That's the Only Thing That Counts

By , About.com Guide

Behind the Pub

Bob manhandles Melanie after discovering that she’s stolen his wallet. She gives him back his wallet and yells at him to take his hands off of her. He warns her that he’s going to teach her a lesson first. He grabs her by the coat and taunts her before Philip fights him off. Bob calls Phil a punk and tells him to mind his own business. Philip yells at him to get out of there. “Your little bimbo friend in not worth defending,” states Bob. Philip grabs him and reiterates his demand.

Afterwards, Philip asks Melanie if she’s okay. Melanie questions how Philip found her. Phil admits he followed her. Melanie sarcastically thanks him for saving her life. Philip asks her if she’s crazy for playing pickpocket with a sleazy old man’s wallet. Melanie implores Philip to get his kicks some other way and quit coming to her rescue. Philip quips how she’s breaking his heart. “You’re an arrogant jerk, do you know that?” she notes. He agrees to never come to her rescue again or question her judgement. In fact, he suggests they never speak to each other again.

Melanie whines how sick she is of everyone blaming her for everything. She can’t figure out why everyone in town is looking at her like she’s the guilty one, pointing out how Nick’s the one who killed her father. He advises her to make better choices if she wants people to trust her. Melanie refers to it as no big deal that she ripped a guy off, insisting that she was desperate. “You wouldn’t give me a job, remember?” she reminds him. Philip assumes that she wants things handed to her and notes how all he hears self-pity. Melanie brings up how she used to con her dad into giving her extra cash. She chuckles and claims he doesn’t understand anything. “What? About you?” he assumes. “No. About you,” she clarifies. Melanie points out that he’s spoiled and has been pampered. Philip jeers how she has amazing insight and asks if she’s a psych major, then derides how she doesn’t have a college education. Melanie retorts how he has no character because he’s had it so easy. Philip continues to mock her before Melanie whines about having to grow up in the real world.

Maggie’s House

Melanie returns to her temporary residence. Maggie offers her something to eat, but Melanie says no thanks. Maggie notes how she seems distracted. Melanie asks Maggie if she meant what she said earlier about having a place to stay, or if Maggie just wants her gone. “What I want, and what I do for family are two different things,” states Maggie. Melanie begins to chat with Maggie, but she interrupts and doesn’t want to hear about Melanie’s troubles.

Melanie later counts her money and finds that she has a grand total of $13.22. Maggie arrives home with a couple of bags of groceries and hands her a note, which reveals that Philip called and offered her the job at Titan. Melanie is confused, since he turned her down before.

Brady Pub

Daniel and Kate arrive and encounter Lucas and Chloe, who reveal that they’re throwing her a surprise party. Lucas shares how he talked to Victor, who agreed to have a little party at his place. Kate refers to it all as very sweet. Lucas and Chloe tease Daniel how he’s not very good at keeping surprise parties a secret. Kate is ready to party and thanks Daniel for everything he’s done. They embrace.

Kiriakis Mansion

Victor meets up with Brady and embraces his grandson, expressing how wonderful it is to have him back. He asks how he’s finding Salem since he’s been back. Brady flashes back to breaking the devastating news to Nicole about losing her baby. “Honestly, it hasn’t been what I expected,” he muses. Victor shares how he has agreed to host a surprise party for Kate, who is doing much better now. He suggests that maybe another time for Brady to hang out would be better, since Lucas and Chloe are dating and Victor had no choice but to invite her. Brady tells Victor that he has spoken to Chloe, and they’ve moved on. “I see,” responds Victor. Brady quips how Victor seems overjoyed. Victor appears less than enthused that Brady has mended fences with Nicole and Chloe. “Those two women almost destroyed your life! I would raise hell before I saw that happen again!” rehashes Victor, who advises Brady to stay away from them. Victor refuses to follow Brady’s example and mend fences with Nicole, throwing it in his grandson’s face that he’s not a recovering drug addict trying to redeem himself. Brady proceeds to head inside. Victor reveals that he was never married to Nicole and she was cheating money out of him for years.

DiMera Mansion

E.J. carries Johnny into Nicole’s bedroom and asks if she’s alright. “No E.J., I’m not. It’s the baby,” she cries. E.J. approaches her and questions why she’s looking at Johnny like that. “What does he have to do with this?” he asks. “Everything,” she utters. E.J. doesn’t understand and implores her to talk to him. She wonders if it’s Johnny’s bedtime. He leaves to tuck Johnny in and Nicole sobs as E.J. sings to his son in the next room.

Back at the Kiriakis Mansion

Chelsea later arrives at the party and hugs Brady, expressing how glad she is that he’s home. He remarks how sweet she was to keep in touch with him. They smile how they missed each other. After Brady excuses himself to answer the door, Victor asks his granddaughter how she’s doing. Chelsea says she’s tried to convince herself that she’s not responsible for Trent’s death, believing she initially drove Nick to do it since she broke up with him. She now blames it all on Melanie and refers to her as a horrible and destructive person. Kate, Daniel, Lucas, and Chloe soon arrive. Kate thanks Victor for the party.
