A Very Complicated Situation

By , About.com Guide

At the DiMera mansion, a breathless Marlena pulls away from kissing John. He kisses her passionately again. She breaks away and John suggests that they go upstairs, but Marlena says they can’t. “Okay, but someone could walk in on us down here,” he implies. Marlena insists that they shouldn’t be doing this at all. He says it feels right to him, then kisses her again. A flustered Marlena picks the divorce papers off of the floor and implores him to sign them, but John tells her she’s making a big mistake. “The mistake that’s being made around here is the fact that you won’t go to the hospital and find out what’s wrong with you,” she retorts. “It’s because I’m fine,” he claims. Marlena begs to differ. She tries to storm out, but John stops her and asks her what he has to do in order to convince her to stay in the marriage. “Go to the hospital, get all those tests run, find out what’s causing all these problems for you,” she replies. “Absolutely not,” refuses John.

Marlena asks John to sign the divorce papers and return them to Mickey. She expresses how she wants him to be the man she married, but she can’t keep settling for less than what she deserves. “Are you saying that I’m not good enough?” he assumes. Marlena points out that they just keep on hurting each other. John recalls when she was in the hospital he realized what life was going to be like without her, so that’s when he decided to fight for their marriage. “You don’t even remember what you’re fighting for,” desponds Marlena. John insists that he can’t lose her. Marlena cries how she wants her husband back and asks if he thinks he can be that person. “No,” he replies.

Marlena surmises that they’ve tried their best, but it just wasn’t meant to be. She asks him to sign the papers. John still refuses, affirming that they still care about each other. She admits that she can’t trust his feelings and has no idea what’s in his head or heart. She begs him to see a doctor before it’s too late, then leaves. A distressed John looks over the divorce papers, then smashes a glass, vowing not to lose Blondie.

Lucas comes to Chez Rouge and asks E.J. if he talked to Sami, then quickly figures out that Sami didn’t tell him about the pregnancy yet. E.J. notes how strangely Sami’s been acting and deduces that Lucas knows why Sami wanted to meet him there. Nicole walks in at that moment and sees E.J. across the room, telling her baby that E.J. deserves to know he’s the father.

Meanwhile, E.J. implores Lucas to tell him what Sami’s important news is. Lucas denies knowing anything and beats around the bush, but E.J. believes that Lucas knows more than he’s saying. Nicole interrupts and asks Lucas to get lost so she can talk to E.J. Lucas says he needs to pick up Allie from daycare anyway. E.J. lets him know that they haven’t finished speaking.

Nicole asks E.J. why he didn’t call her back after she left him a message. “I told you I was busy,” responds E.J. Nicole mocks how he has a full life worrying about Sami. E.J. reminds her for the hundredth time that Sami is the mother of his son. She requests to talk in private, but E.J. claims he’s really busy and is meeting someone there. She complains how he had time to talk to Lucas and sarcastically wonders if Lucas is his new BFF. E.J. questions why she’s suddenly being so hostile. Nicole brings up how he walked out on their date without saying goodbye, recalling how he basically said ‘Gotta go, Sami needs me. Hope you don’t mind eating alone.’ E.J. denies saying that and tries to blow her off. He offers to reschedule another date and asks her what she’s doing on Friday. Nicole quips how she’s booked up with Leonardo and the Jonas Brothers, then refuses to leave until she tells him something important.

E.J. sits Nicole at a table nearby, where she apologizes for giving him hell earlier. E.J. insists that his leaving last night had nothing to do with her, as he was really looking forward to spending the evening with her. “But you spent it with Sami instead,” she rehashes. E.J. reveals that Sami fainted and had to be taken to the hospital. Nicole questions why it happened, but E.J. doesn’t know and is hoping Sami will tell him once she arrives. A disheartened Nicole realizes that Sami’s the one he’s meeting there. E.J. apologizes, recalling how Sami told him she needed to speak to him about something important. He admits he’s terrified that it has something to do with Johnny. “Oh, don’t use your son as a cover,” implores Nicole. E.J. insists that Johnny is what binds him and Sami together. “It’s the only reason that I care about her,” he claims. Nicole states that Sami can’t be a part of their lives if it’s going to work between them. She tries to leave, but E.J. professes that his son is the most important thing in the world to him. Thus, she can’t ask him to cut Johnny’s mother out of his life.

E.J. asks her to just sit down and apologizes for hurting her feelings last night. Nicole expresses how he went beyond hurting her feelings, referring to the situation last night as humiliating and horrible. E.J. reiterates that Sami was in the hospital. “With a case of the vapors,” adds Nicole. A frustrated E.J. rants how he doesn’t even know what that means. Nicole accuses him of making any excuse to spend time with Sami, but E.J. insists that the only reason he went after Sami was because he thought something was terribly wrong. E.J. apologizes for giving her mixed signals. “What you have been giving me are lies and insults, pretending that I mean something to you,” clarifies a bitter Nicole. She urges him to make a decision. “What’s it gonna be? Who do you wanna build a life with? Sami, or me?” she quivers. E.J. refers to the situation with her and Sami as “very complicated.” Nicole realizes he can’t cut out Sami completely, but she needs to know who has his heart. E.J. asks her to please let it be, admitting that he knows he sounds like a selfish bastard. She whines how she would rather never see him again than feel the way she does.
