The End of a Fairy Tale Marriage

By Gwen Morett, About.com

At the pub, Caroline glares at Trent before going over to Victor and giving him a slice of her best apple pie. Victor obviously thinks it’s cute as he says he didn’t order any pie. She thought he could use something sweet to offset the taste of the bitter divorce settlement. He tells her that she has a way of making the worst situation tolerable. “I wish that were true,” she responds. He asks her if something’s wrong.

Nearby, Max informs Steph that Lucas was arrested last night for violating the terms of his house arrest. As a result, he’ll have to go back to prison. Steph notes that the rest of Salem finally got their power back. She asks if he wants to tell his mom to take the afternoon off. Max doubts that Caroline will want to leave, noting how she’s having an intense conversation with Victor. Steph mentions how cool Caroline was when Max told her about Trent and his sister. Max relays how Caroline encouraged him to go find Melanie. He looks over at Trent, then pulls out the photo of Melanie from his pocket. We see a flashback of Max ransacking Trent’s hotel room and finding the photo of Melanie.

Nicole meets E.J. outside the pub to get her final divorce papers signed. She wonders if there’s a reason Victor agreed to end their marriage at the Brady Pub. E.J. suggested the pub because it’s a neutral territory. “Whatever. I just wanna end this depressing chapter in my life,” expresses Nicole. E.J. wants to know why he doesn’t want a relationship with her. She asserts that what happened in the elevator was a one time thing.

Back inside, Max approaches Trent, who asks him why he called. Max declares that he’s tired of hating him, admitting how every time he sees Trent, he thinks about his mom and what she must’ve gone through trying to raise him. Max expresses how this insane amount of anger builds inside him and he takes it out on the people he loves.

Caroline shares her concerns for Max with Victor, who agrees that the situation with Max’s father and sister has the potential for disaster. Caroline feels the need to protect him. Victor assures her that she already has, and Max is certainly capable of meeting any adversity that comes his way. Caroline still worries about things going wrong in Max’s search for his sis. Victor advises her to let those cards fall where they may, but Caroline admits she’s not very good at leaving things to chance. Victor takes her hand and admits that neither is he. “Whatever the case, Max is going to be grateful for any support and encouragement that comes his way. I know I am,” he assures. Caroline believes she’s spent enough of his time burdening him with her problems and assumes that he wants some time to himself before signing his divorce papers. Victor plans to celebrate the minute the papers are signed and filed. He invites her to go to the see Citizen Kane movie later. Caroline happily accepts and laughs how she hasn’t gone to a movie in a long time.

E.J. and Nicole enter, where Nicole requests a bottle of her best champagne to celebrate. E.J. asks Victor if his lawyer will be joining them, but Victor says he has a family emergency and they can proceed without him. We see a series of flashbacks of Nicole and Victor, which include being in the limo before they made love for the first time, being in his bedroom, getting married at the mansion, then Victor nearly choking her to death. Nicole comes back to reality and is thankful their marriage is finally over. Stephanie brings champagne glasses over and E.J. pours the champagne. Nicole proposes a toast to happy endings and good health. Victor suddenly feels dizzy and Nicole seems genuinely concerned for her ex. E.J. suggests calling 911, but a perspiring Victor claims he’s fine. Nicole surmises that he’s perhaps a little excited to be getting rid of her. Victor admits that he’ll be glad to see her go.

Steph and Caroline are at the bar, where Steph notes how weird it is that Victor and Nicole are laughing and drinking champagne together. Caroline reveals that Victor and Nicole are signing divorce papers today. Steph encourages Caroline to go out with Victor. Caroline affirms that Victor’s just a really dear friend. “Who used to something more than that,” adds Steph. Caroline can only imagine what her kids would say about her dating. She shares her worry for Max and prays that Melanie is nothing like her father.

Meanwhile, Max expresses to Trent how he’s tired of hating him. He proposes calling a truce and going their separate ways. Caroline and Steph glance over at Max and Trent and wonder what they’re talking about. Caroline shares how lucky Max is to have Steph and is impressed with the way Steph has stood by Max, despite his anger. She implores Steph not to let Max push her away. Steph is determined to stand by her man.

Max hands the photo of Melanie back to Trent and assures him that he won’t ask again who she is. He urges Trent to turn around and walk the other way when Trent sees him walking down the street, and he’ll do the same. Trent says it shouldn’t be a problem, then assumes that Max will never forgive him for abandoning him and his mother. “Nope. But at least I don’t hate you anymore,” he confirms. Steph states her intention to Max to help him find his sister, but Max won’t allow it.

Trent puts the photo of Melanie in his pocket, then looks over at Nicole laughing and drinking champagne with Victor and E.J. Nicole approaches Trent and asks if he’s spying on her. Trent notes that she hasn’t severed her relationship with E.J. Nicole affirms that E.J. is her lawyer, and he’s helping her with some business. She reminds Trent that he’s hiding a lot, which includes an illegitimate son and orders him to stay out of her life.

Steph asks Max when he wants to go find his sister, but Max claims he’s changed his mind about it. Steph doesn’t understand his change of heart. Max shares how he spoke with Trent and wants to move past that part of his life. A confused Steph asks what’s going on with him. Max declares that as far as he’s concerned, his family is the Bradys. He assures Steph that he loves her and they embrace.
