When it comes to overcoming obstacles, few couples on daytime have endured what Days of Our Lives' EJ and Sami have. Actors James Scott and Alison Sweeney attribute it to their characters' mutual love for plotting, scheming and sparring. The duo discuss all things EJami and what they enjoy most about working with each other.
Ali, you're a brunette.
Alison Sweeney: It's been going on for a few months now. I just needed a change. I did [ask the show], and I did get permission.
James Scott: I went into makeup the other day to run lines with her, and she was standing there having a conversation with someone. I saw the back of her head and just walked right by her.
James, are you planning any changes to your hair?
James Scott: I'm growing my hair.
Alison Sweeney: He changes his hair all the time. He shaves it. He grows it out. He cuts it... It's a big topic on my Twitter page. Ejami fans are like, “Can't you tell him we want it a certain way.”
You're in the middle of some pretty heavy story: the fallout from Brady and Kristen's wedding debacle.
Alison Sweeney: Everyone was watching those scenes in the makeup room. They brought the house down. We were so proud of them.
What are your thoughts on EJ keeping the fact that Kristen raped Eric from Sami?
James Scott: It's not that big.
Alison Sweeney: What? It is!
James Scott: I found out two seconds before the wedding. What was I supposed to do? Tell you?
Alison Sweeney: Yes. A crime had been committed.
James Scott: I didn't know they were going to play the video at the wedding. I just thought, I'll keep quiet and nobody will be the wiser.
Alison Sweeney: Look at how that worked for you.
Obviously there will be fallout from this.
James Scott: Nah.
Alison Sweeney: No, no no. It falls out. My favorite line, that I believe airs this week is, “You wouldn't have told you.”
James Scott: That is so true. I apologize.
Alison Sweeney: He is racked with guilt, and he was between a rock and a hard place.
Since they paired EJ with Sami, EJ seems to have lost some of his manliness. I always joke that part of his anatomy is being kept in a box in a drawer.
Alison Sweeney: I don't know if that was right when he started dating Sami, though. I don't know that that necessarily came out of his relationship with her.
James Scott: I feel like when EJ was really being villainous -- when he came on the show and for the first three years -- that was the best. I don't know why [that's changed]. What's frustrating to me is he was so smart, and now he's not. I don't know that he's got his balls in a Mason jar under the sink, but he's certainly been emasculated to a certain extent. And of all people, what makes this relationship work is that he didn't have to change for her.
