American Style Barbeque

By Gwen Morett, About.com

At the DiMera mansion, Rolf serves a drink to Ava, who remarks that it may not be the most exciting 4th of July she’s ever spent but at least she doesn’t have to wait in line for food. E.J. says he would prefer a nice, old-fashioned American style barbeque with hot dogs, hamburgers, and some apple pie. He asks Rolf to fire up the grill and throw some weenies on. “I don’t do weenies,” groans Rolf. E.J. asks him to find some bratwurst. They notice the lights flicker before E.J. excuses himself for a phone call. After E.J. leaves the room, Nicole moans how she should get it through her thick head that it’s hopeless with E.J. Ava implores her not to give up, but Nicole believes E.J. has a chance with Sami now.

Out in the foyer, E.J. encourages Mrs. Sykes to go and spend the holiday with her family, assuring her that the court order will be filed as soon as the holiday is over. He then phones Sami and leaves a message, admitting how happy she made him. Lucas lurks nearby and quickly disappears out of sight.

At the pub, Chloe talks to her mom on the phone and asks her to tell her dad and Joy that she loves them. She then receives a call from Lucas, who needs a friend right now. Chloe admits she could use one too, but doesn’t think it’s a good idea to come over since John has a problem with her. He offers to come to her. She warns him not to risk getting caught again, since he has too much at stake. “Not anymore,” he responds. He detaches his ankle bracelet and heads for the Salem Inn.

Ava assures Nicole that she’s not a quitter. Nicole insists that she doesn’t need the heartache, sharing how E.J. got Sami to admit she has feelings for him. She predicts that it’s only a matter of time before they’re together, since E.J. will never give up. Ava believes it’s a matter of time before Nicole will make E.J. forget all about Sami. “You’re hot! You’re amazing!” she exclaims. Nicole thanks Ava for her support. Ava leaves to go find John.

Back in the living room, E.J. wonders where everyone is since it’s supposed to be a bloody party. Nicole mentions that Ava is looking for John, and Lucas didn’t want to join the party. E.J. apologizes if he upset her earlier, but thought it was important for him to be honest with her. Nicole blows it off as no big deal, but E.J. says it is since they nearly slept together. She wishes him luck with Sami, but he doesn’t know if he’ll need luck. Nicole believes it’s highly unlikely that Sami will leave Lucas. E.J. asks her if she wants to make a wager on that. Nicole takes him up on it. “She would never dump her Lucas and take up with the likes of you,” speculates Nicole. “That’s an annoyingly astute observation,” notes E.J., who begs to differ with Nicole’s theory.

John comes downstairs and notices the lights flickering. He opens the door to Marlena, who came to see if he came to his senses. John reminds her that they’ve been through this. Marlena apologizes for letting her anger get the better of her before. “It happens, apology accepted,” he says. Marlena can’t understand how he can hesitate to get his life and memories back. “Well sometimes the Devil that you know is better than the one that you don’t,” he remarks. Marlena doesn’t find this funny and stresses how his entire life could be on that disk. John tells her that the man that she knew loved is dead and gone, and the sooner she accepts that, the better. Ava lurks around the corner and overhears. “How can you say that man is dead and gone? You have no way of knowing!” asserts Marlena. John refuses to plug anything into his brain until she reveals where she got it. She can’t do that. “I want my husband back!” she exclaims. She coaxes him to hand over the disk, but he refuses and leaves the room to attend to his guests.

“Forgive me for my absence,” announces John as he enters the living room. Nicole mentions that she’s enjoying the refreshments and a “certain sideshow.” John asks if either of them have seen his date. Nicole thinks Ava went looking for him.

Ava heads down to the lab and manages to unlock the drawer and take the disk. She notices the lights flickering. Back upstairs, Rolf alerts John that someone has entered the lab and security has been breached. John soon comes down to the lab and asks Ava what she’s doing there.

Sami comes downstairs at the mansion and spies Nicole through the doors. She calls E.J. from the foyer and declares that no matter what she may or may not feel, they can never be together. “I love Lucas. I will always love Lucas. He is the man I intend to spend the rest of my life with,” she professes. She affirms that she will never love E.J. the way he wants her to and implores him to stop chasing after someone who doesn’t want to be with him. A disheartened E.J. hangs up the phone as Nicole gloats how she won the bet between them. Nicole sees how upset he is and tells him to forget about the stupid bet. E.J. declares that he’s through groveling and through chasing. She asks where he’s going. He has absolutely no idea, but invites her to come along. She eagerly accepts and suggests they go to her place. Nicole grabs the champagne.

The party is in full swing at Bo and Hope’s house, as Julie gushes to Doug how cute the twins looked in their outfits. “Almost as cute as Betsy Ross and Uncle Sam,” jests Doug. Victor arrives, which brings a smile to Caroline’s face. He knew she’d be there and knows she’s still grieving for Shawn and figured she could use a friend. Bo and Hope come outside with food and greet Victor and Caroline. Bo asks them if they’ve seen his daughter. “Which one?” asks Caroline. “Chelsea,” answers Bo. Caroline notes that he looks worried.

Chelsea and Daniel arrive and prepare to face Bo. Daniel requests a kiss for luck first. Chelsea obliges.

Back outside, Mickey and Maggie help themselves to food as Maggie remarks how she can’t believe Sami’s gone already. Mickey relays how Sami wanted to get home to Lucas so he could spend more time with the babies. They discuss how being in the DiMera house is difficult. “Three’s a crowd,” she recalls, as they recall Bonnie being involved in their lives.
