Innocent Until Proven Guilty

By Gwen Morett, About.com

Lucas is in an orange jumpsuit and shackles when Roman informs him that he’s on his way to maximum security, but it’s not too late to change his mind. Lucas reminds him that they made a deal. Roman proceeds to make a phone call before he escorts Lucas to transfer. Chloe arrives to to tell Lucas how sorry she is, as she feels as though it’s her fault that he’s being sent back to prison. Lucas reminds her that they both needed someone to talk to, and he has no regrets and will always remember it. “I will too,” agrees Chloe. She inches closer towards him, but a cop tells her not to touch the prisoner. Lucas apologizes that she’ll have to deal with Sami, but Chloe assures him that she can handle Sami. “What about Philip?” he asks. Chloe states that they were never officially a couple and she’ll be okay. Roman re-emerges and says it's time to go. A despondent Chloe watches as Lucas is escorted out.

Caroline and Nurse Linda are at Steve and Kayla’s apartment anxiously awaiting for them to bring Baby Joe home. Caroline asks about the apnea monitor. Linda explains that it monitors the baby’s heartbeat and breathing. She appears worried, but Linda assures her that it’s common for a preemie to use one during the first few months they are home. Caroline then excitedly answers the doorbell to Maggie, who has brought goodies, including Alice’s donuts.

Steve and Kayla have just arrived outside their door with Baby Joe and notice the balloons. They are about to enter when Caroline and Maggie open the door and welcome them home.

Linda later goes over instructions regarding the apnea monitor. Steve jokingly asks if she can move in with them until Joe doesn’t need it anymore. Linda assures him that the apnea monitor is just a precautionary measure. Maggie gushes over how Joe’s fast asleep. Linda offers to demonstrate how to properly put on the apnea belt. Steve requests a moment with Kayla first. He asks Kayla if she’s okay, but she claims she’s just tired. He tries to assure an apprehensive Kayla that everything’s going to be alright.

Maggie later tells Steve and Kayla about the treats and goodies in the refrigerator. Kayla thanks Caroline and Maggie for making the homecoming so special. She suggests that Steve take a nap, since he offered to take first shift for Joe tonight. Caroline expresses how happy she is that Joe is finally home. She approaches Kayla while Maggie goes over casserole temperatures with Steve. Kayla admits she’s a nervous wreck and recalls what a roller coaster ride it’s been. Caroline tries to assure her that there’s nothing to worry about, but it’s easier said than done for Kayla.

Sami frantically comes home to the DiMera mansion calling for Marlena and worries over Lucas being sent to a maximum security prison. Marlena offers to talk to Roman for Sami. Sami also whines how the guy who is subletting her apartment is moving out. She admits that she’d love to move back in, but can’t. John emerges and reveals that she will lose custody of Johnny if she moves back into her apartment. Sami informs Marlena that E.J. obtained a court order from judge a forbidding her from taking Johnny out of the house. An incredulous Marlena wonders what judge would do such a thing. “He’s a DiMera, remember?” Sami reminds her. Marlena asks John if he knows anything about it. John says no and states that there’s nothing he can do, since there’s no evidence that E.J. has done what Sami has accused him of doing. Sami is convinced that E.J. bribed, threatened, or did whatever means necessary. She rants how E.J. has this demented idea that the three of them are going to be a family together. John suggests that she’s being unreasonable, but Sami begs to differ, since E.J.’s the one using their child to blackmail her into staying there. “Or you could say that he’s exercising his right to stay involved in his son’s life,” refutes John. Sami refuses to argue with John and tells her mom that she needs to figure out how she can find someone to sublet her apartment on such short notice. John brings up Ava, who needs a place to live. Sami refuses to let Ava live in her apartment for many reasons. John asks Blondie to give him and Sami a moment alone.

Alone with Sami, John insists that Sami show Ava the apartment. Sami can’t believe he’s asking such a thing, reminding John that she’s on trial for murdering Grandpa Shawn. “Innocent until proven guilty, right?” quotes John, who implores Sami to make it a one-year lease. Sami’s not interested and doesn’t want to hurt Marlena’s feelings. John tells her not to get any false hopes for him and Marlena. He offers to just let Ava live there at the mansion. Sami gives in and agrees to show Ava her apartment.

Ava is on the phone at the pub arranging to go over and look at an apartment. When she reveals her name to the recipient, he or she hangs up on her. Pete offers her more coffee and asks her if she’s having any luck finding a place to live. She complains that she’ll just have to live in a hotel. Pete brings up her estate just outside Brookville. Ava says she doesn’t need to be anywhere near there since it’s part of an ongoing investigation into her father’s business. Pete questions why she doesn’t just buy something. “Because my murder trial is coming up, and I’d like to believe if I bought something, I’d actually be around to live in it,” she replies.

Sami and Ava arrive outside Sami’s apartment. Ava remarks what a great building it is and thanks Sami for agreeing to show her the apartment. Sami suggests that she thank John. She opens the door for Ava and nervously looks over at Steve and Kayla’s apartment.

After Maggie and Caroline leave, Kayla looks at how peaceful Joe is and encourages Steve to take a nap. He is having too much fun watching his baby boy sleep, though. She reminds him how long it took before Stephanie slept through the night. He touches her shoulders and tries to assure her that Joe’s going to be fine.
