EJ's Citizenship Explained

By Gwen Morett, About.com

EJ and Sami arrive at the police station for the immigration hearing, where they encounter Roman. Sami asks where Mr. Burke is. Roman reveals that the agent is inside using his office, since Mr. Burke wanted to question him as well. He relays how he told Mr. Burke that Sami and EJ were both very devoted to their family and he would personally and professionally vouge for EJ. EJ and Sami thank him. John and Marlena arrive, where John is eager to proceed without delay. Sami gets an unwelcome surprise when Nicole shows up at the hearing. “What the hell are you doing here?” she asks her rival. “I’m here to testify about your unholy matrimony,” declares Nicole. Sami demands for her dad to kick her out or arrest her. Nicole questions why EJ needs help, recalling how he was born in Salem on American soil, then moved to England a few months later. She questions if he has dual citizenship. EJ explains how his mother (Susan Banks) tried to pass him off as another woman’s child (Kristen Blake). Thus, his original birth certificate was null and void. He further explains that when Susan and Edmund moved him to the UK they were frightened and registered him as Edmund’s son, so he became a UK citizen and any roots he had in the US disappeared for his own protection. Nicole admits she could use a drink after that confusing back story. Mr. Burke emerges and requests to begin with John Black. Sami doesn’t feel too confident about John’s testimony.

Sami later nervously paces the floor and wonders what’s taking so long. Nicole chomps on her bagel and pushes Sami’s buttons by mentioning that John’s giving Mr. Burke an awful earful about her. Marlena implores Sami to stay calm. Nicole and Sami briefly argue before Marlena and Roman urge them to settle down, since the last thing Sami needs is for Mr. Burke to see her fighting with a character witness. Marlena wishes she knew what John was saying inside.

Meanwhile, Mr. Burke asks John to explain why Sami and EJ are living with him. “Because they’re my family," he answers. John admits that he doesn’t remember Sami or EJ, but has been able to observe them with the objectivity of an outsider. Mr. Burke asks John if they love each other. “To be sure,” replies John, who doesn’t believe they realize just how much in love they really are. After John’s questioning, he tells Sami that he simply told the truth. Sami wonders which version. “I’m having a hard time separating the two,” answers John.

EJ thanks Nicole for coming down to the station to testify. Nicole implies that maybe her participation will help expedite her divorce. EJ says divorces from Victor take time. “Deportation from the good old US of A, not so much,” implies Nicole. EJ warns her to make sure she doesn’t say anything that would hurt his wife or mess up his chances to stay in the country. After Nicole walks off, Sami thanks him for sticking up for her, although she doesn’t know if it’s enough to help.

After a laughing Nicole emerges from Roman's office with Mr. Burke, he thanks her for her “cooperation and insight.” Nicole is the only one who has been able to make the stuffy agent smile thus far. He kisses her hand. Nicole makes a crack about Johnny having a nice time visiting his father in London, which infuriates Sami. Sami grabs her and has to be pulled off her rival by Roman. Mr. Burke announces that he’s ready for Sami. EJ requests to speak to Mr. Burke with Sami, which the agent complies with.

Mr. Burke later questions Sami and EJ. Sami recalls the first time she met EJ he was wrapped up in a towel. EJ and Sami claim they had their rough patches, but always came back to each other. “But this man’s family has tried to destroy your family for years,” Mr. Burke points out. Sami confirms this, but says it’s all in the past. Mr. Burke asks Sami if she loves her husband. “I do,” she says as she looks at EJ. EJ then explains how his life completely changed when he met Sami and insists that it’s not about a visa, but it’s about his wife and son. He begs Mr. Burke to give him his family, as he doesn’t have any other. Mr. Burke thanks him and says he’ll review his notes before making his recommendation. Sami assures EJ that he did great, and vice versa. Marlena asks Sami and EJ how it went. Sami admits she doesn’t know, since the agent gave them no indication whatsoever. Nicole tells her not to hold her breath, rehashing how attacking her didn’t help her case. “You really are your own worse enemy,” surmises Nicole. Sami begins to cry and wonders what if Nicole’s right. EJ takes her in his arms and comforts her.

Max serves Philip a beer at the Brady Pub bar, where Philip mentions that he hasn’t seen Max at the docks lately. Max claims his hours have been crazy, but he’s almost done with his community service and intends to look for a “real third job” to make ends meet. Philip then implies that he has a way for Max to make some extra cash. “You can keep an eye out on the docks, and help me nail John Black,” suggests Philip. Max refuses to spy on John Black and rehashes how Phil tried bringing Morgan’s father down. Morgan is in the background looking nonetheless too pleased at Philip. She confronts Philip about trying to get Max to spy for him. She tells him to leave her friends out of his dirty Kiriakis tricks. Philip agrees, only if she lets him buy her a drink. Morgan says no, but challenges him to a game of darts. She throws a dart and rips Philip’s shirt in the process. “Good thing you can afford another one,” she remarks. Morgan tells him to take it as a warning. “I’m very intimidated,” quips Philip.

Kate comes to the Brady house to see Chelsea and comforts her over her latest infertility ordeal. Chelsea confides in Kate and admits she got her feelings hurt by Daniel when he took himself off her case, then he told her that another doctor would oversee her post-op care. Kate tries to assure her that it’s absolutely standard. Chelsea is confused as to why Daniel would dump her. Kate assumes that Chelsea’s hoping she and Daniel can be more than just friends. Their conversation is interrupted by a knock at the door, which Kate answers to Nick.
