Deadbeat Dad

By Gwen Morett, About.com

At the police station, Roman jokes how Bo didn’t have to get all dressed up just for him. Roman apologizes for interrupting his evening with Hope, but Bo says no problem since Ciara came down with a tummy ache. Bo admits that he and Hope had a disagreement about Chelsea, revealing that she was out on a date with Daniel. Roman questions if Daniel’s a bit old for her. Bo asks what Roman would do if Chelsea was his daughter. Roman points out that Chelsea’s a grown woman now and he’d try to just stay out of it. “At least the guy’s not a DiMera,” he jokes. He then informs Bo that Paul Hollingsworth is missing and fills Bo in on how Chloe claimed she saw Paul on the pier the night of the fire. Roman adds that Paul bought a plane ticket headed to South America. “He checked his luggage, but he never boarded,” he reveals. “John Black,” assumes Bo. The brothers continue to discuss Paul before Roman suggests they take walk through his apartment. Roman predicts that if Paul has gone missing, then John will be a suspect in something even more serious than arson and drug trafficking. He receives a call about some possible evidence. Bo and Roman leave.

Roman and Bo later return, unable to find anything to help incriminate either John or Paul. An officer brings Paul’s suitcase into the office. Morgan arrives wondering if Roman had any leads on her father. She is startled to see her father’s suitcase and demands to know why they have it. Roman says they can’t discuss it while the investigation is still pending. “John Black is responsible. He’s the man that you’re after!” she insists. Roman implores her to go home and get some sleep. After Morgan leaves, Roman shares his suspicion that Paul’s not the man whom Morgan thinks he is. Bo and Roman later search through the contents of Paul’s suitcase when Bo comes across a letter addressed to Morgan.

Stephanie is at Bo and Hope’s house with Chelsea, who quietly implores her to use “library voices” since Hope and Ciara are sleeping. Chelsea assumes that a preoccupied Steph is worried about Max and asks what’s going on with him. Steph refers to herself as the world’s worst friend and asks how her date went with Daniel. Chelsea smiles as Steph sits her down and eagerly asks for details. She shares how sweet, funny, and incredibly smart Daniel is. “And he’s really, really hot,” pants Steph. Chelsea gushes how Daniel is down to earth and humble. Steph notes that Chelsea’s eating even though Daniel took her to Chez Rouge. Chelsea refers to it as first date jitters. Steph quickly gives Chelsea pointers on dating before Chelsea reminds her that Daniel’s not an immature frat boy. “Dr. and Mrs. Daniel Jonas,” teases Stephanie.

Chelsea changes the topic back to Max. Steph reveals that Max’s biological father is back in town and he’s meeting up with his dad now. Chelsea is incredulous to hear that Dean Robbins is Max’s biological father. She questions what happened to Max’s mom. Steph reveals that she died a long time ago. She wishes Max would let her help him. Chelsea advises Steph to give Max some space so he can have time to process, but Steph doesn’t think it’s a good idea since Max has been so angry lately. She’s hoping Bo and Hope can help.

Chelsea later answers the door to Morgan and Stephanie leaves. She comforts Morgan, who worries that things aren’t looking good for her father. Morgan asks Chelsea if she doesn’t mind her staying over. Chelsea says it’s okay as long as she doesn’t touch Hope’s tomato juice, since she’s on a weird organic health kick right now. She goes over a list of possible activities for them to do, but Morgan proceeds to go to bed. Chelsea tries to assure her friend that Bo will find her father. “That’s what I’m afraid of,” responds a distressed Morgan before she heads upstairs.

Max is cleaning up at the pub when Trent knocks on the door after hours. A less than cordial Max asks his father why he didn’t show up earlier like he was supposed to. Trent points out that he’s there now. He offers to help Max, but Max refuses. Trent shares how he worked in a restaurant as a busboy the summer before he went off to college. Max states that he’s just trying to make ends meet. Trent wants to make amends with Max. Max mops the floor as Trent insists he’s not that bad of a guy. “You abandoned me, and you never came back!” rehashes Max. Trent claims he did what he thought was best for Max. “You were a coward! And you still are!” counters an angry Max. He chastises Trent for taking the easy way out and running away. Trent claims he came back to Salem all those years ago because he wanted Max with him. He recalls how the pub was still a fish market and how Max sat with Grandpa Shawn and had paper, crayons, and cars. He came to the realization that he couldn’t give Max the kind of life that the Bradys did, since he was traveling all the time and trying to build a career for himself. He brings up how he heard Max was racing cars and touring and couldn’t figure out why Max gave it up. Max takes it as a put down and asserts that what he does at the pub is good enough for him, as it was for Shawn Brady.

Trent has the audacity to ask Max to keep their relationship a secret. Max is incredulous by this. Trent claims that’s what he thought Max wanted. Max reveals that a few people already know and continues to throw more angry words at his father. He urges his father to pack up and hit the road. Trent reminds him that they could’ve settled it yesterday, but Max affirms that money’s not all that important to him. He speculates that Trent’s never really been happy and doesn’t know what it’s like. “Happiness means having people who love you and care about you,” he declares. “My son the philosopher,” jeers Trent.
