A Formidable Opponent

By , About.com Guide

In Bo’s room, Lexie tells Hope that they’re ready to get Bo prepped and down to surgery. Kayla assures Hope that Bo’s blood work came back fine and all she has to do is give him an immunosuppressant so his body won’t reject Chelsea’s pancreas. Lexie assures Hope that she’ll keep a close eye on Chelsea and reiterates that she’ll be assisting Dr. Taylor.

In the lobby, John questions Marlena if the family seems cursed. Marlena believes the family has had a lot of heartbreak lately. “I guess they didn’t inherit the luck of the Irish,” jokes John. Marlena affirms that they are all blessed with a family who loves and adores each other, and John’s a part of it.

Elsewhere, Belle approaches Shawn and Philip and informs them that Bo’s being prepped for surgery. Philip tries to assure a worried Shawn that nobody is better than Dr. Jonas. Shawn expresses wishes that he would’ve been a match for the transplant so he felt like he was helping more. Belle assures Shawn that Bo knows he loves him and brings up the plans which Shawn told Bo about. “What plans?" questions Philip as Belle’s mouth practically drops open. Belle covers, then apologizes to Shawn for lying to Philip after he walks off. Shawn predicts that they may have to put their plans on hold depending on what happens with Bo. Belle assures him that it doesn’t matter where they are, as long as they’re together. Marlena asks how Shawn's holding up. He’s just anxious for them to get started. John doesn’t know how Doc can work in the hospital, since the atmosphere is so tense. He brings up how Belle wants to get into nursing, which Belle confirms. John notes that she’s a “ball of sunshine” which must be from Marlena. “I also got it from you, when you didn’t used to be so pessimistic,” she states. John refers to himself as a realist.

Max and Stephanie approach Victor and Caroline. Caroline reminds a worried Max that Bo and Chelsea come from a family of fighters, so they can beat the odds. Roman and Steve join Max and Steph. Steph is still in disbelief that Chelsea is giving up a part of her pancreas. Steve claims it’s not so bad, recalling how he gave up a kidney for Uncle Jack and now he’s fine. “You had two kidneys. Chelsea only has one pancreas,” Steph points out. “I could’ve sworn we had two of those things,” jokes Steve.

Chelsea chats with Billie on the phone, who apparently can’t fly there to be with Chelsea because of the weather. She assures Billie that Kate will call and give her an update, then tells her mom that she loves her. After Chelsea hangs up, she expresses how much it means that Kate’s there with her. She proceeds to fill her paperwork out. Kate's glad that Bo’s getting the transplant, but wishes it wasn’t coming from Chelsea. Chelsea wants to do this and feels as though she needs to repay her dad. Kate worries for Chelsea, but Chelsea tries to assure her that she’ll be fine. Daniel enters and questions if she’s sure she wants to go through with the procedure. Chelsea re-affirms that she wants to be her dad’s donor and reiterates how much she loves Bo. She signs the form and hands them to a Daniel, who assures her that he’ll do his best. An emotional Kate tells her granddaughter how proud of her she is and how her courage is amazing. “Really? Because I’m as scared as hell right now,” admits Chelsea.

Daniel goes over operating instructions with Dr. Taylor, Kayla, and Lexie. He urges them not to make any mistakes before the team heads out ready to get to work.

Back in Bo’s room, Victor encourages his son to be strong. “Shawn and Isabella will be looking down on you,” he assures. Caroline tells him they will pray for him and Chelsea until the operation is complete. Bo is then wheeled out of his room, where his family and friends wish him the best. “Hang tough,” says John.

Nick enters Chelsea’s room and apologizes for not being there sooner. He presents Chelsea with a used teddy bear named “Teddy,” a present which his mom gave him at age 10 when he had his appendix removed. Nick worries about losing Chelsea, but she assures him that she’s happy to be the match for Bo. The nurses enter ready to take her to the OR. Kate hugs her and tells her that she loves her. Nick and Chelsea exchange “I love yous.” Max and Step wish her luck.

Back in Bo’s room, Lexie announces that Bo’s ready for the big event. Hope tells them to take good care of her husband and her stepdaughter. She holds Bo’s hands and affirms that she and his whole family need him, so he needs to fight.

As Chelsea enters the lobby, Hope expresses her gratitude to Chelsea and how proud of her she is. “I would do anything for my dad,” declares Chelsea. Hope cries and professes to love Chelsea. Chelsea encounters her dad on the way to the OR and tells him that she can yell at her when he gets home. She affirms that they are a team and tells him to take good care of her pancreas. “I love you” she cries before they are wheeled to their respective operating rooms.

In the OR, an anesthesiologist named Kevin introduces himself to Chelsea and refers to her as an incredible daughter. He tells her that he’s going to inject an anesthetic into her IV, which will put her to sleep. Lexie later tells Dr. Taylor that Chelsea’s ready. As the operation is underway, Dr. Taylor notes that Chelsea’s bleeding a bit more than she should, but Lexie doubts that it’s much of a problem yet.

In Bo’s OR, Daniel tells the assisting staff that they won’t cut open Bo until they know that Chelsea’s pancreas is viable for transplant.

Meanwhile, John stands alone as Steve, Max, Stephanie, and Nick pass the time by playing cards. “Who taught you babies to play anyway?” jests Steve. Max reminds Steve that he taught him. Steph brings up Vegas and recalls how Nick won all that money at blackjack. Nick remembers Chelsea’s expression when he won. Steph thinks they should all go back sometime when Chelsea recovers. Steve jokingly asks if he can go, but Steph says no since he’ll be too busy changing diapers. Nick requests to sit out the next round since he can’t concentrate. Steph encourages him to keep playing, since they all need the distraction.
