Character History:
Max escaped his abusive father Trent Becker as a young child. He was rescued by kindhearted teenager Frankie Donner. They came to Salem posing as brothers and were taken in by Steve Johnson and Kayla Brady. The two brothers gained a loving family when they were eventually adopted by Shawn and Caroline Brady. Shortly afterwards, Frankie left town and Max was sent away to camp.
Years later in 2005, Jennifer Devereaux was startled to see Max all grown up at the racetrack in Salem. He was intrigued by Abby Devereaux’s friend Chelsea Brady (then known as Chelsea Benson) and began dating her. Soon afterwards, Frankie tracked him down and returned to Salem. Max and Chelsea got hot and heavy, but never fully consummated their relationship. When Max discovered that Chelsea was responsible for accidentally running down Zack Brady and killing him, he vowed to stand by Chelsea and conceal the awful truth. He grew to care deeply for Chelsea, but she wasn’t interested in dating only one guy. Realizing that Chelsea wasn’t mature enough for him, he finally broke things off with her.
Max then became involved with fellow race car driver Stephanie Johnson and dated her. After she was injured in an accident at the Salem Grand Prix due to the machinations of the mysterious gloved hand, he broke things off with her after he realized he wasn’t quite as interested in her as he believed.
The young Brady then decided to focus on his work at the garage. He became close friends with Mimi Lockhart, who came to him needing some car repairs. She was in the process of divorcing Shawn Brady. He was intrigued by Mimi and hired her as a bookkeeper, which made Abby Devereaux jealous since she had a crush on Max. Little did Max know, his life was about to get a lot more adventurous with Mimi by his side. When Philip Kiriakis went missing overseas, Mimi enlisted Max’s help to search for him. Their adventure turned out to be a wild goose chase in Atlanta. Victor Kiriakis arranged to have the two locked in a church basement in order to scare them away from searching for Philip. They discovered a skeleton dressed in a Civil War uniform, which ultimately turned out to be Mimi’s deceased father David Lockhart. The two were rescued by Mimi’s rival Abby, who was hurt when she witnessed a kiss between the two.
2007
When Shawn and Belle lost custody of Claire to Philip, Max and Mimi helped the two snatch Claire and run away. Philip confronted Mimi and locked her in a trunk at Max’s apartment. After Max rescued her, the two made love for the first time.
Max was oblivious to Abby’s crush on him as he became closer friends with her. He began to see Abby in a new light when she stepped up to the plate and impressed him with her mechanical skills. He admitted to Abby that although he cared for Mimi, her dramatic life was too overwhelming for him at times. Shortly afterwards, Mimi discovered the horrid truth that she was the one who killed her father David Lockhart. A devastated Mimi left town and bid farewell to Max.
Max briefly dated Abby and confessed that he liked her for a long time, but was hesitant to ask her out due to their six-year age difference. Abby’s Aunt Maggie and her father Jack expressed their disapproval of Max, since he was previously known as a player. Their budding relationship didn’t last, since she abruptly left town for London in order to be with her parents.
Summer 2007
Needing a new adventure, Max invested in Touch the Sky Airlines and became Jeremy Horton’s financial backer. Max was initially led to believe that Jeremy was involved in a side business smuggling designer clothes, but did some investigating and discovered that Jeremy was involved in shipping illegal alien women into the country from Europe. These women were sold into prostitution. Max was horrified that his money was going towards this grotesque venture thanks to Jeremy’s corrupt boss Ty Rawlings. During a flight to Las Vegas, Max defended Stephanie from a rude passenger. The two ended up making out in the hot tub later on and fought their attraction. When Rawlings got word that Max was onto him, he had two thugs beat up Max in Vegas.
