Petty Feelings

By Gwen Morett, About.com

University Hospital

Chelsea approaches Daniel wanting to talk to him about Kate. “Is she gonna die?” she asks point blank. Daniel begins to say that he can’t discuss Kate’s case, but Chelsea interrupts and complains how sick she is of his stupid little rules. “Why do you get to know more about her than I do?” she questions. He states that one can’t predict how Kate’s illness will go until she gets treatment. Chelsea apologizes, admitting that she said some really awful things to Kate. She wishes she could take back what she said. Daniel believes Kate will forgive her. “Without my mom around, Kate’s really all I have,” laments Chelsea, as she expresses how Kate’s always made her feel good about herself. She feels as though it’s her turn to take care of Kate. Daniel’s impressed with her decision. Chelsea says she’ll try with Kate, even though she still feels betrayed. Besides, Kate’s health is more important than her “petty feelings.” She knows that Daniel never meant to hurt her, recalling how he saved her life and that of Bo’s. She claims that she developed a little crush on him, but that’s all. Daniel promises to do everything in his power to help Kate.

Chelsea flashes back to being in the hospital after the pancreatic operation with Kate by her side. “I have to help her the way she helped me,” insists Chelsea.

Kiriakis Mansion

Kate hands Philip and Lucas coffee on the terrace, ready to have a serious talk about the future with her sons. She talks about how hard she’s been working to build her business, and she wants to be sure she’s leaving things in capable hands. The brothers question if she got the latest biopsy results. “It’s cancer. Lung cancer,” she reveals. Philip puts his arm around his mother and assures her she will fight it. Lucas professes how they love her and assures her they will be with her every step of the way. Kate expresses how grateful she is to have them both by her side. She asks Philip to release Lucas from his contract because she’ll need him to manage things at her company for a while. Philip agrees to do this. Kate asks Lucas if he’s up to taking over the Hearth & Home. Lucas says he is, but insists that she’ll be back before she knows it. He assumes the diagnosis came from Daniel, which Kate confirms. Lucas questions if she should get a second opinion, but Kate says no way. He then suggests that with Victor’s connections, he could get someone better than Daniel. Kate insists that nobody can do anything else. Philip argues that his dad’s the one who brought Daniel to Salem, so that only means that Daniel’s the best. Kate knows that neither one of them approves of her involvement with Daniel, but begs them to put it aside. Philip states that all they want is for her to be cured, but Lucas isn’t crazy about Daniel being on the case.

Lucas continues to insist that they need another opinion from someone else. Kate argues that she doesn’t want to look into it further, revealing that she already went online and did her research on the team of doctors at the hospital. She expresses how lucky she is to have two wonderful sons looking out for her. She reveals that she starts her first round of chemotherapy later today and might be out of commission for a while. Lucas questions if Billie and Austin know, which Kate confirms. Daniel then arrives to take her to the hospital. Lucas asks to have a quick word with Daniel. Philip expresses how proud he is of his mom for being so strong. Kate gets teary-eyed and puts on a brave front. Philip assures his mom that he’s there for her. They embrace and profess to love one another.

Meanwhile, Lucas insists to Daniel that Kate doesn’t know what she wants and isn’t thinking clearly. Daniel begs to differ and refers to Kate as an intelligent woman who is capable of making an important decision about her life. Lucas tells Daniel that on the outside, his mom acts tough and brave, but on the inside, she’s very fragile. Daniel surmises that it’s a good thing Kate has both of her boys by her side. Kate assures Philip that there’s no other doctor she would rather have than Daniel. She expresses how thankful she is to her sons and assures them that she’ll have someone call them later. Lucas and Philip, however, intend to come with her.

Ready for Chemotherapy

Kate is later at the hospital ready to begin her first round with Daniel, Philip, and Lucas by her side. The attending doctor reminds Kate of the possible side effects. After Daniel and the doctor walk out, Lucas suggests a game of Boggle, remembering how they used to play it together. Kate insists that she’s fine and they don’t have to hang out. She offers to have Daniel call once everything’s over. Philip kisses his mom goodbye and leaves. Lucas, however, would rather stick around, but Kate needs him to go check on an ad campaign. Lucas kisses her and professes to love her, then jokes how he still wants a rain check on the Boggle. After her sons leave, a tear streams down her face.

Chelsea enters Kate’s room and presents a St. Sofia medal to her, which Victor gave to her when she was ill. She hopes it will work for Kate the way it worked for her, then walks out.

Brady Pub

Bo and Hope arrive looking for Melanie. Max tells Hope she’s upstairs. Hope proceeds to go get her. Max needs to tell Bo something about his sister before they do anything.

Meanwhile, Melanie is sleeping upstairs in her room when she receives another note slipped under her door. She wakes up and sees the note, startled to read that it’s the same one she received before. She opens the door, then sees two other duplicate notes in her room. It turns out it was just a dream. Hope knocks at the door and implores her to get dressed and come downstairs so she and Bo can talk to her. After Hope leaves, Melanie gets a crank call in which the distorted voice says, “I saw you at the cemetery. I know what happened.” She reads her wadded up note and worries about Bo and Hope knowing.
