Writers' Strike FAQ's

By , About.com Guide

What is the Writers’ Strike all about?
Writers want fair compensation for their work redistributed on the Internet, sold on iTunes, or sold on DVD’s. When writers in the entertainment industry aren’t currently active in writing for their shows, they mainly rely on residuals, which are royalty fees when the show is aired in rerun sequences.

Who are the two sides in the Writers’ Strike?
The Writers Guild of America (WGA) and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP).

What have been the first shows to be impacted by the Writers’ Strike?
The late night talk-shows such as “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” and “The Late Show with David Letterman” have been among the first shows impacted by the strike. These talk shows use writers for their opening monologues. Both hosts of these shows have backed the WGA and have stopped production on their shows, airing reruns of older shows.

What shows have been among the least impacted by the Writers’ Strike?
Reality shows have been the least impacted, since these shows require no scripts and are relatively inexpensive to produce.

What happened to soaps during the last strike back in 1988?
Non-union “scribes” were brought in to write for soaps during the 22-week strike and the shows survived, but the strike cost the overall entertainment industry more than $500 million.

How many episodes of “Days of Our Lives” have been written?
Thus far, DAYS has enough episodes written to air through January of 2008.

What will happen if “Days of Our Lives” runs out of episodes during the Writers’ Strike?
DAYS will continue production regardless of how long the strike goes on, either by scab or replacement writers.

What is financial-core status?
Financial-core, or "fi-core" status is a move in which writers give up their membership in the WGA and no longer have a stake in voting, but they are still able to work and collect benefits. Union members who opt for this status cannot be disciplined by the WGA, but can be subjected to public humiliation.

What is a scab?
This is the term used to describe any WGA member who is caught working during the strike. The consequences for this action can include expulsion from the WGA, fines, and censure.

When were the DAYS writers taken off the credits at the end of the show?
The Friday, January 25, 2008 episode was the first show in which not one of the DAYS writers were listed, including Hogan Sheffer and Meg Kelly.

Who is writing for "Days of Our Lives" during the strike?
According to a New York Daily News article by Soap Opera Weekly Editor Carolyn Hinsey, former One Life to Live Head Writer Dena Higley is writing for the show. Other replacement writers are ghost writing the show anonymously.
