The Bondage of Matrimony

By Gwen Morett, About.com

Max and Stephanie are still in jail in Marseille, France. Max continues to protest about rotting in jail and rants how ridiculous it is that they can’t even make a call. Steph gets all vamped up for the guard. This amuses Max, who doesn’t think her feminine wiles will work on a cop. He offers to give her a hundred bucks if it works. “You don’t have a hundred bucks,” Steph reminds him. He offers to take her to dinner if and when they get back to Salem. The guard comes over, and it’s honestly hard to tell if the guard is a man or a woman.

Max later quips how well Steph’s plan went and even wonders himself if the guard was a “she,” as he got confused with the baggy pants, the big muscles, and tiny mustache. Steph gets the picture and tells him to stop teasing. Max tells her she did good, but it will take more than a low cut dress and a cute smile to calm the bozos. A guard named Sebastian, or “Seb” approaches them and asks Steph if she’s the race car driver, noting how familiar she looks. She introduces herself as the one and only Stephanie Johnson. He remembers seeing her race a while ago when she crashed. Sebastian bends the rules and hands over her cell phone to make a call. Stephanie thanks him and gives him a quick kiss on the cheek. She calls her parents and leaves a message, asking them to call her back. She hangs up and predicts that her parents will kill her. Max suggests calling Roman and Bo, since they could pull some strings. Steph would rather her parents find out from her than from someone else. Max jokes about calling Daphne, but Steph says no way, since she’s an editor of a tabloid. Steph is delighted to see a message from Nick, who says he’s there in Marseille.

Nick arrives in France and runs into Melanie and her friend at a restaurant. He briefly flashes back to seeing Melanie’s video blog. He overhears Melanie revealing that she’s short of cash and she needs to find a new guy to mooch off of. Meanwhile, Nick pretends to be on the phone talking to someone about wanting six figures for his prototype. “I think I just found my new man,” smiles Melanie.

Melanie and her friend check out Nick from afar. Her friend surmises that Nick probably likes the intellectual type and suggests that Melanie wear her glasses. Melanie approaches Nick and asks him if he’s done with the paper. Nick claims he only reads the financial section and invites Melanie to join him. Melanie’s friend approaches her after Nick goes to fetch some drinks and tells her to give a signal if Nick starts to get creepy. Nick brings Melanie a sparkling water and notes she’s reading the arts and entertainment section. He teases her about it and she laughs and tells him to shut up. She reveals that she’s a student and asks him what he’s doing in Marseille and how long he’s there. Nick receives a call from Steph, who reveals that she and Max and in jail. Steph briefly informs him that they met Max’s sister, who’s a con artist. Melanie innocently asks Nick who was on the phone.

After Stephanie hangs up, Max hopes that Nick can get them out of jail. Steph suggests it would be great if they could go home tomorrow, eat a burger, and sleep in their own beds. Max thinks he’s going to stick around a while since he feels as though he’s barely gotten to know Melanie. Steph refers to Melanie as rude, shallow, manipulative, and a liar. Max suggests that it’s perhaps an act and she just demands a lot of attention. Steph believes that Melanie only cares about herself.

Back at the French restaurant, Melanie puts on the charm and tries to find out who Nick was talking to, wondering if it was his girlfriend. Nick says he doesn’t have a girlfriend, but had one for about a year. He questions if she has a boyfriend. “Not today, but who knows what tomorrow will bring,” she coyly implies. She invites him to get a bite to eat. Nick takes Melanie up on the invitation, but he needs to run an errand first. He concocts a story about his passport being stolen and needs to go to the police station to pick it up. He invites her to come along and then they can grab a late lunch.

Melanie rejoins her friend, believing that she’s conned Nick. The girls share a giddy moment as Melanie’s friend agrees to book the tickets to Milan. Mel’s friend introduces herself as Michelle to Nick. Melanie then leaves with Nick.

Nick and Melanie later arrive at the jail. “Look who I bumped into,” announces Nick. Melanie is stunned to realize that Nick knows Max and Stephanie and wonders if it’s some sort of ambush.

Trent approaches Nicole at the Brady Pub. She tells him to go to hell. He quips what a rapport they have, calling it “the bondage of matrimony.” She claims she would’ve taken care of ending their marriage if she had known he had no intentions of getting a divorce. Trent recalls he could barely take care of herself back then and notes that it’s still a struggle. She refuses to put up with his derisiveness. He refers to her as a helpless little girl who craves attention from men, such as E.J. Nicole claims that nothing is going on between her and E.J. Trent taunts her about telling Victor that he’s legally married to her. Nicole tells him to leave her alone, reminding him that she’s done everything he’s asked. Trent dials Victor’s number, so an agitated Nicole grabs the phone and says she’ll do what he wants.

Trent tells Nicole about a young woman whom Max has come into contact with in France, revealing that her name is Melanie. Nicole demands to know who Melanie is. He hesitates before revealing that Melanie’s his daughter. Nicole scoffs how he has kids popping up all over the place. She asks what he wants her to do about Melanie. “Find out if she’s run into Max,” orders Trent. Nicole wonders why Melanie wouldn’t tell her own father about running into her own brother. Trent refers to his daughter as very cunning and wants her as far away from Max as possible. Nicole quickly figures out that Trent’s afraid Max will tell his sister what an SOB her father really is. Trent claims he’s confident enough in his relationship with Melanie and couldn’t care less what Max says to her. “I’ll bet,” snarks Nicole.
