Recruiting Young Soldiers

By Gwen Morett, About.com

At the hospital, Marlena phones Mickey asking him to expedite her divorce papers. She soon encounters Kayla, who asks if she’s really going to divorce John even though his life is at risk. Marlena vows to do all she can to get him the medical attention he needs, she just can’t be married to him right now. Kayla brings up how Steve was a completely different person when he came back, but finally a miracle happened and the old Steve came back to her. She encourages Marlena not to give up, but Marlena affirms that she has to move on with her own life. Marlena assures Kay that she’s going to help John, but claims she doesn’t have to be married to him in order to do that. Kayla believes Marlena will have more influence as his wife, fearing something terrible could happen if they don’t find out what’s behind the unusual brain scan. She then advises Marlena to march right over to the mansion and hand the divorce papers to John. Marlena questions why the change of heart. Kayla speculates that if Marlena serves the divorce papers to John, then he’ll have to work extra hard to change her mind. Marlena still intends to go through with the divorce, but hopes to persuade John to get medical attention.

Philip is at the pub leaving a phone message for Morgan, hoping she can forgive him.

Stephanie approaches a working Max and asks him how the morning rush was and where his mom is. Max replies that the rush wasn’t too bad and that Caroline’s upstairs getting some rest. Steph expresses how worried about Caroline she is, fearing she could spend the rest of her life in jail if convicted of killing Trent. Melanie emerges and seems surprised that Caroline was released. Philip joins them and reveals that Melanie asked him to help find the real killer. He insists that he had no idea who Melanie was and couldn’t help feeling sorry for her, since she was upset about Trent’s death and felt that justice wasn’t being done with Caroline behind bars. Steph rehashes how Melanie generally doesn’t have a problem with innocent people sitting behind bars. Philip offers to let them know if he hears anything.

After Philip walks off, Melanie smiles how hot Philip is. Max takes Melanie outside to talk while Philip approaches Chelsea, who hits him on the head with a menu and calls him an idiot. Chelsea confirms that she stayed up half the night talking to Morgan, who is confused and hurt. Philip insists that he never meant to hurt her and didn’t realize he had feelings for Chloe. He asks Chelsea to tell Morgan how sorry he is. Chelsea says she’ll think about it, but is still upset with him. Philip changes the topic to Kate. Chelsea shares how she argued with Kate at the hospital. Philip asks Chelsea to go a little easy on Kate, claiming that it’s complicated.

A breathless E.J. sits down outside the pub and calls Mary the housekeeper, asking if Samantha’s up yet. He finds out that Sami didn’t come home last night and wonders where she could be.

Max drags Melanie outside the pub and affirms that he doesn’t want her asking the Kiriakis family for help. Melanie refuses to believe that Philip’s dangerous and gushes how he has a killer smile. Max warns her against getting involved with Philip, stating how he strings girls along and finds someone new when he gets bored. Melanie admits she does that to guys as well. “He had an affair with his best friend’s wife!” rehashes Max. The siblings argue how they accused each other of killing their father. Melanie whines how she can’t even leave town. Max admits he’s glad about that since he didn’t want her to leave anyway, affirming that he cares about her.

Back inside, Chelsea wants answers from Philip. He quietly reveals that Kate is sick, but can’t tell her anymore without betraying Kate’s trust. Chelsea laments what a bitch she was to Kate and insists that she needs to go see her. Philip tells her she can’t, since Kate doesn’t want anyone to know without a definite diagnosis. He reveals that Kate hasn’t even told Billie or Austin yet. “Is she gonna die?” asks an upset Chelsea. Philip tries to assure his niece that Kate will beat her illness. They sit down, where a teary-eyed Chelsea laments saying all those selfish things to her. Philip encourages her to stay positive and promises to update her if he finds out anything.

Back outside, Max apologizes for being mad at Melanie lately, but hopes they can work on their relationship. She agrees to keep in mind what he said about Philip. “Good. Besides, aren’t you uh, in love with Nick?” questions Max. “He’s cool,” shrugs Melanie. Philip emerges and requests to talk to Melanie. A reluctant Max heads back inside.

Philip asks Melanie what Max’s attitude was all about. Melanie jokes how Max was just auditioning for the role of big brother. Philip assumes that Max already told her what a bad influence he is. He asks her how the investigation’s coming along and wonders if there’s any leads on Trent’s killer. Melanie can only conclude that everyone hated her father. Philip reveals that he did some checking around, but it’s pretty bad stuff which he feels her dad would want to protect her from. Melanie admits that she’s glad he’s dead. She expresses how guilty she feels for being so angry at her dad that she wished him dead. Philip tries to assure her that her father didn’t die because of her wishes. She drops her purse and Phil picks it up for her. He then hands Trent’s wallet to her which she nearly left behind.

Chelsea tells Steph that Kate's really sick. She cries how worried she is about Kate, but admits she can’t get past her anger towards her for betraying her trust with the man whom she loved. Meanwhile, Kayla comes downstairs from seeing Caroline and asks Max if he smoothed things over with Melanie. Max believes he and his sister are cool again and thanks Kayla for the good advice.

Chelsea later leaves a message for Daniel, asking him to call her back. Kayla is glad to hear that Max isn’t giving up on Melanie.
