One Wave at a Time

By , About.com Guide

Philip is outside of the pub talking on the phone when receives news about Kate. He makes a beeline to the hospital.

Daniel sits with Kate at the trauma center as she prepares to undergo a biopsy to see if she has lung cancer. He states that the lungs aren’t easy organs to access, which makes any diagnosis difficult. He assures her that one of the top pulmonologists in the country will go in with a thin needle and take tissue samples and fluids from the affected area. Kate puts on a brave front and doesn’t want to call anyone until she has some answers. He states that he’s going to assist in the OR, but she doesn’t want him as her doctor. Daniel insists that they can’t make this personal and implores her to take everything messy about them and push it aside. Kate reminds him that there are other doctors in town. Daniel affirms that he’s going to help with her diagnosis even though she doesn’t want him anywhere near her. Kate rehashes how he had issues with a woman who had cancer, speculating how anxious he seems to be the one to deliver the bad news. Daniel suggests that she might turn out to be perfectly fine.

Nicole arrives at the DiMera mansion for her date with E.J., who remarks how stunning she looks. He marvels how much fun he had at the zoo with Johnny. He tells her to make herself comfortable while he runs upstairs to take a shower. Nicole wanders into the living room and beams at the romantic setting, feeling her abdomen and believing they’ll be one little happy family. “Nicole Walker. I assume you’re here to see Junior,” announces John. “Right you are John,” smiles Nicole, who reveals that she and E.J. are on their first official date. She sees a small present and remarks how thoughtful E.J. is. John offers her an alcoholic beverage, but she says she’s not drinking tonight. John is surprised to hear that Nicole’s laying off the booze and implores her to tell him what’s really going on. Nicole claims it’s no big deal, she just doesn’t feel like drinking. John isn’t buying it. “So, how about them Cubs, do you think they stand a chance?” quips Nicole as she attempts to change the subject. John doesn’t know or doesn’t care and continues to stare at her. “Where’s Ralph? I haven’t seen him around here lately,” questions Nicole. John believes that “traitor Rolf” is held up with Stefano somewhere. Nicole remarks how strange Rolf is. “Well I guess, but who am I to judge?” responds John.

Nicole admits that for some strange reason, she feels like she can trust John. “The truth is, I’m pregnant,” she reveals. An intrigued John is eager to hear more. Nicole recalls how she was once told she couldn’t have children, as she used her abdomen to stop a bullet once. John congratulates her and doesn’t remember seeing her this happy without a drink. She speculates that this is just what E.J. needs to get off his horrible fixation with Sami. She declares that she wants E.J. for herself, stating that this baby has to be his priority. Otherwise, she’ll have to raise her baby by herself.

Nicole realizes that John likes Sami, but is hoping he doesn’t pick sides on this. John agrees not to get involved. E.J. emerges and apologizes for taking a while. John smiles and tells them to have fun. Nicole remarks how sexy E.J. looks. He admits he had a wonderful time with Johnny today, but is a bit starved for adult attention. He announces what the chef is preparing lobster bisque, among other dishes, and proposes they take a stroll down on the riverfront afterwards. He pours a smiling Nicole a drink and wonders what they should drink to.

Dr. Whitaker has news for Sami and asks if they should discuss it in private. Sami allows Lucas to hear. “You’re pregnant,” reveals the doctor. Sami is in shock and flashes back to being in bed with E.J. just as Lucas arrived home from prison. She believes it can’t be possible. “Oh, it’s possible alright. I know exactly when it happened,” rehashes Lucas. Dr. Whitaker reveals that she’s already in her second trimester, which stuns Sami, since she hasn’t even had symptoms. He asks her the all important question: “When was your last period?” A flabbergasted Sami doesn’t remember and guesses a couple of months ago, admitting how she’s been under a tremendous amount of stress lately. He recommends that she make an appointment with her obstetrician as soon as possible and start taking her prenatal vitamins.

After the doctor leaves, Sami wonders what she’s going to do. Lucas suggests she should call E.J. and tell him he’s going to be a daddy again. Sami claims she can’t do that. Lucas questions if there was somebody else, affirming that it sure wasn’t him. Sami rants how it was only that one time, and E.J.’s the only one she’s been with. Lucas doesn’t need to hear about the “one time.” She complains how it’s not fair, since she was planning on getting a job and getting the twins out of the mansion. Lucas tries to assure her she can still do those things. “Who’s gonna hire me when I’m pregnant? What am I gonna do?” worries Sami. She fears that Stefano will never leave her alone if he finds out she’s carrying another DiMera heir. Lucas urges her to concentrate on her present situation right now and call E.J. to tell him. Sami says she needs to process all of this before she tells E.J. Lucas continues to push her into telling E.J., insisting that he has a right to know. Sami asks him why he’s sticking up for E.J. Lucas denies sticking up for the guy and rehashes how she kept her pregnancy with Will a secret. He calls E.J. and tells him that Sami’s in the hospital. E.J. agrees to come over and apologizes to Nicole for having to put their date on hold.

Sami can’t believe Lucas just did that. Lucas announces that he’s leaving, insisting that Sami’s going to be the one to tell E.J. E.J. later shows up concerned and asks what’s wrong with her. A hesitant Sami reveals that she fainted, but refers to it as no big deal. E.J. asks if they’ve done any tests or if they know why it happened.

Nicole sits alone at the DiMera mansion, disappointed that E.J. left her for Sami again. “Damn you, Sami Brady!” she fumes, which John overhears.
