Shawn or Philip?

By Gwen Morett, About.com

In Tulsa, Philip arranges a cozy dinner for Belle in their hotel room. She says she left a message for Shawn and is surprised when Philip presents her favorite dish before her. He proposes they watch The Notebook, but an uncomfortable Belle suggests a comedy instead. She notes that the room only has one bed.

Outside the room, Shawn carries Claire and coos how excited her mommy will be to see her. Claire is about to knock on the door, but Shawn proposes they buy flowers for Belle first.

Back inside, Philip offers the bed to Belle and insists on sleeping on the couch. He mentions that there’s only one room left in the hotel since there’s a taxidermist convention in town. A guilty Belle then wonders how she would feel if Shawn was spending the night with his ex in a bridal suite with dinner and wine. “If I wanted to sweep you off your feet we’d be in Paris, not Tulsa,” clarifies Philip. He reminds her of the reason they are in Tulsa in the first place. “I wonder how many ex-husbands become such good friends,” smiles Belle. He offers the whole room to herself if things get too awkward and jokes about heading down to the bar and seeing if he can stuff an ostrich. This elicits laughter from both of them.

Belle later notes to a preoccupied Philip how delicious the food is. She tries to assure him that whoever has Tyler is taking good care of him, but Philip has doubts. She insists they will find him with one solid lead. As Belle proceeds to make up the couch, he checks out the movie menu. Belle then brings an armful of covers out to him and ends up stumbling, falling on top of Philip on the couch in the process. They both laugh and he notes that she’s as light as a feather. Their close moment is interrupted by a knock on the door. Philip opens it to Shawn and Claire. Belle is taken aback by their arrival. Shawn presents her with flowers as a guilty Belle coos over Claire. Shawn notices the seemingly cozy dinner setting and mentions that Claire didn’t sleep too well on the plane. He explains that they would’ve been there sooner, but Claire wanted to pick out a flower for her mommy. Belle takes Claire aside while Shawn and Philip converse. Phil gives an explanation for the covers on the couch and fills Shawn in on the Lauren situation. Shawn wonders why Philip would have to economize and stay in the same room with Belle. Philip claims the hotel was full and insists there’s nothing going on. “Yeah. I can see that everything is just perfectly innocent,” quips a jealous Shawn as he picks up a glass of wine.

Shawn takes Claire from Belle and asks Phil to take Claire downstairs to see the aquarium. Philip complies and leaves with Claire. “Sorry to spoil the party,” remarks a sarcastic Shawn. Belle insists there’s no party and asks why he brought Claire all the way to Tulsa. Shawn claims both he and Claire missed her. Belle implores him to be honest. “The only reason that you’re here is because you don’t trust me to be alone with Philip,” she assumes. Shawn claims he does trust her, but didn’t expect to find her in the same room with Philip. They argue briefly about the awkward situation. Shawn apologizes and says he can’t understand why a guy like Philip would need Belle’s help when he can afford an army of detectives. “Because I’m his friend!” exclaims Belle. “You’re Claire’s mother and my fiancé,” counters Shawn. Belle recounts how they found Lauren in a shelter and how Philip lost control and got clubbed by a security guard. Shawn suggests the police handle things from now on. Belle insists they can’t since Philip gave up his parental rights when he arranged for Lauren to terminate the pregnancy. She insists she owes Philip because she walked out on him and took Claire. “And because losing his family broke him and he went back to war and got hurt,” professes Belle. She claims that Philip has no one and needs a sense of family and theorizes that maybe if he finds his son, he’ll stop focusing on Claire. She implores Shawn to stop thinking the worst and trust her, assuring him she loves him. Shawn reiterates his love to her and tries to persuade her to leave with him and Claire. Unfortunately, she already told Philip she’d stay. He then reveals that he signed up for the police academy and the garage is going under. Belle isn’t too thrilled upon hearing this news. She blasts him for making the decision before discussing it with her first. “The 50's are over. Women hung up their little white gloves and aprons a long time ago,” she states. She whines about being the last to know regarding his life-changing decision. He reminds her how he supports her nursing school venture. She states that’s different because it’s not dangerous. “I don’t want to be terrified every time you leave for work,” she dreads. “So my decision to help our family is wrong, but you taking off with Philip is no problem?” he retorts. He implores her to choose who she wants to be with: him or Philip. Shawn proceeds to leave for the airport with Claire, but she persuades him to leave Claire with her. “I love you Belle. Don’t ever forget that,” he professes before he leaves.

In the cave, Stephanie does her “I saw a bear” dramatic routine again, but insists this time it’s for real. Max proceeds to go bear hunting. A frantic Stephanie calls out for Max, who sneaks up behind her and says, “Boo!” She briefly berates him for this and refers to him as juvenile. Max holds the culprit of the shadow which scared Steph, a bunny. He jokes about eating the bunny. Stephanie claims he doesn’t have the heart to kill a bunny. “Well maybe you don’t know my heart as well as you think,” implies Max. She remarks that he’s even more clueless about hers. They lie down as Max suggests they talk and try to figure out what makes each other tick. Stephanie coaxes Max to say what he’s feeling. “I don’t want to hurt you again,” he says. She asks if he’s afraid of getting hurt. He reminds her that she’s tied down to Jeremy. Therefore, he has no interest in playing second string. He then admits he’s scared to death of even having this conversation, which is why he avoided it before.
