A hesitant Sami enters EJ’s room and asks how he’s feeling. A bitter EJ shares the grave news that he’s paralyzed. Sami suggests it may not be permanent. EJ tells her not to pretend that she cares. Sami admits how terrified she was by the shooting and insists she wants to help. EJ tells her to leave, but she refuses. She claims she’s sorry for the pain he’s going through. “That’s rich, coming from somebody who promised to make my life miserable,” he scoffs. Sami doesn’t denying mentioning this, but affirms that she didn’t mean for him to get shot. EJ tells her to get out. Sami reveals that she was with him the whole time after he got shot and even sat with Stefano awaiting his prognosis because she thought he might need her. “I don’t want your pity,” says a jaded EJ. “Good, because that’s not what I’m offering,” she clarifies. EJ tells her not to worry about looking after a cripple the rest of her life. He encourages her to go be with Lucas. “What about the vendetta?” she shrugs. EJ offers to talk to his father about ending things. “Look at me Samantha. I have nothing to offer you,” he desponds. Sami notes how he talks as though his life is over. She claims it’s too soon for him to be processing this. He reiterates his request for her to go home and be with Lucas and professes that he loves her too much to tie her down. Sami tries to discourage him from making decisions about the rest of his life right now. He insists he only wants her to be happy. “You want me to be happy? You stop feeling sorry for yourself!” she urges.
Sami notes that it’s not like him to give up without trying. EJ raises up in bed and pounds on his legs, yelling how he is trying. “But EJ, you’re alive,” she points out. She admits she was initially attracted to his charm and charisma, not his legs. She recalls the night on the pier when he made her feel special, before she knew he was a DiMera. “EJ, don’t you dare give up,” she urges. “I have nothing left to live for. Nothing,” a sullen EJ whispers. She displays a photo of their son and reminds him otherwise. “Look at your son. He’s counting on you,” she insists. EJ claims he can’t do things like play ball or help his son ride a bike like Lucas can. He yells at her to get out, while Sami urges him to fight. She finally complies to his request for the time being, leaving the photo behind.
Lucas summons Kate to his apartment and demands his gun back. An unsettled Kate claims she got rid of it and wonders why he wants it. “Because I don’t want the police to find it and trace it back to me. That’s why!” he yells. Kate assumes that he thinks she shot EJ, which she denies. He demands for her to reveal what she did with the gun, otherwise he’ll tell Bo she had a gun when EJ was shot. She fesses up that she gave it to Philip and spills how she threatened EJ and Stefano earlier. He questions if she shot EJ and reveals how one of the shots nearly hit Sami. Kate is incredulous that Lucas would suspect her of trying to shoot Sami. She admits she hates Sami and wasn’t disappointed when he divorced Sami, but refuses to be accused of trying to shoot her. She tries to leave, but Lucas asserts that she’s not going anywhere. “I want you to look me in the eye and tell me you didn’t try to shoot Sami at the church,” he urges. She recites that she didn’t try to shoot Sami. He demands for her to call Philip and retrieve the gun back from him. Kate speculates that Phil’s already disposed of it.. Lucas insists it’s only a matter of time before the cops track him down and discover that he bought two guns the night EJ was shot. Kate asks if he shot EJ and promises not to judge him if that’s the case. He tells her to get out, but she insists she can help him if he’s the culprit. Lucas rehashes how she covered up Franco Kelly’s murder and admits he’ll live with that regret until the day he dies. Kate admits she’d do it again in a New York minute to protect him. He tells her to forget it.
Kate offers to give up everything she has if Lucas shot EJ. Lucas neither confirms nor denies shooting EJ, but insists they need to take a few precautions, such as not being seen together. Sami arrives home and wonders what’s going on. Kate simply says nothing before leaving. Lucas claims to Sami that it’s just his mom being his mom and notes how tired she looks. He tells Sami she can’t keep bouncing back and forth to the hospital, since the twins need their mom. Sami says she won’t be going back and forth anymore. Lucas hugs her in relief. Sami then reveals that EJ’s dying. “After everything he’s done to your family, what do you care?” asks Lucas. Sami predicts that if EJ dies, their family will be in even more danger. “By the way, he is a human being,” affirms Sami. Lucas believes otherwise and doesn’t exhibit a whole lot of sympathy for his enemy. Sami reveals how EJ encouraged her to go back home to Lucas, even after showing him a picture of Johnny. “Good. That’s what I wanna hear,” smiles Lucas. Sami worries how Stefano will hold them responsible if EJ dies. Lucas believes Stefano will hold them responsible no matter what happens. He proposes they send EJ a thank-you note and move on, but Sami predicts that Stefano will rip Johnny away from them and raise him as a DiMera.
Lucas later rubs Sami’s shoulders and coaxes her to get some sleep. She lies down on the couch and laughs as Lucas acts goofy and covers her up. He hears one of the babies crying and goes into the bedroom to check on the twins. Colleen’s ghost appears before Sami and urges her to give EJ the will to live.
In the bedroom, Lucas holds his daughter and looks down at the boy, referring to him as his handsome son.
Stefano enters EJ’s room and confronts him about turning Sami away. He urges EJ to stop sulking and act like a DiMera, noting how the family has never indulged in self-pity. EJ has a brief memory of dancing with Sami when they were friends. EJ’s monitors start beeping as EJ goes into convulsions. The hospital staff rushes into his room as Stefano panics for his son’s life.
