I Don't Love the Man That You Are Now

By Gwen Morett, About.com

Roman arrives and expresses how glad he is that Marlena’s okay. Marlena shares how John thinks she’s having some symptoms of the toxins which Stefano gave her. She states that she’s finally seeing things for what they are, not for the way she wants them to be. She tells John that he doesn’t seem to be the person whom she wants to spend her life with. John claims Marlena’s just confused and doesn’t know what she’s talking about. “But I do. You just don’t want to accept it,” she counters.

Roman looks at John and notes that Doc’s not the only one who’s had a change of heart. John wonders how she’s moving on from the great love of her life. Marlena rehashes how she’s been there and done that, recalling how Roman was there before John. John appears stung by this, hearing how Marlena loved Roman very much at one time. The point is, she was able to move on and fall in love again with John. “So why is it you can’t do that with me now?” questions John. “Well the difference is that I don’t love the man that you are now,” answers Marlena. John implores her to sleep on it back at the mansion with him and recuperate there. Marlena refuses and just wants to go home. John insists that he can protect her. “At Stefano’s mansion? Where he has access to every way, in and out?” refutes Roman. John says he’s developed a new security system. Marlena yells how they’re both upsetting her. Roman apologizes and John requests to have a word with Roman outside.

John surmises that Roman’s enjoying this, assuming that Roman would like another shot with Blondie. He tells Roman to back off. Roman insists that all he wants is what’s best for Marlena, which isn’t John right now. “I can take care of her,” affirms John. Roman reminds his rival that he’s in trouble with the law, which doesn’t inspire a hell of a lot of confidence. John maintains his innocence and warns Roman to stay away from his wife.

The men re-enter and Roman apologizes for upsetting Marlena. John apologizes for the way he’s treated her. “And if you’ve felt angry or hurt, I don’t blame you because you make me feel the same way,” he admits. A stunned Marlena wonders how she did that. “By admonishing me with your constant comparisons and expectations. By making me feel like I had been competing with a ghost,” he replies. He explains how he thought it was best to distance himself in order to form his own identity, but laments pushing her away. He urges her not to give up on him, suggesting that maybe they can still find a way to bring back the old John. Marlena gets teary-eyed and desponds that there’s no way to bring the old John back, since the disk is gone. Roman tries to assure her that the ISA is working on repairing it. Marlena reveals that Stefano has it now. John refuses to give up and is determined to find a way to get the old John out. Marlena argues that it’s not that simple, but John believes otherwise. “I wanna be there for you now, just like you tried to be there for me then,” he asserts. He asks her to come back to the mansion with him at least until Stefano is apprehended. Marlena says she needs time to think about it. John implores Roman to step out with him, but Marlena needs Roman to stay.

Marlena asks Roman if she’s doing the right thing. Roman thinks she’s smart to hold off on John, agreeing that he’s not the guy they used to know. Marlena cries that she’ll go home alone. Roman insists on going home with her and staying as her police guard. They briefly reminisce over how they met. She jokingly asks him if he’s going to sleep on her floor just like he did before. “You bet I will,” he smiles, vowing to do whatever it takes to ensure that she’s safe. Nurse Maxine enters and requests to draw more blood from Marlena.

Roman says good-bye to a drowsy Marlena. John isn’t far behind, still waiting for his answer. Marlena still refuses to go back to the mansion with him and apologizes. “You have no idea how much I wanted to be with you,” she expresses before drifting off to sleep. “I’m sorry too,” he whispers before kissing her on the head. Roman promises to make sure she’s safe, just like the old days. John congratulates Roman on having a possible shot with Marlena after all. He watches her sleep from outside the room, then receives a phone call revealing that Paul has escaped.

Back at the hospital, Daniel finds Kate and is surprised to still see her there, since he thought she was taking Philip home. Kate says he called for a car and went to the Brady Pub. She’s glad she ran into Daniel again, since she believes that Chelsea suspects something. Daniel refers to Kate as paranoid and her that he and Chelsea weren’t even together when they had their affair. He insists that Chelsea will never know. Kate doesn’t think Chelsea would ever forgive them if she did.

Chelsea is later at Daniel’s apartment and turns on some romantic music and sits on the bed, eagerly awaiting his arrival home. She puts on a sexy nightie and a mesmerized Daniel soon arrives home. She coyly comes up to him, implying that she has a more satisfying idea in mind instead of dinner. “Chelsea,” he whispers. She tells him not to talk and kisses him. “Are you sure?” he asks. She implores him not to spoil the moment and kisses him again. She sits down on the bed and sips some wine while he takes a shower. She hears his phone ring and reads a text message.

Chelsea gets dressed as Daniel re-enters and asks if something happened. She confronts him over the text message from Kate, which reads, “Daniel, thank you for tonight. Although I think it’s best we never speak of what happened between us again.” She tosses his phone towards him. Daniel says he can explain, but Chelsea calls him a son of a bitch and storms out.

Chelsea later returns to the hospital to meet Kate. “I know about you and Daniel,” confronts Chelsea. Kate plays innocent and claims she doesn’t know what Chelsea’s talking about. Chelsea urges her to quit lying and tell the truth. Daniel quickly arrives and expresses how sorry he is, but insists that it’s over between him and Kate. “She saw the text you sent me. She knows that you and I slept together,” Daniel confesses.
