Kate observes the twins in the nursery and is approached by Lucas. She remarks how tiny and perfect they are and begs Lucas not to shut her out of their lives. He reiterates that he still wants her out of his life. “These are my grandchildren. Are they going to be banished from my life as well?” she asks. Kate is clearly moved by how perfect the babies are. “One may not be mine,” previews Lucas. Kate advises her son not to let EJ get to him. She claims that DNA doesn’t make a parent and attests that the twins will have a grandmother who loves them. Lucas then reveals that the police found the guy who hit John, and it was Andre’s cell mate. Kate deduces that Sami’s theory was right and the DiMeras killed John. Lucas confirms this and says the culprit isn’t talking. They disagree on whether or not Stefano was the one who ordered the hit on John. Kate theorizes that if Stefano wanted John dead, he would’ve killed him years ago. “Stefano needed to send Sami a message: dump me and marry EJ,” deduces Lucas, who scowls that Kate should be happy that Sami’s pushing for a divorce. Kate insists she’s not. Lucas rehashes how he spent his entire life trying to please her and the only thing he asked in return was to let him make his own decisions, but she pulled every trick in the book to keep him away from Sami. A teary-eyed Kate doesn’t deny that she’s made mistakes. He declares that he’s already filled out the forms and is changing his name to Lucas Horton. “I’m sorry Mom, but I am through being your son,” he affirms.

Lucas states that she forced him to choose between being her son and being a husband and father she could be proud of. She claims it doesn’t have to be that way, but he disagrees because of all the tricks she’s pulled in the past. She professes to love him and cries that she’ll stop talking to Stefano and will prove to him that she had nothing to do with forcing Sami to marry EJ. “I can’t lose you, I can’t,” she cries. Lucas says she has already and walks away.

Kate later looks at the twins alone. Lucas re-emerges as the nurse brings the twins out and announces that it’s dinnertime. She asks Lucas if he’d like to take the twins to Sami’s room. He of course agrees to and marvels how beautiful they are. Kate assures him that he’s a wonderful father and expresses how proud of him she is. “Mom wait,” he implores.

EJ visits Sami, who insists that Lucas is the father of the twins. EJ claims that the twins don’t look anything alike. “They’re fraternal twins! They don’t have to look alike. Didn’t they teach you that at your fancy boarding school?” exclaims Sami. EJ states that the boy is the spitting image of him. “My son doesn’t look anything like you except in your sick imagination,” scoffs Sami. EJ begs to differ. She implores him to stay away from the twins and reiterates that their marriage is in name only. She also reveals that she found out that the man who murdered John was Andre’s cell mate. EJ feigns surprise and mentions that the culprit’s eyes didn’t pop out in recognition upon meeting the driver in John’s accident. Sami scowls how he doesn’t have to keep hiding his giddiness, since he has her under his thumb where he wants her. EJ laughs at this comment and refers to her as her own person, which is one of the reasons he fell in love with her. They banter back and forth about their upcoming marriage together. She warns him to be prepared for the marriage from he!!. EJ clarifies that the marriage is about ending the vendetta. She suggests that he forget his fantasy of them ever falling madly in love and living happily ever after. He insists they both need to make the sacrifice to ending the vendetta. “I am the one making the sacrifice. YOU are getting what you want,” she retorts. He warns her not to mess with the marriage, stressing that John Black is dead because she changed her mind about marrying him and cautions her about making that mistake again.

Sami sarcastically welcomes back the real EJ, since he’s implying threats against her family. He claims he’s only reminding her what happened when she chose to ignore the vendetta. He warns her that if she doesn’t go through with the terms of ending the vendetta, she’ll spend the rest of her life looking over her shoulder. She reiterates that she’s going to marry him because it’s the only way for fulfilling the terms to ending the vendetta. He insists they need to marry as soon as possible. She reminds him that she just gave birth to twins and has to obtain a divorce from Lucas. He suggests she fly to Santo Domingo, since she can be divorced in 24 hours. Sami is bewildered that EJ would expect her to ask Lucas to fly with her after having just given birth to his children. She suggests staying in Salem for the divorce proceedings. EJ claims it will take months. “Months that your family’s going to remain at risk,” he adds. Sami suggests they set a date for their wedding, since this should satisfy Stefano. EJ states that it won’t, since Stefano will think they’re stalling. Lucas then brings the baby boy in. Sami warns EJ not to take one more step towards her child. Lucas brings the boy to Sami and wonders why EJ’s still there. EJ is surprised to see Kate enter the room holding the girl. Kate marvels to Sami how precious the babies are and hands the girl to Sami. Lucas says he thought it would be okay to allow Kate to spend time with the twins. Sami admits she’s glad and asks Kate which one she thinks looks the most like Lucas when he was a baby. Kate believes the boy does, which Sami agrees with. Lucas briefly kisses Sami in front of EJ, who remarks that the girl is as beautiful as her mother. EJ tells Sami to do what she has to do before he finally exits, which prompts Lucas to inquire what that comment was about. Sami suggests they talk about their beautiful family instead. Lucas thanks her for the beautiful babies and assures her that he loves her. Kate thanks them for letting her spend time with her grandchildren. Sami invites Kate to stay if she wants to.

Outside Sami’s room, EJ peers through the window and then gets an idea.
