The 4th of July party is still going on at Bo and Hopes house. The lights come back on as Daniel and Chelsea are kissing. Caroline, Doug, Julie, Bo, Hope, Mickey, and Maggie witness the passionate exchange. Daniel and Chelsea sneak away from their audience, which doesnt exactly please Bo. Hope notes that hes clenching his jaw and has a massive vein in his forehead. Caroline quips to Victor how his little talk with Daniel did a world of good. Kate arrives at the party and sees Chelsea and Daniel kissing, then passes out.
Daniel and Bo are by an unconscious Kates side as she is later lying on a lawn chair. Victor grumbles how Kate just had surgery, and the last thing she needed to witness was Daniel and Chelsea kissing. Doug and Julie come rushing out of the house with pillows for Kates feet. Daniel intends to get her to the hospital if she doesnt come to in a couple of minutes. Abe, Lexie, and Theo arrive, where Bo informs them of the situation. Bo speculates that she passed out because of the heat. Abe, Lexie, and Theo proceed to fetch some orange juice for Kate. Lexie appears a tad bit jealous as she stalls and remarks how she didnt think Daniel was going to get involved with Chelsea.
Kate later wakes up and claims shes just feeling a little lightheaded. Chelsea asks her grandma what shes doing there. Kate thought shed have a good time today. Two days after your surgery? Are you crazy? questions a bewildered Chelsea. Kate believes she should be the one asking questions. Daniel asks Kate if she can get up. A woozy Kate stands up and summons Chelsea to come with her to talk. Victor and Maggie help Kate inside.
Chelsea later sits next to Kate inside the Brady house as Victor sits nearby. Kate refers to Daniel and Chelseas relationship as totally inappropriate. Chelsea wonders why, since they make each other happy. Kate brings up the age difference, but Chelsea doesnt buy that excuse from her grandmother. Kate predicts that Daniel will hurt Chelsea and orders her to break things off with him.
Back outside, Lexie reminds Daniel how he confided in her and was ready to leave town because of Chelsea. She urges him to think things through. Daniel declares that hes done thinking about it, expressing how it feels right. The fireworks show is on display outside as the crowd enjoys the show. Daniel looks longingly at Chelsea before he goes inside.
At the DiMera mansion, Marlena is outside the lab when John and Ava open the door. We are made wise not by the recollection of our past, but by the responsibility for our future, John quotes from George Bernard Shaw. Marlena asks him what hes done. She is crestfallen to walk into the lab and see it destroyed. She expresses her disappointment in him for destroying the equipment and chastises him for destroying his past. Im a big boy. I make my own decisions, responds John. He complains how tired he is of chasing ghosts. Just for the record, I didnt do this on a whim, he admits. Marlena warns him that hes the one whos going to suffer the most and declares that the kind, loving, generous man he once was is gone forever. You are just a hateful shell of the man I once loved, spits a disgusted Marlena before she storms out. John tells Ava that he didnt mean to hurt Marlena. Ava assures John that he did whats right for him.
Upstairs, Sami walks around with a flashlight looking for Lucas. She searches for the ankle bracelet in the living room when Marlena emerges and startles Sami. Sami claims shes looking for her earring and notes how upset her mother looks, assuming that John is the cause of it. Marlena desponds that shes lost John for good. Sami consoles her mom and suggests that maybe its time for her to have a clean start. Marlena cries how John took away her hope. Sami waltzes over to Ava and John as they emerge and lays into John for hurting her mother. John tells her its none of her business, but Sami begs to differ. She calls him a coward and a fool for throwing his life away. John asserts that its his life, and he can do what he wants to with it. Marlena tells John that she or his friends in the ISA couldve helped him, but instead he turned to a stranger. Not just a stranger. A kidnapper and a murderer, adds a peeved Sami. Ava refers to herself as a victim who shares in the struggle with John. And unlike all of you I actually know what he needs, states Ava. The hell you do! exclaims Sami. You know nothing of his struggle, or of mine! asserts Marlena. John tells them to stop it. He tells Blondie that its just memories which are all obsolete. Marlena is incredulous that he could just carry on without knowing who he is or who he loved. He states that at least now hes in control of his own life and his own destiny.
John and Ava head upstairs to freshen up. Sami fumes how John could hurt Marlena like this. Marlena believes she did too much for too long. Sami praises her mom for being so patient and working so hard in regards to John. Marlena changes the subject to E.J., and Lucas. Sami confesses that she loves Lucas and wants to spend the rest of her life with him, but she cant erase what happened with E.J. and make it go away. Sami shares how she told E.J. that in no uncertain terms can they ever have a future together, since she loves Lucas. Marlena asks if shes told Lucas that. Sami confirms that she has, but is willing to tell him a million times if she has to. She is eager to get out of there and wants to take the twins somewhere that is air conditioned. Marlena suggests Bo and Hopes, but Sami declines since theres a party there with happy people. Marlena believes Salem Inn has some backup power. Sami invites her mom to come with her and hang out, but Marlena insists on staying at the mansion. The ladies embrace each other and exchange I love yous.
