No News is Good News

By Gwen Morett, About.com

At the hospital, Chelsea is on the phone with her dad while Steph worries about her baby brother to Max. Steph asks Chelsea if she knows where Daniel is, noting how great he was at helping out when Bo and Chelsea were sick. Chelsea doesn’t know where Daniel is at the moment, but doubts that pediatrics is his specialty. Steph believes it couldn’t hurt to ask and cries how she doesn’t want to just stand around and do nothing. Max puts his arm around Steph and comforts her. Chelsea offers to call the rest of the family and hugs Steph before leaving. “What if my little brother doesn’t make it?” desponds Steph. Max insists that with all the Bradys, Hortons, and Johnsons praying for the boy, there’s no way he’s not going to make it.

Meanwhile, a distraught Kayla insists that she needs to see her baby. Lexie informs Steve and Kayla that their newborn baby has been taken to ICU and he’s on a ventilator. Dr. Elman tries to assure Kayla that her baby is receiving the best possible care and right now she needs to stay put and rest. Steve offers to go see their baby boy and will come straight back and tell her about him. Lexie can’t allow it and states that the lung specialist is running tests trying to get the baby breathing on his own. Until the tests are complete, the baby will have to remain in a sterile environment inside the incubator. Kayla asks what his Apgar scores were. Lexie would rather not tell her, since she knows Kayla would read too much into it. Dr. Elman encourages her to rest. A stubborn Kayla doesn’t care what any of them say, she’s determined to go down there regardless. Dr. Elman threatens to sedate her if she doesn’t follow orders. Lexie reminds her that she won’t be any good to her baby if she starts hemorrhaging or going into shock. Dr. Elman requests to examine Kayla and encourages Steve to take a break, but Steve insists on staying right there. Kayla says it’s okay. Steve kisses her and assures her that he’ll be right outside, professing to love her. He goes outside the room into Stephanie’s arms and sobs.

Steve later takes his scrubs off and tells Steph how upset Kayla is, since the doctors won’t allow them to see the baby until they are done with the tests. Steph asks how her dad is doing. Steve claims he’s hanging in there, reminding her what the old saying is. “No news is good news,” recites Steph. Dr. Elman emerges from the room and asks to have a word with Steve. She informs him that she gave Kayla something to help her relax. She needs Steve and the family to focus on Kayla and let the staff focus on the baby.

Nick arrives at the hospital looking for Max. “What the hell did you do to my papers, Max?” confronts Nick. Max states that it’s not a good time, but Nick insists that he needs some answers. He swears that all he did was dry out his proposal papers and rewrite them. Nick confronts him about putting them in an envelope and mailing them. Max claims he just sent the stuff in. Nick reveals that he went to the office and looked at the work turned in, but some of it didn’t look familiar. Max tries to cover by suggesting that maybe someone at the school fooled around with it. Nick confirmed at the school that nobody touched it. Max offers to go get Nick’s original work at his house, then reminds Nick that he’s not smart enough to change his work and make it look legit.

Max later returns to the hospital and hands Nick his stack of grant papers. Nick apologizes for getting crazy on him. Max tells him not to sweat it and claims he never should’ve turned them in without his permission. Nick suspects that Max knows more than he’s letting on, warning Max that he’ll find out if he’s being played.

In the locker room at the hospital, Dr. Carrington encounters Daniel and thought he was on his way to the sunshine coast. Daniel says he’s already there in his mind. Dr. Carrington brings up how Daniel works with Marlena and how John’s a very interesting case. A towel-clad Daniel mentions how Lexie keeps tossing him high-risk cases so it’s like one thrilling challenge leads to another. Dr. Carrington encourages him to consider sticking around permanently, since he’s become somewhat of a legend around there. Daniel briefly flashes back to kissing Chelsea in the steam room, then implies that he has a little unfinished business. “What’s her name?” grins Dr. Carrington. Daniel claims it’s just something he can’t walk away from. After Dr. Carrington leaves the locker room, Daniel groans in frustration before heading to the showers. Chelsea then enters the locker room looking for Daniel.

Daniel exits the shower when an embarrassed Chelsea happens to be standing right there. She quickly turns away and apologizes. Daniel wraps himself in a towel and tells her not to worry about it, even though the locker room is for hospital staff and is coed. He compliments her cute hair cut, calling it hot. She looks away and asks him to check on Kayla Johnson’s baby. He mentions that it’s not his area of expertise and there’s nothing he can do that the neonatal team’s not already doing. She admits that she wanted to talk to him about something else. Daniel assumes it’s about the two of them and declares that it’s not going to happen. A smiling Chelsea surmises that he’s in denial. Daniel affirms that it’s time she gave it up and moved on. Chelsea wonders why he’s having trouble leaving Salem, noting that he sure seems pretty damn grounded. She deduces that he doesn’t want to leave Salem because of her. He claims they got a little too close, which he takes responsibility for since he’s older. She theorizes that the “older” line is just another excuse, as she mentions that she’s been through a lot in her young life. She accuses him of playing games with her and tells him to get over himself, suggesting that they can be together once he does. As she turns to leave, Daniel suddenly pulls her into a passionate kiss.
