Emotional Manipulation

From , former About.com Guide

Philip later gets off the phone with Maggie, who was asking about Nick and Melanie. Steph remarks how Nick and Melanie’s names together sound like Thumper and Cruella De Vil. Philip doesn’t believe Nick can deal with someone like Melanie. Steph admits she’s worried about Nick, referring to him as nice and gullible. They head over to Maggie’s together.

Airport Hotel

Nick fixes drinks for him and Melanie and suggests taking a hot bath and getting ready for bed. Melanie declines a drink, but Nick insists that it’s for a special occasion. He stabs the ice in the bucket with an ice pick and Melanie flashes back to the night Trent was murdered, remembering that Nick was the one who stabbed her father in the back. Nick hands her a drink and notes that she looks as though she’s seen a ghost. Melanie keeps mum about what she knows. Nick pops a pill and Melanie questions if he should mix it with alcohol. “What? You going to be the nagging wife?” he jokes. An unsettled Melanie stammers and claims it’s going a little fast and suggests that they just go back home, but Nick insists otherwise.

A nervous Melanie sits with Nick as he drinks. She gets up and claims she doesn’t feel well and proceeds to go for a walk. Nick closes the door and says he can’t let her do that. He warns Melanie that the cops could be looking for them. Melanie tries to convince him to move the car, but Nick says it’s already been taken care of. Melanie offers to take him up on that bath and needs her purse. Nick stops her and tells her to give him her phone before she heads into the bathroom. He intends to check her messages to see if anyone’s trying to get ahold of her, then he’s going to disable it, since the phone is like a tracking device. He offers to buy her a new phone in Vegas as a wedding present.

Melanie is disheartened to hear that they’re not going back home. “What about my brother?” she questions. Nick states that Max isn’t as loyal as she may think he is. “I’m the one you can trust, alright. Your husband,” he affirms. He gets upset when he realizes that he scared her. A frightened Melanie pulls away and tells him not to touch her. “What did you just say to me?” he demands. He yells at her not to talk to him like that. She apologizes, claiming she feels ugly and dirty. He assures her she’s beautiful and refuses to allow her a bath. A woozy Nick then sits down and Melanie claims she’s worried about his shoulder, offering to fix him another drink and fetch him a pill. “I love you Melanie,” he professes, then kisses her. Melanie is unsettled as he continues to nuzzle her neck.

Cheatin’ Heart

Chelsea sits at the bar as Max sighs how he might not see Melanie again. Max admits that his sister had means, opportunity, and a motive. He believes that if Melanie’s guilty, Trent will be screwing up the rest of her life like he did the first eighteen years. Chelsea wonders why Nick would send Melanie a threatening letter if he’s in love with her. Max wonders if running wasn’t Melanie’s idea. Chelsea proceeds to call her dad.

Chelsea later reveals that she just got off the phone with six people and nobody has seen Nick in days. Max notes how it’s as if Nick’s world just shrunk down to Melanie. They briefly discuss Nick’s pills before Max recalls how he told his sister not to do anything to hurt Nick, then surmises that he has it all backwards.

Police Station

Bo instructs Officer Jenkins to bring Nick and Melanie in for questioning. Hope enters the office after getting off the phone with Chelsea, who mentioned that if Nick is in love with Melanie, sending her a threatening note is completely out of character. Bo theorizes that if Nick is obsessed with Melanie, he needs to make her scared, dependent, and isolate her. Hope doesn’t believe that Nick would ever do that, then realizes that his behavior is because of the painkillers, especially considering his mother’s history. Bo confirms that he put out an APB.

Bo later rubs Hope’s shoulders and encourages her to go home and get some rest, but she refuses. Hope brings up how Nick was at the cemetery and displays the note, then retrieves the autopsy report, which shows that the angle of the wound most likely consisted from someone who was over six feet tall. Hope deduces that Nick decided to solve the biggest problem of Melanie’s life.

Back at the Airport Hotel

Nick pulls away from Melanie and professes to love her, insisting that he wants to spend the rest of his life making her happy. He realizes that she doesn’t love him yet, but believes she could in time. She offers to take him up on that drink, then they’ll make a toast to their happiness. She gets up with a glass, then quivers as she touches the ice pick on the table, encouraging Nick to relax. She slips the ice pick in her pocket as she fixes a drink, then brings the drink to Nick and offers him another pill. Nick suggests a bachelor party instead, then kisses her. He then feels the ice pick in her pocket and demands to know what the hell she thinks she’s doing. Melanie begins to cry and rambles how it’s happening too fast. An angry Nick yells how she’s coming at her with an ice pick and warns her that it had better be good. Melanie then lunges at his injured shoulder and breaks a glass on him, then tries to escape. He grabs her and warns her that she just made a very big mistake. A struggle ensues and Melanie begs him to let go of her, accidentally stepping on Nick’s phone in the process. She lunges at him again and he grabs her after she retrieves the ice pick.

Back at Maggie’s House

A distressed Maggie leaves a message for Nick and asks him to call her or come home. She runs to the door in excitement when she assumes it’s Nick, but is deflated to see Philip and Stephanie instead. A distraught Maggie admits that she was hoping it was Nick at the door, then excuses herself. Stephanie hears her phone and is relieved to see that it’s Nick calling. Back at the hotel, Melanie screams at Nick to get off of her, but Nick yells how won’t let her leave. “What are you gonna do? Kill me? Like you killed my father?” she confronts.
