Everyone is reeling over Marlena's confession to killing Roman. Sami, horrified and hysterical, demands to know why her mother killed her father. Marlena stuns the room when she announces that she killed Roman because she loved him and she hated that he married Kate - if she couldn't have him, no one could. Kate is horrified and John is gut-punched.

Nicole is a nervous wreck as Bo questions Marlena about Victor's murder. Marlena, still under the influence of the truth serum, says she didn't kill Victor. Bo never thought she did... He always believed the prime suspect was Nicole. Brady reminds him that Nicole had an alibi for Victor's murder: she was with him. Bo believes Nicole had an accomplice and thinks Marlena may know more...

Bo presses Marlena to recall Victor's killer, but she can't. Marlena does have a gauzy memory of Nicole. Brady thinks it makes sense that Marlena is seeing Nicole because she's guilty. Brady points out that ever since the serial murders began, everyone has been pointing fingers at Nicole. He says it's no wonder that Marlena thinks that she's guilty. Bo tells Nicole he's not about to give up.

Nicole is sealing the deal for Crystal to kill Marlena when Brady and John show up, hoping to see Marlena. Nicole nearly freaks when it looks like Brady's seen her but instead he's seen his old friend, Trish, who's now the assistant warden at the jail. Crystal tells Nicole she'll take care of Marlena and moves out.

Marlena is cold and alone in her jail cell. Little does she know her new "friend" Crystal is hatching a plot to get her killed. Crystal seduces a guard and manages to swipe his keys and his gun. Later, she rouses the lovely Marlena and tells her there is a gas leak. Marlena surprises Crystal and says she's going to stay in her cell.

It looks very bad for Marlena as Crystal bashes her over the head with a gun and pushes her unconscious body out on the roof of the jail. Crystal then tosses the cleaned-off gun out beside her. Crystal jams the door shut and sounds the alarm making it look as if Marlena escaped. Marlena wakes up, disoriented, and doesn't even know she has a gun.

Marlena gets up after a very close call on the jail rooftop. Desperate to save herself, she is unaware there is a gun in her hand. The guards in the prison tower radio Bo to tell him the escaped serial killer is about to fire her weapon and Bo affirms his order to shoot to kill. John races in and grabs Bo by the throat. He won't let Bo kill Marlena!

Marlena is shot on the jail rooftop. Her seemingly lifeless body falls into John's arms just as Bo calls off the sharpshooter; Hope calls for an ambulance. John works feverishly to save his beloved Doc and Lexie arrives to give medical assistance. Marlena revives but she tells them it's no use she's dying.

John carries Marlena's corpse through the streets of Salem. Hope begs John to let them take Marlena's body to the morgue but protective John won't let them touch her. John carries her off to the church and sets up an impromptu wake for Marlena, surrounding her dead body with flowers and candles. Bo and Hope watch from a distance and Hope calls Sami and Belle.

At the church Sami is filled with a mix of grief and rage at John, Bo and Kate She blames them for her mother's death. Lucas tries unsuccessfully to calm her down. Philip is with Belle and John as they grieve and pray for Marlena's soul. Bo and Hope call the mortician, who arrives to take Marlena's body.

Celeste receives a shock as she comes face to face with Marlena's talking corpse. Celeste prays for Marlena's soul to find salvation but Marlena will not leave. Celeste picks up on the fact that another death is expected and Celeste reminds Marlena that she's dead - she can in no way physically hurt anyone ever again. Marlena tells Celeste that the evil has returned and the evil has a plan.

Marlena's body is waiting to embalmed in the mortuary. John and Celeste are unaware, as Marlena's fingers start to move. The mortician re-enters as it is time for him to prepare the body. John insists on saying a final, emotional farewell to Doc; he kisses Marlena goodbye. As John and Celeste go to leave, Celeste apologizes for making John think Marlena could still be alive.

Roman and Abe wonder how she will deal with the rest of the news. When Marlena revives, Abe convinces her that she did not kill him.
