Trump Charges

By Gwen Morett, About.com

At the DiMera mansion, Ava moans “more” on the sofa as John gives her a feet rub. She purrs how making love with him earlier was magical, and she would adore a repeat performance. John admits he would too, but not there. An eager Ava wonders if he’s afraid someone might walk in on them. E.J. then appears and gravely reveals that he just came back from meeting with the assistant D.A. and cautions Ava not to make any long-term plans. John leaves to let them talk in private, assuring Ava that he’ll be back when she’s finished.

E.J. informs her that the D.A. pretty much folded out the deck in front of him. “I think they hold all the cards. I think this is going to be really tough,” he speculates. Ava implores him to tell her everything without holding back. E.J. informs her that unfortunately, the prosecution has overwhelming evidence against her already, and they haven’t even filed the kidnapping charges or the shooting of Hope yet. According to the D.A., the charges are “trump charges” when compared to what happened in Ireland. He previews that the international portion of the trial will move forward first and suspects that the D.A. is getting pressure from the federal government. He says the only defense they have is that she was under the influence of drugs. Ava assumes that she’s going to be convicted of sabotage and murder. He warns her that the D.A. has an extremely strong case, but tries to assure her that they’ll do everything they can. Ava insists that if she could change any of it, she would.

Ava later asks him if he knows what it’s like to look back on his life and realize that he’s made one mistake after another which have hurt people. E.J. claims they all go through that at one time and implores her to be strong. He insists that he’s a good lawyer, but doesn’t know any lawyer in this country who would be able to convince a jury to acquit her. Ava notes that he doesn’t pull any punches. E.J. painfully reminds her of the two pilots who are dead, along with Shawn Brady. Ava is floored when E.J. reveals that there’s no evidence which ties her to sabotaging the plane, but one of her cousins is going to testify against her in exchange for immunity from prosecution. E.J. also informs her that the Irish government’s going to be involved. Ava assumes she’s going to rot in an Irish prison. E.J. believes they can buy some time, but the first thing they need to do is make sure she’s not extradited to Ireland. He warns her that she’s going to have to start thinking about making a deal, since there’s a strong likelihood she’s going to prison. She admits that she wishes her father was still alive, since he would know how to fix this one. E.J. reminds her that they both know some good people and some powerful people. He urges her to talk to whomever she needs to, and he’ll do the same. After he leaves, Ava sits and cries.

Kate has a drink with Tony at the Brady Pub in celebration of her successful Hearth & Home product line. Roman arrives and asks them what they’re celebrating. She shares how her product line has really taken off. Tony raves how the preliminary sales projections are through the roof. Kate credits the American consumer to her success. She admits that she may not be America’s happy housewife, but claims she knows quality. Tony implies how he deserves some of the credit and predicts that she’ll knock Martha Stewart off a pedestal and be the “ultimate American housewife.” Roman chuckles at this, then takes a phone call. Afterwards, Roman reveals that the cops have some new information which leads them to believe that Paul Hollingsworth might’ve met with foul play. Kate asks Roman if he thinks Paul’s dead. Roman says they don’t know right now and reminds her that he can’t give her specifics of an ongoing investigation. She flashes back to hearing Philip’s voice on the recorder, then offering to burn it. Roman congratulates Tony and Kate on their success, then leaves.

Tony notes how upset Kate looks and questions what she’s trying to hide. Kate claims that any act of violence that comes close to her family upsets her, especially since Philip has taken an interest in Paul’s daughter. Tony admits that he’s very fond of Morgan. Kate proceeds to call Philip and tell him what Roman said. Tony flashes back to John asking him for help regarding Paul. “I wonder if dear Uncle John had anything to do with this,” he muses.

Hope arrives home and asks Bo how Ciara’s doing. Bo tells her that Ciara’s sleeping and Ma just took off after being over for dinner. Hope notes that he seems upset and questions what’s going on. Bo fills her in on the cops finding Paul Hollingsworth’s jacket in the river. He phones Philip. “Damn it!” Bo exclaims after not being able to reach him. Hope asks who he’s trying to call, but Bo keeps mum and claims it doesn’t matter. A suspicious Hope questions why he’s so angry and suspects that he knows something about Paul’s disappearance. Bo lies that he doesn’t know anything more than she does, but Hope isn’t buying it. Hope accuses him of keeping something from her, reminding him that she’s involved in the case. Bo declares that he wants to work this case on his own, and it’s for her own good. Hope rambles how the whole department is involved in the case, which involves drugs, arson, blackmail, possible murder, among other things. “Are you in danger?” she questions. Bo claims he just wants to protect her from any future fallout. “I don’t need your protection. I need you to trust me!” she asserts. Bo states that the trust thing goes both ways, and insists that he has a very good reason for doing what he’s doing. He leaves and just asks her to trust him. “No. I don’t trust you. I can’t,” she says after he walks out.

At the police station, Abe has just told Morgan about the cops finding her father’s jacket in the river. He suggests that Philip wait outside. Morgan questions where in the river Paul’s jacket was found. Abe reveals that it was not far from the docks, and snagged on some wires. Morgan fears her father was killed, but Abe doesn’t want to jump to conclusions.
