rather lovely and wonders what she has to do with John. John says it’s a long story. E.J. tells Stefano that John couldn’t quite be the person whom Marlena wanted him to be, so he moved on. John asserts to Stefano that because he has targeted Blondie, he now cares about her and anybody else she cares about. Stefano notes how E.J. seems to know a lot about John’s life. “That’s because he lives in my mansion. And as my lawyer he has been very helpful,” reveals John. Stefano refers to this as another betrayal. John proceeds to go check on Marlena, warning Stefano that if she dies, so does he.

Sami urges her mom to fight this, assuring her that Aunt Kayla’s going to find a way to help her. John enters and implores her to fight, declaring that he’s going to help her.

“Et tu, Elvis,” remarks Stefano. E.J. asserts that he did not betray Stefano, stating that he has his own reasons for wanting John destroyed. Stefano implores E.J. to tell him why he wants to destroy John. John himself enters and tells E.J. that his time’s up. He takes a cigar and calmly threatens to hurt Stefano unless he talks. Stefano chuckles how he can’t feel anything as long as he’s partially paralyzed. John believes he’s lying and intends to find out. He bends Stefano’s hands back. “You break even my little finger, and someone else you love will pay,” admonishes Stefano.

Sami marches over to Stefano’s room ready to talk to him, but E.J. stops her from going in and tells her that John is inside. Sami is determined to make Stefano tell her how to save Marlena. They hear a banging sound. Back in Stefano’s room, he announces that the fate of his enemies is sealed. Sami has a strange feeling that something’s going to happen and excuses herself to get some air. John implores Stefano to tell him what he’s done. Stefano claims he can’t tell, since it would take away the “excitement of discovery.” John assumes that there’s a way to stop it, but Stefano states that once it’s started there’s no way to stop it. “Then there’s nothing left for me to do but deny you the pleasure of watching it happen,” previews John before he tries to choke Stefano. Steve bursts in and grabs John from behind, insisting that he can’t kill Stefano. Steve manages to get a belligerent John off of Stefano. He warns John that if he kills Stefano, he’ll be killing Marlena too. John agrees to let him live for now. Stefano thanks Steve, who threatens to kill him if John isn’t around to do it when it’s time for him to die.

Tony later enters Marlena’s room and expresses how he hates seeing her like this. He asks her if she’s responsible for putting Stefano is his paralytic state. “Yes,” she whispers, as she claims she had no choice. Tony expresses his disappointment in his friend. “What you did was wrong and evil,” he gently scolds her. “I had to protect my family,” insists a weak Marlena. Tony notes how she sounds just like Stefano. Marlena confesses that she’s not sorry. Tony prays to God that Stefano doesn’t succeed in killing her. He thinks there’s a strong possibility that Stefano will try to kill her, but believes that Stefano came back because he wants to kill them all.

Anna visits Marlena after Tony leaves, recalling how upset Tony was when he left the room. Marlena whispers that he’s worried about Stefano. Anna expresses her concern for Marlena and urges her not to give up, assuring her that Kayla and the other doctors will make her better. She insists that they can figure out a way to destroy Stefano once and for all. “Revenge. That’s how it began,” whispers a teary-eyed Marlena.

Kayla is in the lab and thinks she’s found something which can help Marlena. In Marlena’s room, Anna looks at Marlena helplessly and realizes that she’s getting worse. She curses Stefano and also curses Tony for not telling any of them that Stefano was awake. Kayla enters and needs to speak with Marlena alone, thinking she might’ve found something to slow down the process.

After Anna exits, Kayla explains how she combined anti-toxins. She warns Marlena that what might cure her might also make her worse. She is afraid Marlena will be completely paralyzed soon and asks if she wants to take the risk.

Sami returns outside Stefano’s room and tells E.J. that she just tried to go up on the roof, but the door is locked. He tries to call, but the phone’s dead. Sami says she tried to use her cell phone earlier but couldn’t get any reception. E.J. proceeds to check the other doors while Sami goes to check the elevator.

Sami and E.J. meet up again, where Sami informs him that the elevator doors aren’t working, and E.J. tells her that all of the stairwell doors are locked. E.J. notes how weird it is that everything is either locked or cut off. Sami places the blame onto Stefano. They proceed to have a talk with him.

Anna enters Stefano’s room and is startled to find he has disappeared. John and Tony aren’t far behind. Anna tells John that Kayla thinks she may have found something to help Marlena. John surmises that Stefano was faking his paralysis. E.J. and Sami arrive on the scene and find out that Stefano’s missing. E.J. alerts them that everything is blocked and the phones are out. They hear a news bulletin on TV, which reveals that the seventh floor of the hospital has been locked down in what appears to be a quarantine situation. John confronts Tony over knowing that Stefano was awake. Sami notices the purple gas drifting out of the vent.

Steve enters the lab with Joe looking for Kayla, but she’s not there. As Joe cries, Steve hears the door lock and walks over to it and calls for help. He then sees a purple gas drift out of the vent. Steve takes Joe’s car seat and puts him on the ground and covers him, then reaches up for the vent, but is unable to do anything to stop the gas from seeping out.

Back in Marlena’s room, she reluctantly agrees to take the risk and try Kayla’s antidote, even after Kayla has warned her of the risks. Kayla starts coughing as the purple gas drifts out of the vents.
