The Piggyback Technique

By , About.com Guide

An intoxicated Chelsea is rushed back to the hospital, where Daniel asks if she’s taken anything else besides alcohol. Chelsea is incoherent and oblivious as to what’s going on. Daniel orders an IV on Chelsea in order to detox her system.

Lexie enters Bo’s room and announces to Hope, Caroline, and Victor that it’s time to get Bo ready for surgery. Bo weakly refuses to put his daughter through the risk. Hope begs him to reconsider, insisting that Chelsea’s as every bit as stubborn as her father. Kayla enters and reveals that Chelsea’s downstairs. Hope theorizes that it’s God’s way of telling him to go through with it. She encourages Bo to at least talk to Chelsea. He agrees, but remains firm in his position. Lexie proceeds to give him something for the pain as Hope coaxes him to relax. She gives a brief explanation of the surgical procedure to Hope. Kayla refers to it as a “piggyback technique.” Hope looks at Bo and asks if Lexie put him out. She says she upped his dosage to help with the pain. Hope hugs and thanks her. Lexie speculates that Bo’s odds are much better than if they don’t do anything, but for right now they need to put their trust in Daniel and his skills.

Lexie later insists that Bo has to have this surgery and refers to him as “ridiculously stubborn.” Hope states that Bo’s afraid for his daughter’s life, which one can’t blame him for. Lexie and Kayla try to convince Hope that Chelsea would do anything to save Bo’s life and never would’ve agreed to be tested if she didn’t want to help. Hope notes that Bo didn’t sign the consent forms. Lexie confirms this, but says Hope can sign them since Bo’s unconscious. “If you don’t sign them, he’s going to die,” warns Lexie. A conflicted Hope agrees to sign away.

Kayla goes outside the room, where Caroline notes that she ran by them earlier as if they had the plague. Victor questions if there’s any news on Chelsea. Caroline is relieved when Kayla reveals that Chelsea’s downstairs and that Hope has signed the consent forms for an unconscious Bo.

In Chelsea’s room, she claims she’s fine and just needs to sleep it off. Daniel warns her that they don’t have that luxury. Shawn informs Chelsea that she’s a match and can save their dad. “That’s stupendous!” exclaims Chelsea. An agitated Daniel refers to her actions as stupid. Shawn wonders if Daniel can do something to sober her up. Daniel insists that getting Chelsea sober is going to take more than two cups of coffee and a swirl around the hospital to get it to a level to where they can operate. Chelsea cries how she didn’t know they would need her, since she thought her dad’s condition was hopeless. Daniel berates her for her actions when Kate arrives. Kate tells him to knock it off, since yelling at her isn’t going to help. “Neither does an inebriated donor,” counters Daniel.

Chelsea later moans how horrible she feels. Daniel yells how Bo’s going to die because of her. Shawn tells him it’s enough, but Daniel continues to lay into her. Kate intends to talk to the chief of staff about his behavior, but he dares her to go ahead as she and Shawn storm out. “You shouldn’t be crying like a little baby. You should be raging!” chastises Daniel. “I am mad!” she shouts several times as Daniel implores her to yell so the whole hospital can hear her. As Daniel leaves her room, Shawn lays into Daniel and warns him not to yell at his sister like that again. He fiercely defends Chelsea and predicts that she never would’ve taken a drink if she suspected in a million years that she was a match. Daniel insists that he needs to keep Chelsea’s heart pumping faster to keep pushing those IV fluids running through her body in order to reduce her alcohol level. Now that Chelsea’s angry, her heart is pumping faster. Thus, they have a chance. Shawn reveals to Daniel that Chelsea’s been through a lot, including losing her adoptive parents, accidentally killing Zack, feeling partially responsible for Ford, then losing Grandpa Shawn. Daniel apologizes, but insists that he’s just trying to get her on the O.R. table as quickly as he can.

Daniel re-enters Chelsea’s room and notes that she’s not screaming anymore. A weary Chelsea wonders what the point is, since her dad will probably die anyway. Daniel states his understanding that she’s been through a lot, but admits that he was trying to make her mad so the IV fluid can go through her body as quickly as possible. Chelsea apologizes for drinking so much and admits that she feels a bit more sober. Daniel questions if there’s anything else she can think of that might raise her heart rate.

Daniel tells Chelsea about his talk with Shawn and admits that he probably would’ve taken another route with her if had he known about her past. Chelsea believes that he did what he had to do and thanks him. Daniel cautions her not to thank him yet and advises her to let the IV do it’s work. Chelsea apologizes for her stupidity, but Daniel tells her not to say that again just as Kate re-enters. Kate follows him out of the room and tries to slug him, but Daniel grabs her arm before she has the chance. She warns him not to ever talk that way to Chelsea again and states that her granddaughter’s been through hell. “I’m thinking you’re one smug, vulgar son of a bitch,” scoffs Kate. Shawn defends Daniel and states that he was just trying to get her heart rate up so the IV fluids would pump through her system faster. He tells Kate that he informed Daniel of everything Chelsea’s been through, which made him feel terrible. A guilty Kate goes in to see Chelsea and comforts her.

Belle enters Bo’s room and asks to speak to everyone in the waiting room. Outside Bo’s room, Belle reveals to everyone that Chelsea’s drunk. Lexie states that they can’t operate until Chelsea’s BAC is down to .02 percent. She insists to Kayla that the other scheduled surgeries will have to be pushed back or moved. Kayla offers to get right on it. Victor suggests to Caroline that sitting around there won’t do them any good. Caroline wonders what he proposes they do, but he doesn’t know. “What? The great Victor Kiriaks doesn’t know?” jokes Caroline.
