A Wondrous System

By Gwen Morett, About.com

In jail, Lucas doesn’t know how much longer he can stay behind bars. As Stefano reads his book, he tells Lucas to just relax and make a peanut butter sandwich. Lucas tells Stefano that he’s getting on his nerves and challenges the Phoenix to spend some money and get himself out of there. “Lawyers are a funny breed,” muses Stefano, who proposes to get Lucas out in 24 hours. Lucas assumes that he’ll be indebted to Stefano if he takes him up on his offer and wonders what he needs to do to pay off his debt. Stefano remarks how Lucas makes it sound so manipulative. “Manipulative? Stefano DiMera? No, you don’t know how to do that do you?” quips Lucas. They are interrupted by an officer who announces that Stefano’s lawyers are there to see him. After Stefano leaves his cell, Lucas mutters how he knows exactly what happens to people who make deals with Stefano DiMera. Lucas then searches through Stefano’s things searching for the cell phone. He finds it and proceeds to call Sami.

In Sami’s apartment, she’s having a bit of difficulty closing an over-packed suitcase. EJ wonders if she really needs all her things. “Can you tell me for sure how long we’re going to be hiding from your father?” she asks. He says no. She insists on taking the twins to the pediatrician before they go, but he swipes the phone from her and says it’s dangerous for her to be out in public. She states her intention to stay as far away from him as possible when he’s not helping out with the twins. EJ suspects that Sami wants to hide from him instead of with him. Sami claims she just wants to avoid an uncomfortable situation. When they hear one of the twins in the bedroom, Sami tells him that it’s his turn.

After EJ tends walks into the bedroom, Sami receives a call from Lucas, who urges her not to hang up. He wants to know why she hasn’t returned any calls from his lawyers. She claims she’s really busy dealing with her own mess of problems right now. He admits he screwed up, but did it for her and would take it back if he could. He then asks about Allie. She assures him that Allie’s okay, but can’t bring her over to visit. Sami reveals that she’s taking the twins someplace safe away from Stefano and will get her dad to get him all the information. Lucas wonders if she’s doing it to get even with him, but she affirms that she’s doing it to protect their twins from Stefano. “How is he going to hurt you? How is he going to hurt anybody when he’s here?” questions an agitated Lucas. Sami is stunned by this revelation. She warns him against talking to her with Stefano right there. Lucas assures her it’s okay, since Stefano’s with his attorneys right now. He reveals that Stefano smuggled a cell phone in the jail cell, then asks how she’s doing. “I’m scared,” she sighs. Lucas insists that she has nothing to be scared of, since Stefano’s in jail. Sami is dubious and theorizes that Stefano can still reach through those bars and grab anything he wants, including his grandson. Lucas assumes that she’s not going to tell him where she’s going. Sami insists that she doesn’t know, but Abe is taking them someplace safe. EJ then emerges from the bedroom, which Lucas overhears and is nonetheless too pleased. “What the hell is EJ doing in our apartment?” demands Lucas. Sami says they can’t talk about it now and hangs up on him. She reveals to EJ that Lucas’s cell mate is Stefano and fears what could happen to Lucas. EJ speculates that Lucas is at the safest place he can be, since Stefano doesn’t get his own hands dirty. “God, EJ. I hope you’re right,” worries Sami.

After Sami hangs up, Lucas hears Stefano coming and quickly puts the phone back in place before sitting on his bunk. He notes that Stefano wasn’t gone very long. “Did you miss me?” jokes Stefano. Lucas implores Stefano to spill what his condition is for springing him out of jail. Stefano implies how he could use a little assistance in getting his grandson away from his parents. “You want me to kidnap Sami’s son?” assumes Lucas. Stefano confirms this and believes it sounds reasonable, but Lucas disagrees. Stefano figured it would sound enticing to him, since Elvis would obviously be out of Sami’s life if “Giovanni” was. Lucas admits he’d like nothing more than to have EJ out of Sami’s life, but isn’t interested in kidnaping Sami’s son. An officer then announces that it’s time for Lucas to stretch his legs. After Lucas leaves the cell, Stefano checks to see if Lucas made any calls while he was away. He then calls Sami. Sami rushes to answer her phone and assumes it’s Lucas. “Lucas, listen to me. You have to stop calling me because with Stefano, who knows what that the hell that son of a bitch has done to his phone?” she babbles. A spooked Sami then quickly hangs up upon hearing Stefano’s voice and throws her phone down. EJ turns her phone off and tries to assure her that it’s going to be alright. An unsettled Sami head into the bedroom, to EJ’s dismay.

Belle dreams of Claire in her hospital room before she wakes up. Philip is right by her side to stroke her hair and comfort her. She asks if Claire’s been found. Philip replies that Claire is still missing. Belle cries how she was dreaming about Claire screaming for her mommy and she couldn’t get her. She wants to go find her, but Philip encourages her to stay in bed and assures her that Shawn won’t come back without Claire. She doesn’t want to sleep, so Philip suggests calling a nurse to get her something to help her sleep. A distressed Belle then gets herself worked up and starts coughing. Philip fetches her some water. She thanks him and calms down. He notes how exhausted she looks. She suggests he go back to work, but he insists that work can wait and this is where he wants to be. She tells him to stop being so great, since it’s just making her feel worse.
