Labor Pains

By Gwen Morett, About.com

Sami returns to the DiMera mansion, where EJ hands her a baby monitor before heading to the gym to blow off some steam. When Marlena enters, Sami anxiously asks her mom to watch the twins, then thanks her and rushes up the stairs.

Marlena enters the living room just as John gets off the phone with a security system company. John is determined to find out who broke into his home. Daniel arrives and wonders if it’s a bad time. John refers to Daniel as the “Big Kahuna” who saved Bo’s life. Daniel wants some advice, but glances at John and hints that it’s a little personal. Marlena asks John to excuse them, but he refuses since the two of them were in the middle of something. Marlena assures him that they will talk after she speaks to Daniel. She invites Daniel to sit and encourages him to open up about his personal issue. Daniel explains what a mess he was after his wife died of cancer. John listens from the other room as Daniel admits he’s gun shy about getting involved again, especially with a patient. He asks Marlena how one falls out of love and moves on. “If you genuinely love somebody, it’s very hard to resist those feelings, no matter how hard you try,” she states. Marlena advises him to picture his wife being there right now. Daniel closes his eyes and predicts that his wife would encourage him to let himself love someone again. Marlena surmises that Daniel doesn’t know whether or not he wants to act on his feelings yet. Daniel admits that he knows exactly what he’s doing in the OR, but when it comes to his personal life he’d rather surf. Marlena believes he knows what he wants, but theorizes that he’s not sure if he wants to take that emotional risk again. “Tell me something I don’t know,” he mutters. Marlena speculates that he wants her to tell him that it’s okay to go ahead. Daniel is impressed and notes how good she is.

As John continues to listen from the other room, Marlena cautions Daniel to take the next relationship slowly. Daniel thanks her and proceeds to go. After Daniel leaves, John is eager to get back to their conversation. Marlena confronts him about eavesdropping. As they head back into the living room, John affirms that it’s his house and he’ll do as he pleases. Marlena reminds him that she’s a doctor, so next time she’d appreciate some privacy. John asks if she’s going to make a habit of seeing patients there. Marlena asserts that she will only if she needs to. John changes the topic back to tracking down the burglar who stole the disk. Marlena says she has Roman looking into it, but John doesn’t want a police officer involved. Marlena insists that Roman’s doing it as a friend to both of them. “I don’t want you involved in this,” admits John. “That’s too bad, because I love you very much,” she professes.

Philip and Chloe are dining together at the Kiriakis mansion when a disgusted Nicole enters. Philip tells her not to start. Nicole remarks how she’s lost her appetite, then questions where Victor is. Philip says he had tickets to the opera, which Nicole finds peculiar since Victor never liked the opera. Nicole predictably gives a smart remark about the “lame” performances Chloe was in. “Victor almost built a state of the art opera house in honor of his late daughter Isabella. And I was to be the artist in residence,” announces Chloe. This is news to Philip. Nicole doubts that Isabella would appreciate Chloe performing there. “Especially when you’re two-timing with her little brother,” adds Nicole. Nicole makes another snarky comment about Brady marrying Chloe, who deduces that Nicole is still angry about Brady choosing Chloe over her. She assumes that Brady’s the one who asked for the divorce and quips what a shame it is, since the two of them were so much in love. Nicole expresses her surprise at Philip jumping Chloe’s body last night. “Since when did you become the morality police?” questions Philip, who rehashes how Nicole messed around behind Victor’s back with anyone who would have her. Nicole admits she did and paid for it, as Victor made her life a living hell. She berates Philip for hooking up with a woman who almost destroyed Brady’s life. Chloe refers to her as absurd. “Trust me. Victor doesn’t forgive and forget,” warns Nicole. Nicole claims she really does care about Philip, despite what he thinks. They are interrupted when Nicole’s phone rings, which contains a humorous ringtone of Pookie barking. She answers it to EJ, who invites her down to the gym to run a few laps with her. She accepts and heads out.

Philip implores Chloe not to let Nicole get to her. Chloe believes that Nicole’s right, in that they can’t even think about messing around. Philip wonders what’s the problem, since they’re not fooling around. Chloe doesn’t believe she should get involved with anyone since she’s still technically a married woman. Philip intends no disrespect to his nephew, but states that Brady’s the one asking for a divorce. Chloe laments not being able to help him, since she predicts that things might’ve turned out differently otherwise. Philip says it happens to the strongest relationships and takes her hand, asking her if she’s willing to let go of Brady. Chloe admits that letting go of Brady isn’t that easy. “Even if you have someone like me to distract you?” asks a conceited Philip. Chloe says she can’t. Philip promises no strings and encourages her to forget about Brady and let go. Chloe doesn’t believe it would be right, but Philip doesn’t see it that way. He leans in for a kiss. They make out before Chloe breaks away and says she can’t do this. A hot and bothered Philip claims he knows why she came back to Salem. She gets up and believes her staying there was a big mistake. Philip asks what about dinner. “I lost my appetite,” she responds before she leaves the room. A smug Philip looks over John’s disk.

EJ is at the Salem Health Club working out when he approaches an attractive brunette woman and helps her with bicep curls. Sami is about to walk in, but backs away upon seeing them and falls down, knocking things off the shelf. EJ finds the scene amusing.
