Philip demands a time line of her whereabouts last night, otherwise he’ll walk. Kate recounts how she and Lucas were mending their relationship, then EJ mentioned something to Lucas which made him angrier than he’s ever been at her before. So, she went to the DiMera mansion intending to shoot EJ, but couldn’t go through with it. She admits she slipped into the church unnoticed until the ceremony began. She confesses that she took out her gun when Sami and EJ were exchanging vows, but then realized she didn’t know which one she hated more. So when she closed her eyes to regain composure, the gun went off accidentally, but she heard two other shots. As a result, EJ was hit, so she put her gun in her pocket and made a beeline out of the church as quickly as she could. “And that’s why there’s powder residual on the gun,” she concludes. She insists she didn’t shoot EJ, because the last person she was aiming for was Sami. She claims that when her gun went off, it was pointed in the air, so it couldn’t have possibly hit EJ. Philip warns her that she could be charged with attempted murder if the cops find the bullet and match it to the gun. Kate theorizes that if she perhaps got rid of EJ, then Lucas could marry Sami and be happy. Thus, he'd forgive her. He agrees to take care of the gun, but affirms that they never had the conversation. “How do I know that you won’t turn against me like your brother?” she asks. Philip wishes her luck with her alibi before he proceeds to leave. Kate is convinced that Stefano will kill her if the cops link her to EJ’s shooting. He reluctantly agrees to take care of the gun. She hugs him and thanks him for his help.
Sami is at home with Lucas, who apologizes for everything she’s going through and wishes he could’ve been there with her. Sami warns him that if EJ dies, Stefano will come after them. Lucas claims they’ll deal with it by being a family and by being together. She admits that she couldn’t get through the whole mess without him. He questions why she came home. “Because I need you. Because I love you so much and I need your love and your arms around me,” she professes. She says Stefano wants her to go back to the hospital by EJ’s side. “To he!! with what he wants,” responds Lucas, who claims that if EJ dies, then it’s one less psycho in the world to worry about. “Then we’re all gonna die, because Stefano will make sure of it,” she warns. Lucas believes EJ got exactly what he deserved, since he blackmailed Sami into the wedding and threatened to take their son. He previews that if Stefano tries to come after them, he’ll get exactly what EJ got.
Sami expresses how frightened she was at the church after EJ was shot and how she initially thought he was dead. “He was just trying to help me end the violence,” laments Sami. Lucas implores her not to turn EJ into a saint just because he was shot. She warns him that if EJ doesn’t pull through, then Stefano will kill everyone they love. “If Stefano is still trying to come after us, I hope he dies. I hope he kneels right next to EJ,” sneers Lucas. Sami cautions him against talking that way, since the cops already suspect him. He recounts how he already told Bo how he was there all night with the twins, but Sami appears skeptical of this claim. He says it’s okay if she wants to ask him the grand question. “I don’t have to, because I know you love me,” she says as she hugs him.
Sami proceeds to call the hospital as Lucas asks her to take EJ’s ring off. She predicts that if she arrives at the hospital without it, Stefano will think she’s backing out. Lucas implores her to get a legal annulment so they can get married again. “Not until this is over,” she affirms. Sami gravely reveals that EJ wasn’t the only target, and one of the bullets was meant for her. Lucas refers to her theory as crazy, since she gave Stefano exactly what he wanted and no-one in her family would ever hurt her. He advises her to steer clear of the hospital, since whoever shot EJ will probably go back to finish the job. Sami insists that Stefano will make good on his threats if she doesn’t return to the hospital. She then answers the phone to Stefano, who informs her that EJ just woke up and is asking for her. “For your family’s sake, I hope you do the right thing,” he forewarns her before he hangs up. Sami insists she needs to go. Lucas urges her to put her foot down, since Stefano’s going to keep making threats. “I can’t,” she whispers. Lucas then asks if she wants a life with him and the kids or EJ.
Sami later kneels beside the crib and professes to love her babies. She assures Lucas she’ll always come back to him, then embraces him. He asks her to keep his ring with her. She answers him with a passionate kiss and asks him to tell the twins that she loves them. “I am doing this to save our family,” she affirms before she walks out.
Stefano tells EJ how Sami was by his side when he was taken into surgery. EJ claims he doesn’t remember and wonders when Sami’s coming back. Stefano painfully reveals EJ’s paralysis to him and how the bullet is lodged in his spinal cord. A despondent EJ wonders if he’ll ever be able to walk again. Stefano urges him not to give up hope. EJ requests to be alone.
Sami later arrives at the hospital and encounters Stefano, who claims that EJ needs his wife by his side. Sami then has a flashback to her wedding with Lucas when they were happily exchanging their vows. “I’ll expect your complete devotion,” states Stefano. “And I expect you to end the violence,” requests Sami. Stefano balks at this idea after her family supposedly gunned down EJ. Sami reminds Stefano that she stuck to her end of the bargain. Stefano reveals that EJ’s paralyzed and may never walk again. “So our truce is as fragile as your infant children, Samantha,” scoffs Stefano.
Back at Lucas’s apartment, he gazes at a wedding picture of him and Sami, then kneels beside the babies. Meanwhile, Sami slowly enters EJ’s hospital room.
